Bobby Lashley (15-2 MMA) who is known now as the ‘WWE Champion’, can also be remembered by people for his MMA prowess.

The former United States soldier has seen himself compete in MMA for eight whole years across his career, fighting for premier promotions such as Strikeforce and Bellator. Whilst competing for Scott Coker’s promotion, Lashley went on a very impressive 5-0 undefeated run with the organization.

Bobby Lashley never had a full training camp throughout his career

In an interview with Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour, Lashley expressed that he could not help but feel jealous of his business rival and former UFC Heavyweight Champion, Brock Lesnar, for building a gym next to his house in Alexandra Minnesota, as he was unable to have a full-fledged training camp during his MMA career. (Transcribed by FightFans.co.uk)

Despite Bobby Lashley having a relationship with the American Top Team and Dan Lambert, he admitted only planned on fighting once.

“I think because when I came into it, I came into it with the wrong mind frame. When I originally came into fighting, I came into it saying I want to do one fight.

‘Then I won one fight, then another fight, and then another fight, and then all these things started getting thrown at me.”

Lashley further went on to state that regardless of having training partners like, Josh Barnett. he was having to fly in and out to see his children as he was a single father at the time.

‘The All Mighty’ concluded that if you are a professional fighter trying to move up the MMA ladder, they need a plan and fixed training camps.

“I was like, if I want to do this thing full time, get in the UFC and make a run or stay with Bellator and run for that title, I’ve got to put it all together and it was challenging. I didn’t find a way that I could do it and I didn’t want to take any time away from my kids, so I was kind of in an awkward situation.” (Transcribed by FightFans.co.uk

The former Bellator man has now recently won the WWE title at the organization’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view, after defeating the former champion, Brock Lesnar.

15-2 former professional mixed martial artist, Bobby Lashley spoke up his chances of defeating former undisputed UFC heavyweight championship holder, Brock Lensar recently ahead of last night’s professional wrestling event, Royal Rumble – and managed to prevail last night, scoring a pinfall win.

Bobby Lashley, who last competed in professional mixed martial arts back in October 2016, submitted Josh Appelt with a second round rear-naked choke at Bellator 162 – improving to 15-2 as a professional.

The victory came as Bobby Lashley’s fifth under the Scott Coker-led Bellator banner, and as of 2018, the renowned finisher remained under contract with the organization after his return to the WWE to pursue professional wrestling again.

Brock Lesnar successfully landed two defenses of his UFC heavyweight title between 2009 and 2010

For Lesnar, the former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion made his final mixed martial arts appearance in a short notice UFC 200 bout against Mark Hunt in an eventual official ‘No Contest’ after taking home a unanimous decision win.

Lesnar was subsequently issued a lengthy USADA suspension after testing positive for clomiphene during in-competition drug tests ahead of his brief UFC comeback and confirmed his retirement from the sport soon thereafter.

Earlier in the night, however. Lesnar, who eventually went on to win the men’s instalment of the Royal Rumble – suffered a pinfall loss against Bobby Lashley after interference from Roman Reigns and Lesnar’s manager, Paul Heyman in a WWE Championship match.

Before Lesnar’s rumble victory, another former UFC champion, former bantamweight titleholder, Ronda Rousey made her return to the Vince McMahon outfit – winning the women’s instalment of the rumble match.

Ending her professional career boasting a 12-2 professional record, Rousey, a former UFC and Strikeforce bantamweight champion suffered consecutive knockout losses to former bantamweight titleholders, Holly Holm, and Amanda Nunes in 2015, and 2016, respectively to end her career.

Rousey currently ties current flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko for most successful title defenses amongst women in the UFC with six successful knockbacks against Liz Carmouche, Miesha Tate, Sara McMann, Alexis Davis, Cat Zingano, and Bethe Correia.

Just days ahead of his upcoming WWE Championship bout at Royal Rumble with Brock Lesnar, Bobby Lashley weighed in on who he thought was the better mixed martial arts fighter between the two.

In a recent sitdown with Ariel Helwani on his show, The MMA Hour, Lashley was asked who he thought was the more skilled MMA fighter. The question was initially met with some hesitance but ultimately, ‘The Almighty’ had to go with himself.

Without trying to disrespect him, I don’t know what he’s capable doing as far as, like, skill wise because I don’t know. Afterwards, I taught boxing, I taught jiu-jitsu at my gym.” Lashley continued by saying, “as far as skill for skill and knowledge for knowledge, I have a lot more than he does.”

Check out the full interview below.

Lashley went on to discuss the early days of his MMA career and the way he approached combat, saying that he was a student of the game who trained with the mentality that he was always there to sharpen his skills in some way.

