After another crazy and controversial night of fights from last night’s (Sun., June 25, 2017) UFC Fight Night 112 from the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, fans have plenty to analyze. From shocking submissions to quick TKOs, UFC Fight Night: Chiesa vs Lee delivered in more ways than one.

The most glaring was the most undesired, when highly derided referee Mario Yamasaki called an extremely early stoppage to the Kevin Lee vs. Michael Chiesa main event after Chiesa did not tap, ripping a chance for Lee to decisively win the biggest fight os his UFC career and also not allowing Chiesa a chance to recover even if he was in big trouble.

And it became clear on Sunday night that several longtime veterans are on the way out, while several new prospects emerged in some extremely lacking weight divisions.

Let’s take a look at what we’re left with after the UFC’s foray to Oklahoma City.

Dominick Reyes

5. Dominick Reyes Is A Much-Needed New Face At 205:

For a division severely lacking in prospects and contenders, the light heavyweight class is beginning to finally shape up.

Volkan Oezdemir, Marcel Fortuna, and now Reyes have all scored incredible first round finishes in recent bouts, and their presence is sorely needed.

Reyes absolutely leveled Christiansen within the first 20 seconds, and finished the fight just seconds later. Reyes is heading a new crop of prospects at 205 pounds, which is long overdue to say the least.

UFC Fight Night 103 goes down in Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix this Sunday. Today’s weigh-ins feature the card’s main event headliners BJ Penn & Yair Rodriguez hitting the scales. After retiring in 2014 on the back of three straight losses, the former two-weight world champion looks to return with a win. Often hailed as the greatest lightweight of all time, Penn will again compete as a featherweight. Looking to spoil ‘The Prodigy’s’ big comeback is red-hot prospect Yair Rodriguez, undefeated in his UFC career, and his last loss was five years ago.

Since winning The Ultimate Fighter Latin America, Rodriguez has compiled four straight wins. Victory against Penn would be a huge stepping stone, but if he’s motivated, who knows what the former champ will bring. Lightweight veteran Joe Lauzon battles Marcin Held in the evening’s co-main event, and Court McGee meets Ben Saunders.

BJ Penn Fires Back At Dana White’s ‘Sad’ Claims

Earlier this week, UFC President Dana White made headlines after labeling former UFC lightweight and former UFC welterweight champion BJ Penn as an ‘underachieving’ fighter, saying that “The Prodigy” could’ve been the best of all-time had he perhaps focused more. Earlier this week, UFC President Dana White made headlines after labeling former UFC lightweight and former UFC welterweight champion BJ Penn as an ‘underachieving’ fighter, saying that “The Prodigy” could’ve been the best of all-time had he perhaps focused more. The 37-year-old former champion has since gotten wind of those comments, and it appears as if he had mixed feelings regarding the situation.

Speaking with KOHN2, Penn described White’s claims as ‘flattering’ but ‘sad’, adding that he hopes to one day show the UFC boss that he had reached his full potential:

“It’s flattering and it makes you sad at the same time. It’s strange for me to talk, because it’s like one side we’re talking about this Hall-of-Fame career guy, and on the other side, I’m just trying to prove myself. You got to talk about two different people, two different BJs at times. It’s his opinion and he’s entitled to that, and all I can do for my side is get in there and show them. Maybe Dana White will look back and be like, ‘You know what? Look at him now. That guy really did reach his full potential.”

Penn should get the opportunity to win over White, as he’s made it clear that he’d like to make a return to action. In fact, he was scheduled to compete last June at UFC 199, but he was pulled from the bout after violating USADA’s (United States Anti-Doping Agency) guidelines pertaining to IV rehydration. “The Prodigy” is currently looking to return in November at 145-pounds:

“The fight now should be around November,” Penn said. “That’s when we’re looking to come back, so we’re going to talk to the UFC and 100-percent, we want to get back out there, 145 (pounds), and we’re gonna do this. See where this takes us.”

Penn has lost his last three bouts to date and was most recently seen on the wrong side of a brutal beating from Frankie Edgar in 2014, but the Hawaiian has since moved to New Mexico to train under the tutelage of legendary head coach Greg Jackson. Does Penn have one more run left in him?

BJ Penn stands along side only one man in an elite class in mixed martial arts given that he’s only one of two fighters to have ever held a title in two different weight classes in the UFC. “The Prodigy” spent time as both the UFC lightweight champion and the UFC welterweight champion and produced a legendary career in the process.

UFC President Dana White, however, feels as if Penn could’ve been better than he was. In fact, White recently labeled “The Prodigy” as an underachieving fighter, and added that Penn would likely agree with him:

“That’s a loaded question,” White chuckled when asked by TMZ to name an underachieving fighter. “Listen, there’s guys and girls that probably don’t reach their potential, because they don’t… BJ Penn.

“BJ Penn probably should have been one of the best ever, to ever live, to ever do it. But, BJ was so talented, you know. I just… I don’t know. I think BJ, in his own words, would go back and do things differently if he could.”

If this is indeed how the Hawaiian feels about his iconic career, he may be able to patch up some holes as he announced earlier this year that he would be making his return to competitive fighting under the tutelage of highly-touted trainer Greg Jackson. That return, however, has been postponed after Penn was notified by USADA (United States Ant-Doping Agency) for the use of medically-administered IV during a non-fight period. His punishment is currently unclear, but the 37-year-old had intentions to resume his career prior.

It’s been a long time since we’ve seen either BJ Penn or Georges St-Pierre actively fighting. For ‘Rush’ it was the tail end of a six-year win streak that sent him to retirement in 2013, having won 12 straight fights since 2007, but squeaking past Johny Hendricks at UFC 167. Citing personal issues and the somewhat loose drug testing regime in mixed martial arts at the time, the former promotional poster boy relinquished his undisputed title, much to the dismay of his fans and UFC president Dana White.

‘Th Prodigy’ left the sport on a very different kind of streak, having been 5-1-1 in his last five years of competition, only competing three times between October 2011 and July 2014, and losing all those fights in rather ugly fashion. Fighting Nick Diaz and Rory MacDonald at welterweight was brave, albeit somewhat ill fated, and taking on Frankie Edgar at featherweight in his last fight was not a great decision.

BJ Penn

That was 2014, and Penn lost by harrowing TKO in the trilogy match with Edgar, sending him out of the sport with a rather unsatisfactory summary to such a storied fighting career. Criminal accusations and a failed USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) test for IV use have hindered returns at UFC 197 and 199 for the former welterweight and lightweight champ, but now he’s aiming for a November return against an old foe in Georges St-Pierre:

This was in response to ‘GSP’ recently telling The MMA Hour that he could ‘easily’ make lightweight if required.

georges st. pierre ufc stats

During his best years Penn lost to ‘Rush’ by both decision at UFC 58 and TKO at UFC 94. The former welterweight champion and consensus greatest 170-pounder of all time ‘GSP’ has already been linked to a middleweight return against Michael Bisping, so is ‘The Prodigy’ asking for a lightweight battle a little too far down the weight categories?

Penn, in terms of fighters going down as their age goes up, is quite a rare sight. Most prefer to go up as their physique naturally swells over time, and what are the chances that St-Pierre will actually fancy the trip down below his formerly owned weight class? That said, UFC 205 will be the first event held in New York, and at the Madison Square Gardens no less. For obvious reasons this will be a historic night, potentially filled with red panties should the stars align in the correct manner.

Would this be a fight worth watching? Possibly, but I get the feeling that regardless of weight, St-Pierre would continue Penn’s run of bad luck.
