Robelis Despaigne’s hype train completed derailed earlier tonight (Sat., May 11, 2024) at UFC St. Louis live on ESPN from inside Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and the combat community took immediate notice.

Despaigne, who is a towering striker at 6’7”, came into his main card fight against heavyweight Waldo Cortes-Acosta with a 5-0 record and four finishes that came in less than 20 seconds. The promotion has done their best to pump up the former Olympic bronze medalist, but he was ultimately exposed at UFC St. Louis.

Cortes-Acosta usually likes to strike, but he implemented a great gameplan by getting inside and forcing the taekwondo specialist to grapple. “Salsa Boy” eventually scored some takedowns and completely controlled Despaigne from top control. Despaigne had little defense to offer and found himself in similar positions every time he returned to his feet.

In the end, Cortes-Acosta pulled off the upset and utilized his wrestling and ground-and-pound for three entire rounds to subdue anything Despaigne wanted to do. It was a great performance from Cortes-Acosta, but the MMA community was more interested in the flop by Despaigne.

Hype train derailed! Robelis Despaigne suffers decisive loss against Waldo Cortes-Acosta - UFC St. Louis Highlights

Cuban MMA standout Robelis Despaigne suffered the first setback of his mixed martial arts career following a lackluster performance at UFC St. Louis.

‘The Big Boy’ entered his Saturday night clash with ‘Salsa Boy’ Waldo Cortes-Acosta with a perfect 5-0 record with all of those wins coming by way of knockout in the opening round. Unfortunately, Despaigne could not deliver another highlight-reel knockout — or much of anything else for that matter.

Looking for another quick finish, Despaigne instead found himself taken down and put on his back for much of the bout. Cortes-Acosta offered little in the way of offense, but his nearly 10 minutes of control time was more than enough to earn him the win on all three judges’ scorecards.

Robelis Despaigne

Official Result: Waldo Cortes-Acosta def. Robelis Despaigne via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26)

UFC Fight Night: Hooper v Borshchev

Chase Hooper turned in a “Dream” performance earlier today (Sat., May 11, 2024) at UFC St. Louis live on ESPN from inside Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri, as the young lightweight stopped Viacheslav Borshchev with a dominant second-round submission (D’arce hoke).

Despite Borshchev being the much better striker on paper, it was Hooper who connected with a massive overhand left early on that stunned Borshchev and knocked him to the canvas. Hooper quickly jumped on top and proceeded to suffocate Borshchev with punches, elbows, and countless submission attempts for the entire round.

The same thing was happening in the second round as Hooper secure a takedown and dominated from the top. He flowed with Borshchev and pretty much had his way in every exchange. Borshchev eventually couldn’t defend anymore and found himself in a tight D’arce choke. Hooper turned over and within a few seconds the referee stepped in for the stoppage. Borshchev protested the submission, but upon further review “Slava” did appear to tap once as Hooper had the choke sunk in.

Controversial? Possibly. A standout performance from Hooper? Absolutely.

Esteban Ribovics turned in one of the best knockout finishes of the year earlier today (Sat., May 11, 2024) at UFC St. Louis live on ESPN from inside Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri, stopping fellow lightweight Terrance McKinney with a ridiculous head kick just 37 seconds into the first round.

This “Prelims” matchup was one being checked off by fight fans everywhere. McKinney is an absolute fireplug and has only finished or been finished in every single one of his pro fights. Ribovics, despite this being just his third UFC appearance, has already shown the knack for producing Fight of the Night offense.

It only took half a minute for this fight to play out and it was awesome. McKinney came into this fight as a betting underdog, but he fired off a crisp jab early that caught the attention of “T.Wrecks.” Moments later, the two lightweights started throwing hard punches in the pocket. Ribovics, however, ended his sequence with a high right head kick that didn’t miss. It hit McKinney directly in the face and produced a crack heard around the arena.

McKinney, who had been knocked out three times entering tonight, instantly went limp and fell backwards into the cage. Ribovics didn’t follow up with any punches as the damage was already done. McKinney was out cold and left smiling despite being unconscious. It was pretty gnarly.
