Legendary former UFC two division champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn announced last month that at age 37 he would be making a return to competitive mixed martial arts (MMA).

Recently guaranteeing that he would make his comeback at March 5’s UFC 196, it appears as if the plan has now changed.

Speaking with his own BJPenn.com, “The Prodigy” said that he and the UFC have agreed that returning at April 23’s UFC 197 would make more sense for all parties involved:

“I thought the fight guaranteed was going to happen because the UFC, they set up medicals for me to do,” Penn said. “I did the medicals and they were sending a film crew down and we were getting all that together and I assumed we were setting up the fight, and that might have been what was happening. But, at the end of the day, [UFC matchmaker] Sean Shelby called me and said it would be more convenient for all of us to move the fight to April 23.”

While an opponent for Penn has still yet to be named, the tough and gritty Hawaiian has been preparing nonetheless, and he has been doing so under some of the best in the game at Jackson’s MMA in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Training alongside top names such as former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, bantamweight title holder Holly Holm, Donald Cerrone, and Carlos Condit, Penn is undoubtedly giving himself the best chance possible to make another run in this sport.

With that being said, he plans to stay put up until the fight:

“You have heard ‘what you feed the most, grows the biggest,’ and I’m going to stay here and immerse myself in the martial arts and see how good I can get,” Penn said.

Despite having gone winless in his last four bouts to date, “The Prodigy” feels as if he can still hang with the best.

Although our most recent memories of BJ Penn inside of the Octagon may be difficult to digest, the former UFC lightweight and former UFC welterweight champion remains as a pioneer of the sport, and simply one of the most influential mixed martial artists of all-time.

That being said, heads were turned when the 37 year old Penn confirmed earlier this week that he would be making a return to competitive fighting.

“The Prodigy” had previously went into retirement after suffering a brutal beat down at the hands of Frankie Edgar back in 2014, a fight that marked his third consecutive loss.

Now apparently re-motivated and rejuvenated, “The Prodigy” is ready to make a comeback training under the tutelage of world class coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winklejohn.

Despite some not being in favor of Penn’s decision, it should be interesting to see what he makes of the opportunity.

As one of only two men to hold titles in two different weight classes, “The Prodigy” has sure had an illustrious career. Ahead of his upcoming return, let’s take a closer look at five of BJ Penn’s best moments:

Former two-weight UFC champion BJ Penn left the sport he once dominated on a terribly low note. Without a win since 2010, ‘The Prodigy’entered his 2014 trilogy maker with Frankie Edgar looking like a totally different fighter. For starters the bout was at featherweight, and Penn looked more like an anaemic E.T than the cold blooded killer of his prime days, and his gameplan was truly shot.

Using absurdly bad footwork and sloppy striking, Penn was handled easily by ‘The Answer’ and got finished with an ugly TKO. Retiring immediately after the fight, the MMA world waved goodbye to one of the most beloved legends of the sport. Then, this past week, BJ teased a comeback via his Twitter account, and had the MMA world once again talking about ‘The Prodigy.’

bj penn ufc gifAfter his foray in to the world of retirement, Penn was called out repeatedly by current UFC lightweight and former featherweight contender Nik Lentz. ‘The Carny’ even wrote a poem about BJ and his family that seemed to have struck a nerve with the former champion, as he later responded with some angry comments. But’s that’s not all, a video uploaded to MMA Digest on youtube shows BJ Penn training with ex-light heavyweight champ Jon Jones at Greg Jackson’s, and suggests ‘The Prodigy’ is in training for a comeback at UFC 197. Check it out:

Great news for fans of the Hawaiian grappling whizz, although at 37 years of age will he be able to have an impact against even the mid tier fighters at lightweight? Challenging Nik Lentz to meet him at UFC 197 on March 5, 2015, it probably won’t be long until we find out.
