BJ Penn is lucky to be alive after suffering multiple injuries during a freak wave pool incident in 2020.

The UFC legend took to social media on Sunday to relive the near-death experience that left him with multiple fractures.

“Last year when I got sucked into a wave pool engine room and thought I was going to die… I kept thinking “don’t die for your kids” I was surfing for a about an hour and the line started getting longer to catch the wave,” BJ Penn wrote on Instagram. “I was sitting next to the owner of the wave pool by the “wall” where the waves come from. The first wave it shoots out is a dud to get everyone ready for the next wave. The dud wave came back and because I was so close to the wall the wave swallowed me and pushed me and my surfboard underneath a huge cement wall. I remember feeling like I was getting sucked in a pipe and at that moment I got scared. It ended up pushing me into a big dark cement room that fills up with water to push the next wave for the wave pool. It felt like I was in the movie SAW or Final destination. The room would fill up with water to the top and I would hold my breath and then it would push the water out to make the wave and it was really rough inside there. Everything I bumped up against in the room that hurt me got infected. I got a bad sinus infection and a couple facial fractures from getting knocked around the cement walls and from the fractures the dirty water got in my face and infected my whole sinus. I was on antibiotics for three weeks for my face. While I was in the wave pool engine room I knew that one of my friends outside from big island is a legendary surfer and I knew he would come in there to rescue me so I stayed calm. A lot of other people might have panicked and maybe gave up but I just stayed strong for my kids. Anyway to make a long story short I survived that mother fucker ??? !! The name of the people and water park have been left out. I not the kine guy shows up to your house to play and gets hurt and tries to sue you so all love ? to everyone who helped me get there and helped me survive ? Maybe I was the first guy in history to get sucked into a wave pool engine room while it is in operation but no matter what happens in life and no matter how scary it is if I can offer you any advice I would just say to “stay calm”. If I didn’t fight tough cunts my whole life I might have panicked, but it was just another day in the office”

The former two-weight UFC champion hasn’t fought since being released by the promotion in 2019. Penn is winless in his last eight fights. Right now, it’s unclear if he will return to any form of fighting ever again.

BJ Penn is in trouble with the law once again.

As per MMA Fighting, the UFC Hall of Famer was arrested January 23 in Honokaa, Hawaii, on suspicion of DUI. The arrest came after a complaint towards Penn for reckless driving, Hawaii County Police Department spokesperson Denise Laitinen confirmed.

Penn’s arrest came to light after a video surfaced Monday that showed the Hawaiian — who was notably belligerent and cursing at a civilian — being put in a police car.

Penn nor his family rep Gary Levitt have responded for comment as of yet.

It is just the latest in a long list of issues involving Penn who most recently in February last year was hospitalized and later investigated for DUI after flipping his car in a single-vehicle accident.

The former UFC lightweight champion was released by the promotion in 2019. Despite being one of the most talented fightersin the sport’s history, Penn has repeatedly tainted his legacy not only with these incidents, but also with his recent run that saw him winless in his last eight outings. He holds a 16-14-2 record as a result.

Whether he has retired for good remains to be seen, though.

Much to the relief of everyone in the combat sports world, it looks like BJ Penn has finally retired from mixed martial arts (MMA).

During a recent Instagram Live session from former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, Penn appeared and praised him for still being active in the sport.

At the same time, he may have announced his own retirement from the sport:

“Tito got me in the game, I’m retired he still pounding guys ! That says all”

Penn, 41, last competed in May last year when he was outpointed by Clay Guida at UFC 237. That setback made it seven defeats in a row for the former lightweight champion who had taken plenty of punishment during that run.

Many had since called for him to retire but that didn’t seem to be the plan for the Hawaiian who was slated to face Nik Lentz next. That was, until he was involved in a street fight with a civilian where he got knocked out. He was subsequently released from his UFC contract shortly afterwards.

Given the problems he has faced since, it is probably the best thing for Penn that he is no longer competing in MMA.

What do you make of Penn’s comment? Do you believe he’s truly done with MMA?
