Ben Askren is hoping Jorge Masvidal stays away from him until their UFC 239 fight on July 6 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

The two are slated to meet in a highly-anticipated welterweight clash and things are certainly heated between the two. So much so, that many believe things could even get physical if they were face to face, especially after Masvidal’s altercation with Leon Edwards earlier this year.

While Masvidal didn’t show up for UFC 239 media day recently, there’s always a chance something can happen during fight week if he shows up. That is why Askren hopes “Gamebred” doesn’t act like a “moron” and cost them a paycheck by clashing before UFC 239:

“I hope he stays away from me so that we can both get a paycheck on Saturday night,” Askren said (via MMA Junkie). “I hope he’s not such a dipsh*t that he would ruin that for both of us.

But I’m sure the UFC would handle proper precautions to make sure he’s not a moron and that we both can fight and get paid on Saturday night.”

Following Askren’s controversial UFC debut win over Robbie Lawler, there were talks of him running things back with the former champion. “Funky” revealed he was even called about a rematch and would think about it.

However, he was later offered Masvidal, which is what he wanted all along:

“That’s who I wanted anyways. I’m good,” Askren added. “One thing about Robbie is I like him. There’s a lot of guys I don’t like. There’s a lot of guys I would enjoy fighting way more than (Robbie), and Jorge is one of them.”

Are you excited for this fight?

Colby Covington is a confident fighter, and when he speaks, he usually gets attention. He got exactly that when talking about former welterweight champion Robbie Lawler and Ben Askren.

Covington stated in a recent interview with MMA Junkie that he thinks Lawler, not Askren, is the more worthy title contender. This is of course not including himself in the equation:

“I’m excited to get back into action. Uncle Dana came calling, he wanted me to defend my title against the most worthy contender in the division – Robbie Lawler, coming off a dominant win over Ben Askren, you know?

“I have to take the challenge. I couldn’t turn that down. It’s time to fight. I’m not going to fake injuries, make excuses and keep dragging this out, man. I came to make this division great again, and that’s what I’m gonna do on August 3rd.”

Askren has already picked up a win over Lawler in his promotional debut. Now, he’s slated to fight Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239. Covington, a former interim champion, will face Lawler in the headliner of UFC Newark. The show is set to take place on August 3, 2019, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey and air on ESPN.

UFC President Dana White had already agreed that Covington would get the next shot at welterweight champion Kamaru Usman. However, with Usman on the sidelines, the promotion booked Covington against Lawler.

Ben Askren Slams Paulie Malignaggi’s Loss To Artem Lobov: ‘People Who Box Must Just Not Be That Good At Boxing’

Everyone is talking about Artem Lobov’s Bare-Knuckle FC (BKFC) 6 victory over Paulie Malignaggi.

Even UFC welterweight Ben Askren has commented on the bout. Speaking on Periscope this week, Askren downplayed Lobov’s accomplishments as a mixed martial artist. He also acknowledged that Malignaggi is a former World Champion boxer, which would usually make the victory more impressive.

However, Askren believes that simply proves “people who box must just not be that good at boxing” (via BJPenn.com):

“I get that Paulie retired, but he was a world champion. Now Artem, I went back to his record to make sure he was as bad as I remember him being. The fact is he’s as bad as I remember him being. He stinks. And this wasn’t like he did MMA and had great standup but struggled on the ground, or always got taken down.

Or had great hands but couldn’t deal with the kicks. It wasn’t anything like that. It was like he was a very average mixed martial artist. Average, that might even be getting a little too much. So how can a guy like that, who’s not even great at standup in mixed martial arts, go to beat a guy who was a world champion in boxing?

And the answer to me seems that people who box must just not be that good at boxing.”

Askren will return to the Octagon at UFC 239 on pay-per-view (PPV). He’ll be taking on Jorge Masvidal in what is likely a No. 1-contender match. Current welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is targeting a late 2019 return to action.

Usman and Askren have some personal issues with each other, so expect “The Nigerian Nightmare” to be rooting for “Funky” come July 6.

There is a ton of bad blood between Ben Askren and Jorge Masvidal, which has resulted in an exchange of words that Askren calls “sick and disturbing.”

The former Bellator and ONE Championship titleholder elaborated on his belief about the mindset that Masvidal has gone into for their fight. He did so when he appeared on CBS Sports’ State of Combat podcast.

One of the more interesting statements that Masvidal made was, “I’m going to make sure his bloodline doesn’t reproduce or nothing after July 6. Extinction of the Aksren blood by the Masvidal blood.”

According to Askren, he thinks his opponent is consumed with anger that resulted in Masvidal not attending the UFC 239 press days. This is something that Askren believes he can use as an advantage come fight night:

“He knows in a battle of words, it’s going to get ugly for him. We talked about it earlier how he has this insane amount of dislike. He said something fucking ridiculous last week about how he wants to end my bloodline which I thought was hilarious because I already have three kids.

Unless you plan on murdering the rest of my family which is pretty sick and disturbing, you’re not gonna end my bloodline Jorge ‘cos I have three children.

The two welterweight stars are slated to meet at the upcoming UFC 239 pay-per-view (PPV) on Saturday, July 6, 2019, from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. This event is slated to be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between Jon Jones and Thiago Santos.