Bobby Lashley Has Not Had Martial Arts Fight In Over Five Years

The last time Lashley fought in an organized MMA fight was at Bellator 162 in 2016 when he defeated Josh Appelt. Lashley fought for the promotion a total of five times and won every contest by finish.

Lashley ultimately chose to fight with Bellator because president Scott Coker allowed for him to compete in WWE while still under contract. It was announced in 2018 that Lashley was still under contract with the promotion, but he has not fought since as he has shifted his focus back to pro wrestling full time for now.

Colby Covington was once just another young prospect in the UFC’s welterweight division. After being submitted by Warrlley Alves in his fourth UFC bout, Covington was off to the races. He dominated each of his next four opponents, earning him a date with former title challenger Demian Maia in 2017.

Ever since grabbing the microphone and declaring the jeering Brazilian audience to be “filthy animals” that night, Colby Covington has left it dialed up at 11, making him one of the most polarizing and spotlighted members of the UFC roster.

According to a former American Top Team teammate, this shift by Covington was not a spontaneous movement. In a recent interview, Bobby Lashley took a lion’s share of the credit for Covington’s career makeover.

Lashley claims he was responsible for introducing Covington to the world of professional wrestling, and that is when the proverbial lightbulb clicked for the Oregon State alum.

“I was the one that actually brought him into the business originally,” Lashley said of Covington in an interview with Comicbook.com. “Because originally, we did some stuff before, brought him into that world, and that’s where he learned this part in the marketing aspect of him being a fighter. And he really turned his whole career around. He was at the point where he was just beating guys and no one really knew him. And then he got into the wrestling world. The next thing you know, he’s main eventing”

Lashley believes that Covington could also find success if he decided to take his talents to the world of professional wrestling. Covington has stated in the past he’d be open to joining the WWE in the future. If that were to happen, we could very well see a ‘teacher vs pupil’ feud between “The Almighty” Bobby Lashley and Colby “Chaos” Covington.

Colby Covington last competed at UFC 268, challenging rival Kamaru Usman in a losing effort. As for Bobby Lashley, the former WWE champion will be competing tonight at the WWE Survivor Series event in a Team Raw vs. Team Smackdown elimination bout as a member of Team Raw.

Do you think Colby Covington would be a good fit for the WWE?

Bobby Lashley says Colby Covington could one day transition to professional wrestling.

The WWE champion used to train with Covington at American Top Team during his days as an MMA fighter.

During a recent interview with Helen Yee, Lashley was asked if his old friend would do well in the WWE.

“Well, he has the heel role down, huh”, Lashley replied. “You know, when he first started out – and bless him – when he first started out, he was one of those guys. You know, you’ve watched Colby’s career and Colby was beating everybody before. And he was one of those guys that was just not getting a break. And he came and he did a little stint with me over in Impact (Wrestling), and he did some professional wrestling stuff.

“And I think one of the guys started kind of feeding him some lines there for a while. And then people started hating him, and they started getting him the matches that he wanted. So, you know, you can be mad at him for the things that he said, but you can’t be mad at him for the things that he did. So, I think, for somebody like him, he has that fan base that he’s built up as being a heel. So, you never know. Never say never.” (Transcribed by Sportskeeda)

Covington is set to rematch Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title at UFC 268 on November 6. ‘Chaos’ and ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ previously fought at UFC 245, in one of the best welterweight title fights of all time. Usman emerged victorious on that occasion via fifth-round TKO.

Lashley hasn’t competed in MMA since October 2016. The former Bellator fighter amassed a 15-2 record before leaving the sport to return to professional wrestling. Lashley successfully defended his WWE title against Goldberg at SummerSlam this past weekend.

Do you agree with Bobby Lashley? Does Colby Covington’s ability to embrace the role of heel give him a potential future in the WWE?

Professional wrestling and mixed martial arts are sports that have been continually linked ever since the UFC’s inception.

Brock Lesnar was the first cross-promotional star who broke PPV records for the UFC at the time.

Since then, CM Punk, Ronda Rousey, Jake Hager and many others have switched careers between the two sports.

Bobby Lashley is no different. The former Bellator and Strikeforce heavyweight amassed an impressive 15-2 record in MMA

The 44-year-old holds several high-profile wins over the likes of Jason Guida, Bob Sapp and James Thompson.

‘The Dominator’ has not fought in MMA since 2016, when he defeated Josh Appelt via rear naked choke submission. However, he has been considerably more active in the wrestling ring.

Lashley’s success culminated in a title match against The Miz. Lashley dominated his opponent, before swiftly submitting him. Thus another former MMA fighter lifts the WWE belt.

He will now likely face off against Drew McIntyre at Wrestlemania 37.

Do you think Bobby Lashley will ever return to MMA?
