Paulie Malignaggi is ready to fight again.

However, this time, it’ll be in a slightly different environment.

Per a press release, the former WBA welterweight champion has signed with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship. Malignaggi exits retirement to test himself in a different venture. A venture that the likes of former UFC fighters Artem Lobov and Jason “The Kid” Knight have recently signed on for.

Malignaggi is a former boxing champion with a career record of 36-8. Only seven of his victories have come by way of knockout. He had this to say about his new journey with BKFC:

“I’ve accomplished some big things in my boxing career, and I look forward to what this next phase brings. After a long boxing career, it’s easy to miss the limelight and the rush that combat brings. I look forward to getting back in action and the new challenge of fighting for BKFC.”

BKFC President David Feldman sounds very excited about now having a former boxing world champion on his roster:

“At this time in our company’s growth, we needed to add a legitimate and well-established world champion boxer to our roster, and I believe with Paulie’s ability and personality we’ve done just that. Paulie is the perfect fit for us.”

To make things even more interesting, NBC Sports Radio’s Helen Yee reports that Malignaggi is targeting a fight with Conor McGregor training partner Artem Lobov. Lobov will face fellow former UFC fighter Jason Knight on April 6th. McGregor and Malignaggi had a bad falling out after video of their sparring footage from 2017 leaked out online.

The pair have been bitter enemies ever since. If Lobov wins his fight against Knight, expect BKFC to capitalize on the storyline:

“Sources have told me Paulie Malignaggi is about to sign with @bareknucklefc and is expected to fight Artem Lobov if he wins his fight April 6. @PaulMalignaggi@RusHammerMMA

Boxing fans will have to wait for the highly-anticipated rematch between WBC heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury.

The pair put on an absolute classic back in December. While both men could’ve arguably won the fight, the judges ruled the contest a majority draw. Talk of a rematch immediately began to dominate the newswire. Both Wilder and Fury seemed game to run things back off a quick turnaround. Of course, another roadblock has prevented that from happening.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) has announced that they’ve canceled their ordered Wilder vs. Fury rematch. They revealed mandatory challenger Dominic Breazeale will now get a shot at Wilder’s title after failed negotiations for the Fury fight (via IOL):

“WBC world heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder shall fulfil his mandatory obligations by fighting Dominic Breazeale next.”

WBC added that both parties have until April 4th to reach an agreement on terms and conditions for the contest. If no agreement can be made, then a purse bid will be held by the sanctioning body for the fight. That doesn’t seem like it’ll be an issue, however.

ESPN reports the Wilder and Breazeale camps are discussing a May 18th date from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Wilder’s co-manager, Shelly Finkel, had this to say:

“We’re hoping to get it done,” Finkel said. “Hopefully, it will happen this week or next week, and hopefully it’s done. At this point, it’s not done. But I think (Breazeale) is a competitive and viable opponent.”

He is a competitive opponent, but the overall boxing fanbase was looking for Wilder vs. Fury II. It could still happen someday, but Fury’s recent multi-fight contract with ESPN to air his fights in the US put a damper on that.

Vitor Belfort would go on to defeat a boxing legend two years after the following article was published. Indeed, Belfort beat 58-year-old Evander Holyfield via R1 TKO last September in an exhibition bout. But in 2019, Belfort wanted to box another former boxing champion, Roy Jones Jr.

You can see how Roy Jones Jr. responded to this challenge in the following article published three years ago today.

The following article is presented to you in its original, unaltered form, courtesy of The MMA News Archives.

On This Day Three Years Ago…

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED MARCH 6, 2019, 12:19 PM]

Vitor Belfort is now a member of the ONE Championship roster. “The Phenom” joins the likes of Eddie Alvarez, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson, and “Super” Sage Northcutt as former UFC stars who recently made the move. The 41-year-old spoke to media recently after the announcement of his signing with ONE.

Belfort revealed that one fight he’d really like to make happen is a boxing fight with legend Roy Jones Jr.:

“One fight that I’d really like, I told Chatri [Sityodtong] I’d really like to put on this fight, is me vs. Roy Jones Jr. So Roy, wherever you are, I want to come challenge you for a boxing match — but with this condition. I’m going to be able to dirty box with you.

“I won’t be able to kick you, but I will be able to dirty box with you. I’m going to be in your face the whole time so it’s going to be a different boxing match. So that would be a very fun thing to do.”

Speaking to TMZ Sports recently, Jones got the chance to respond to Belfort’s challenge. Jones said he’s down to step into the squared circle with the mixed martial arts (MMA) legend (via Boxing Scene):

“This is what I do for a living. Y’all must’ve forgot. That’s who I am. I love a battle. I love a challenge. So, if that’s what you want, that’s what you get. Ain’t like you gotta ask me twice,” Jones said.

Jones then said he’d need at least six weeks of a training camp to “whoop” Belfort, but he’d need eight so he can showboat:

“Well, I would like eight weeks, ’cause I like to get right. I need two extra weeks just to make sure I can showboat. But, six weeks, I can whip you,” Jones said.

“I got nothing but the utmost respect for you. You were a helluva MMA fighter. You one of the best of all time. But, when it comes to boxing, this is what I do. I’m the ruler. I’m the king of this thing.

“Ya understand me? Since Muhammad Ali is not on Earth anymore, I don’t think there’s nothing ever on this Earth as bad as I am with these hands.”

What do you think about Jones accepting Belfort’s challenge to box?
