If you thought Ben Askren was going to let Nate Diaz get away with his recent comments, you were wrong.

In an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani on Monday, Diaz claimed he was done fighting at 155 pounds. He also added that he was the king of the lightweight division:

“That’s in the past now,” Diaz said. “I think it’s time to start fighting at a more comfortable weight class. There’s nothing for me there. I already did everything to everybody, I feel like I’m the king of that division anyways.”

Askren caught wind of those comments and promptly responded by mocking Diaz’s record at lightweight:

Diaz faces Askren’s training partner, Anthony Pettis, in a welterweight contest at UFC 241, which takes place August 17 in Anaheim, California. With Askren also competing at 170 pounds, and having already taken jabs at the Stockton native repeatedly, we could see the two collide at some point.

However, “Funky” will first have to get past someone similar to Diaz in Jorge Masvidal. That welterweight contest takes place on the main card of UFC 239 on July 6 in Las Vegas.

UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman is itching to get back into training and defend his title for the first time.

Usman became the new 170-pound champion after he outclassed Tyron Woodley over five rounds at UFC 235 in March.

However, injuries have piled up as “The Nigerian Nightmare” is currently recovering from a damaged knee and fractured foot. He does, however, expect to return to action by the end of the year.

“It’s killing me, not training,” he said at a recent scrum (via BJ Penn). “I’m a guy who likes to train, I like to stay active. That’s the most important thing, to get back to where I’m healthy.. Then I can become the active and dominant champ that I want to be.”

Usman’s First Title Defense

Usman is expected to defend his title against longtime rival Colby Covington next. The only question for him, though, is whether Covington will actually accept the fight.

“I wanted Colby because I’ve wanted Colby for three years now,” he added. “They’ve offered me that fight at least 4-5 times, and I’ve accepted it each and every time. He’s the guy who has turned down the fight. I hope he’s man enough now to man up and take the fight.”

Even if Covington is not his first title defense, Usman is ready for just about anyone else in the top ranks of the division. That includes another rival in Ben Askren.

“Ben Askren was never an issue for me…I’m glad everyone is talking about him, that’s just another guy for me,” Usman explained. “After I get the next opponent, that’s another guy that’s waiting for me that I can go and defend against… but he’s got to fight Jorge Masvidal [first] and Masvidal’s no easy guy. Any one of those guys, I’m ready and I’m prepared for all of them.”

Which highly-ranked welterweight do you want to see Usman face?

Kamaru Usman: Ben Askren Is ‘Just Another Guy’

As the reigning UFC welterweight champion, “The Nigerian Nightmare” Kamaru Usman feels he needs some worthy adversaries to prove his greatness.

There is still plenty of time left for Usman to fight three times this year like he suggested he’d like to do. However, the recently-crowned champion seems to be in no rush.

“This time, I want to make sure I’m doing things the right way, because I’m not just a contender anymore,” Usman told reporters at UFC 237 (via MMA Junkie).

While the beef between Usman and Ben Askren has subsided in recent weeks, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to call out an old rival. So when Askren was made to look a fool by Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs in a charity wrestling event at Beat the Streets NYC, Usman couldn’t resist.

Loss to Burroughs

Usman reacted to the tweet in the interview. Askren was beaten by the best in wrestling. If he wanted to face the best in MMA, he’ll be waiting:

“Ben came in thinking, ‘I’m the best at everything – I’m the best at wrestling, I’m the best at this and that,’” Usman said. “So that (tweet) was just to let him know, ‘Hey, no you’re not. Relax.’ When you go into wrestling, there’s the best guy that’s there. And he went in there and he felt that.

“Now, if you want to come into the UFC, there’s a guy that’s the best there, too – and that’s me. So when that time comes, and I get my opportunity to show him that, I will gladly do it.”

Nothing Against Askren?

Not too long ago, Usman stepped up to Askren backstage before a press conference. While nothing kicked off at that time, it is a reminder of how not to act nowadays for the champ.

“As a champion, whoever I defend that belt against is going to make me a little extra money,” he said. “I need to have worthy adversaries that people are going to be interested in seeing me beat up. If he’s already starting to stir the pot and make that fight big, I love it. I have nothing against Ben Askren. When we step in that cage, I’m beating up anybody.”

Let us not forget Askren has a date with Jorge Masvidal at UFC 239 later this year, so we can’t put the title shot in “Funkytown” just yet. But Usman knows he has made a big splash and gotten people talking. Still, he called him ‘just another guy’ waiting for him:

“Ben Askren was never an issue for me,” Usman said. “He came in, and of course, he wanted to really sell himself. Now, he’s in the big show and he needs to make a splash, and he did that. So I’m glad that everybody’s talking about him. That’s just another guy … that’s waiting for me.”
