In tonight’s co-main event long-time UFC heavyweight Ben Rothwell will be hoping to make it two straight wins after picking up the victory over Stefan Struve late last year. He’ll face Ovince St Preux, who is making his heavyweight debut tonight. The former light-heavyweight contender comes into the fight 35lbs heavier than his last bout. Will he emerge victorious? Let’s find out!

Round 1: Both fighters come out quite tentatively. Ovince St. Preux is flicking out up kicks to try and keep Ben Rothwell at distance. Rothwell is backing up his opponent and is beginning to let his hands go. A couple of big rights have landed already during a few different skirmishes. St. Preux is showing Rothwell a lot of respect right now staying light on his feet and getting out of the way at all costs. OSP throws a high kicked and Rothwell catches it. The former light-heavyweight contender is down on the mat and Rothwell is trying to sink in a choke. Eventually he lets up and just starts letting shots go while leaning over OSP. St. Preux gets back to his feet towards the end of round one. Both men posture for a few seconds before the round finishes.

Round 2: OSP begins round two a little more aggressively. He’s throwing big kicks and punches with power. Rothwell lands a big right hand and a picture-perfect uppercut too. He’s hot OSP trapped up on the fence but is struggling to get anything off and the French fighter eventually escapes. St.Preux is back on his bike but it’s not long before he’s trapped against the fence against eating punches – Rothwell even lands a nice knee. Again they separate but not for long. OSP lands a nice shot but it doesn’t bother Rothwell who takes the fight back to the fence and mauls his opponent. When they separate St. Preux is covered in blood and looking visibly tired. Rothwell jumps in to try and land but eats a counter which drops him. OSP is on top as the round ends.

Round 3: OSP opens up with a big hook but he quickly finds himself back on the fence. Rothwell has the clinch and is trying to throw knees. St Preux punches his way out of it but again it’s not for long. Rothwell has hi up against the fence again and is throwing big shots which are landing clean – these are the best moments of the fight for ‘Big Ben’. He realizes the finish isn’t coming and both fighters seem happy to take a rest against the fence right now. OSP makes some pace and lands a big hook followed by a head kick. Rothwell still isn’t fazed. He presses his opponent back to the cage again. He’s hitting uppercuts, knees, and trying to stay heavy on the fence. The last 20 seconds sees the fighters back in the middle of the cage. They are swinging wild but OSP is getting the better of it. The bell sounds to end the fight but OSP lands one final punch which drops Rothwell. He gets straight back to his feet to await the judge’s verdict.

Jones

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones would have no problems at heavyweight according to Ben Rothwell.

Jones has been teasing a move up for many years but has yet to do so. However, a number of light heavyweights have been making the move up in recent times with Rothwell recently booked to face a few such as Gian Villante only for them to fall through amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The latest will be Ovince Saint Preux as he meets Rothwell on the May 13 card and “Big Ben” believes these fighters are moving up because they feel the heavier fighters aren’t as good.

“I already went through that with [Villante], so I already went through all those emotions about these guys are moving up to heavyweight,” Rothwell said on MMA Fighting’s The A-Side live chat. “They think the heavyweights suck. Jon Jones is beating everybody, they’re running from him. I kind of got over it.

“I see that guys like Daniel Cormier and even going further back, Randy Couture, I think they really opened the door for guys in that weight class, that weight area, to fight wherever, up and down.”

So what about Jones then?

Some observers believe Jones is putting off a move up because he’s wary of the power the heavyweights possess. After all, “Bones” himself stated in the past that if he had a trilogy with Daniel Cormier, he wouldn’t want it at heavyweight where the latter would have an advantage.

But for Rothwell, Jones is among the few fighters who would succeed against an opponent of any size due to his skills.

