Legendary former UFC lightweight and welterweight champion B.J “The Prodigy” Penn is scheduled to make his highly-anticipated return at June 4’s UFC 199 from Inglewood, California after a near two-year hiatus away from the sport.

Penn was originally scheduled to face off with German kickboxer Dennis Siver, but news broke last night (May 10, 2016) indicating that Siver had suffered an undisclosed injury and would be forced out of the bout.

Fast forward less than 24 hours later, however, and the UFC has found a new opponent to replace Siver and keep Penn on the card.

According to UFC Tonight’s Megan Olivi, Cole Miller will step up on short notice to clash with “The Prodigy” in just a few weeks.

Miller is riding a rough streak as of late, coming up winless in his last two bouts. He suffered a decision loss to red hot rising contender Max Holloway in February 2015, and fought to a no-contest after being eye-poked in a bout with Jim Alers last December.

He will look to add a huge name to his resume when he faces off with Penn.

The former two-division champion hasn’t competed since July 2014, and he too had hit a rocky time near the end of his running, losing three-straight bouts, and being winless since 2010.

Now training with highly-touted coach Greg Jackson, however, Penn will look to make a splash when he enters the cage on June 4 in the L.A Forum.

See who could be fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov on April 16…

News broke late last night that once again Khabib Nurmagomedov’s return had been hindered by injury, but this time it was not his own. Tony Ferguson, originally scheduled to face ‘The Eagle’ on April 16’s UFC on FOX 19 card, withdrew from the bout with just 11 days notice. Nurmagomedov has been out of action for two years now, his last performance a dominant win over current lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos, and now the 22-0 Sambo master is looking for a replacement for ‘El Cucuy.’

We saw that Donald Cerrone threw his name in the mix, but with his own fight against Patrick Cote also at risk, it’s possible the UFC might look elsewhere. Luckily for the matchmakers, there’s been a number of fighters making themselves available for Nurmagomedov, but not all of them for April 16.

UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos claims he has unfinished business with ‘The Eagle,’ but his old foe wasn’t too co-operative when the Brazilian came knocking:

That’s gonna sting.

So who else is in the mix for the top lightweight contender to face this month?

Legendary former UFC two division champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn announced last month that at age 37 he would be making a return to competitive mixed martial arts (MMA).

Recently guaranteeing that he would make his comeback at March 5’s UFC 196, it appears as if the plan has now changed.

Speaking with his own BJPenn.com, “The Prodigy” said that he and the UFC have agreed that returning at April 23’s UFC 197 would make more sense for all parties involved:

“I thought the fight guaranteed was going to happen because the UFC, they set up medicals for me to do,” Penn said. “I did the medicals and they were sending a film crew down and we were getting all that together and I assumed we were setting up the fight, and that might have been what was happening. But, at the end of the day, [UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby called me and said it would be more convenient for all of us to move the fight to April 23.”

While an opponent for Penn has still yet to be named, the tough and gritty Hawaiian has been preparing nonetheless, and he has been doing so under some of the best in the game at Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Training alongside top names such as former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, bantamweight title holder Holly Holm, Donald Cerrone, and Carlos Condit, Penn is undoubtedly giving himself the best chance possible to make another run in this sport.

With that being said, he plans to stay put up until the fight:

“You have heard ‘what you feed the most, grows the biggest,’ and I’m going to stay here and immerse myself in the martial arts and see how good I can get,” Penn said.

Despite having gone winless in his last four bouts to date, “The Prodigy” feels as if he can still hang with the best.

Although our most recent memories of BJ Penn inside of the Octagon may be difficult to digest, the former UFC lightweight and former UFC welterweight champion remains as a pioneer of the sport, and simply one of the most influential mixed martial artists of all-time.

That being said, heads were turned when the 37 year old Penn confirmed earlier this week that he would be making a return to competitive fighting.

“The Prodigy” had previously went into retirement after suffering a brutal beat down at the hands of Frankie Edgar back in 2014, a fight that marked his third consecutive loss.

Now apparently re-motivated and rejuvenated, “The Prodigy” is ready to make a comeback training under the tutelage of world class coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winklejohn.

Despite some not being in favor of Penn’s decision, it should be interesting to see what he makes of the opportunity.

