Alex Pereira shuts down dream boxing fight despite encouragement from Anthony Joshua

Despite receiving encouragement overnight from former two-time heavyweight world champion, Anthony Joshua to make a move to boxing, former two-weight UFC champion, Alex Pereira claims he is likely too old to make a transition to the sport, revealing it was his “dream” to compete in the sport.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight champion and the current light heavyweight champion, returned to action just last weekend in the main event of UFC 303 – headlining the International Fight Week card on short-notice.

“Alex Pereira should make a boxing debut one day,” Anthony Joshua posted on his official X account overnight. 

And replying to the Watford native’s comments, Pereira pointed to his age, but admitted a potential move to professional boxing would be a “dream” come true for him.

Nate Diaz reacts to Conor McGregor's $1,625.000 bet win after Jorge Masvidal fight that's cool

Turning in a majority decision win overnight against fellow UFC alum, Jorge Masvidal in California, Nate Diaz also netted former foe, Conor McGregor a cool $1,625,000 in wager winning following his victory on the West Coast.

Diaz, a former title challenger under the banner of the UFC, made his second appearance in the squared circle overnight in a 175lbs light heavyweight clash with the above-mentioned, Masvidal in the pair’s headliner in California.

And impressing onlookers, fans, and pundits alike with his majority decision win over Masvidal – who has since called for a rematch fight on neutral ground, Diaz has laid out immediate plans to take on all comers in his next outing.

Welcoming a rematch with incumbent UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards in an expected return to the Octagon next, Diaz also offered to fight former foe, Jake Paul once again – whom defeated him back in August of last year in a unanimous decision shutout.

Backed to the tune of $500,000 by his former two-time rival, McGregor overnight, Diaz’s victory over Floridian veteran, Masvidal landed the Dubliner a massive $1,625,000 payout as a result.

Reacting to his prior opponent’s sizeable windfall, Diaz simply claimed McGregor’s bet win was “cool”. 

Sharing a distinct history with McGregor during the pair’s respective tenures in the UFC, DIaz defended the former two-weight champion’s decision to withdraw from a return last month due to a toe injury, before stressing his desire to fight him for a third time in the future.

“I see it as a fight that needs to happen,” Nate Diaz continued. “We got the second out of the way, and the third should have happened straight away, also. And at some point, it’s going to happen.”

After losing to him in the UFC in 2019, Nate Diaz has scored revenge in the boxing ring, defeating Jorge Masvidal via majority decision in the main event of a card on July 6 in Anaheim, California.

Diaz and Masvidal both brought it from the opening bell. Diaz set the pace early, but Masvidal fired off solid shots of his own. Masvidal seemingly took control then, continuing to land the more effective and powerful blows. Masvidal continued this into the fourth round, but Diaz started to bring out the volume.

Masvidal worked the body, but Diaz seemed to have more energy as the fight got to the halfway mark. That volume helped him bring forward pressure to Masvidal in the sixth round.

The themes continued into the final few rounds, with Diaz landing noteworthy shots, but Masvidal landing the cleaner and more powerful punches, proving it to be anyone’s battle.

Ultimately, it was Diaz who came out on top, winning on 97-93 and a 98-92 scorecards. The third scorecard was a 95-95 draw.

Fight Fans React To Close, Controversial Decision Win For Nate Diaz Over Jorge Masvidal In Boxing Ring

Diaz went on to call out Jake Paul and Leon Edwards after the fight, looking for revenge against Paul in his next outing before intending to return to the UFC and challenge the welterweight champion.

Masvidal, meanwhile, will look for a trilogy bout with Diaz. His post-fight comments saw some tense words exchanged between the pair.

Diaz and Masvidal first met five years ago in the UFC at UFC 244. At New York’s Madison Square Garden, Masvidal scored a controversial third-round doctor’s stoppage win over Diaz to become the first ‘BMF’ champion. Masvidal then lost his next four fights, retiring in 2023 following a loss to Gilbert Burns.

Masvidal’s sole professional boxing match prior to tonight came in 2005, defeating Joseph Benjamin via majority decision.

Diaz fought twice more in UFC after the loss, dropping a decision to Leon Edwards and scoring a submission of Tony Ferguson. Diaz made his professional boxing debut last year, losing to Paul.

McGregor, a former two-time foe of Californian veteran, Diaz has tasted both defeat and success against the UFC product, and has forever found himself tied to a potential trilogy rubber match down the line between the duo.

“I’ve decided to put $500,000 on Diaz to win tonight’s boxing match,” Conor McGregor posted on his official X account. “Range, form, experience, solely hands being used, I can’t see Masvidal causing any problems to Nate in a boxing ring whatsoever. They are both little play around dipsh*ts in a fight, play around b*llox, but I feel Nate does him in EASY here for real. $500k gets me back $1,625,00 all in.”

Making his sophomore outing in professional boxing tonight, TUF winner, Diaz is reportedly set to land himself a $500,000 payday for his efforts against Masvidal, with the Miami native slated to net a $300,000 purse to boot.