“I think wherever Jon Jones fights, he’s Jon Jones,” Rothwell added. “He’s gonna bring a lot of hype. The guy has skills that can win anywhere. I feel like guys like Tony Ferguson, Khabib [Nurmagomedov], these guys can win, they can beat guys bigger than them. I feel like this kind of exists everywhere. I think that’s something that Fedor [Emelianenko] always showed over the years. It doesn’t matter your size. If you’re a badass, you’re gonna win a fight.

“If somebody pushes your wife down in front of you, are you gonna go, ‘Oh, what’s your weight class? Gimme a couple of weeks to get ready.’ No, you fight. That’s what a real fighter does. They’ll win wherever against whoever it is.”

Do you agree with Rothwell about Jones?

Long-time light-heavyweight contender Ovince St Preux will reportedly move up to heavyweight and face Ben Rothwell on May 13.

St Preux AKA ‘OSP’ has fought at 205lbs for his entire 37-fight MMA career. He has beaten the like of Shogun Rua, Pat Cummins, Yushin Okami and Corey Anderson. Last time out he scored a submission win over Polish fighter Micha? Oleksiejczuk. The 37-year-old ‘OSP’ will now abandon the light-heavyweight division according to MMA Junkie who reports.

“Saint Preux, who has the second-most light heavyweight fights in UFC history with 20, will jump up a weight class to fight Ben Rothwell on the UFC’s May 13 event.

“MMA Junkie verified the matchup between Saint Preux (24-13 MMA, 12-8 UFC) and Rothwell (37-12 MMA, 7-6 UFC) with a person close to the situation following an initial report from ESPN. The person requested anonymity because the UFC has yet to make an official announcement.”

The fight will be part of the May 13 show set to take place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. The unnamed event will be just the second one back for the promotion who will hold UFC 249 on May 9. Another event on May 16 has also been announced – it will be headlined by Alistair Overeem vs. Walt Harris.

Yesterday it was announced light-heavyweight contenders Anthony Smith and Glover Teixeira would headline the May 13 card. Smith is looking to work his way back into title contention after falling short against Jon Jones last year. He beat fellow contender Alexander Gustafsson last time out and will be keen to add another big name to his resume. Teixeira will be hoping to extend his three-fight winning streak and make his claim as next in line for a shot at UFC gold.

Do you think Ovince St Preux will be able to compete at heavyweight?

Ben Rothwell beat Stefan Struve in controversial circumstances at UFC Washington DC. The heavyweight clash was marred by groin shots from Rothwell on Struve.

The first came in round one and had the “Skyscrapper” writhing around the floor in pain. He fought on and was winning the fight up until the third and final round. Another groin shot sent him down again, only for his corner and referee Dan Miragliotta to persuade him to continue with the fight. In hindsight this was a massive mistake as moments later Rothwell jumped in and got the finish.

Speaking to media post-fight Rothwell admitted the win wasn’t totally legit but ultimately, he’s just looking forward to a better 2020. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“Yeah, there’s an asterisk, but I can’t do anything about it,” Rothwell said. “I tried to be as apologetic as I could and complimented Stefan Struve for being a man. But, you’ve got to move on. I got myself in a really good position to have a big 2020 with all of my coaching staff and the conditioning I’m in. I just want to look better in my next fight. I want to be noticeably better the next time around.”

Struve could have picked up a disqualification win but pressure from the referee led to his continuation. Something Rothwell was thankful for but accepted it was unfortunate.

“So, I was pretty
confident he was going to fight. That is unfortunate the ref said that because
he’s basically just repeating what his cornermen were telling him.”

Prior to his fight with Struve, Rothwell had lost three straight UFC fights. The heavyweight knew a loss this weekend could have brought an end to his career. So whilst he was apologetic for the way the fight ended, Rothwell was just happy to be back in the win column.

“I think I was on the chopping block,” Rothwell said. “Let’s be honest, I’ve lost three decisions prior to this. I didn’t get helped, I don’t get finished and I fight to the end. But four losses is four losses and it can’t happen. So, this was crucial.”

Should UFC make a rematch between Ben Rothwell and Stefan Struve?