As one of only two men to hold titles in two different weight classes, “The Prodigy” has sure had an illustrious career. Ahead of his upcoming return, let’s take a closer look at five of BJ Penn’s best moments:

Last week legendary former UFC lightweight and former UFC welterweight champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn took to his official twitter account, hinting at a potential return to action and indicating that he would be training with highly touted coach Greg Jackson.

Appearing on today’s (January 19, 2016) edition of the MMA Hour, the 37 year old confirmed his comeback, noting that he has his eyes on the featherweight title:

“That’s who I am, Ariel,” Penn told host Ariel Helwani. “That’s who I am. That’s what I do.

“I want to go get that 145-pound belt. That’s definitely a huge motivation for me. I believe with Greg Jackson’s help, I can get that done. And I believe that I will be able to walk away as the only man with three titles in three weight divisions.”

Although it would be incredibly difficult given the current state of his career, Penn would indeed make history if he were able to capture 145-pound gold.

Losing his last three bouts to date, the former two division world champion retired after coming out on the short end of a one sided beating against Frankie Edgar in 2014. Apparently not quite ready to call it quits just yet, “The Prodigy” knows this is his last chance, but with Jackson in his corner he seems confident in his future:

“I’ve been kind of thinking about it for a while. But, this is my last resort, and I’m going to give it everything I got,” Penn said.

“I made sure to tell Greg, I let him know the other day that if I can’t do this, Greg, in any way, shape, or form, you feel that B.J. doesn’t belong in the ring, please let me know. Please let me know. And he’s very confident that we can get something done. With somebody like that, who has so many champions himself and who has does as well as he has in this sport, when he tells me that: ‘I know you can go out and I know you can beat all these guys,’ it gives me a lot of confidence.”

Having not won a single bout since 2010, Penn wants to assure himself that he won’t return in the form he had been fighting in near the tail end of his run, but at the end of the day, he’s eager to challenge himself against the best fighters in the world:

“I don’t want to be a shell of my former self,” Penn said. “And I told Jackson that if I can’t do this, you let me know. You come straight to me, Greg. You see me sparring one day, you look at me and say ‘this guy don’t got it anymore,’ pull the plug right now. I got a wonderful life back in Hawaii. I love my life. But I love fighting more.

“I realize what I’m up against. I’ll go out right now and give all my respect to these guys. These guys are animals. These guys are the best athletes in the world, and I want to go and take my place among them.”

Although the cards seemed to be stacked against him, Penn is a special type of athlete, and Jackson is notorious for reviving the careers of those who have seemed to be passed by.

As for what the future holds, UFC President Dana White also confirmed the news, but has nothing planned as of now:

“(It’s) true,” White wrote via text message when contacted by MMAjunkie. “But I don’t know when or who he will fight.”

If you though BJ Penn was staying retired, think again. You have to check out Nik Lentz’s reaction to Penn’s statement though, it’s priceless…

Former UFC welterweight and lightweight champ BJ Penn recently announced he was training at the famed Jackson’s MMA with fellow ex-champion Jon Jones. He issued a stern challenge to his rival Nik Lentz, stating he wanted to fight ‘The Carny’ at UFC 197. It all stemmed from an offensive poem that Lentz wrote about Penn and his family, that got the Hawaiian BJJ ace all riled up, and now looking like he is fully ready to make his comeback to MMA.

So the news of Penn’s potential comeback hasn’t even began to settle in, and already Lentz has fired back with a wicked comeback, half statement, and half poem. Who’d have known that Nik Lentz was such a poet? This runs a lot deeper than just a little beef before a potential fight though, the situation with famed nutritionist Mike Dolce is embroiled in this whole saga too.

fight night 60 live

‘The Prodigy’ had hired Mike Dolce to handle his gruesome final weight cut for his trilogy making fight against Frankie Edgar back in 2014. Of course we now know that Penn had no business fighting at featherweight, where Frankie is more of a beast than he was at lightweight in all fairness. As it was, BJ got smashed, but he came out and blasted Dolce in the media after the fight, claiming he hadn’t done his job at all, and refusing to pay the dietary advisor the $22,000 that was owed to him.
