Here’s some unsurprising news: Due to their ongoing personal/legal troubles, Paul Daley and Maiquel Falcao were officially released from their Bellator contracts yesterday. While there are many things to take away from this decision, we think the most important one is that someone finally figured out how to break a Bellator contract without being sued. QUICK, EDDIE, TAKE TO THE STREETS!

You might recall that we slightly jumped the gun on Daley’s release after it had been reported that he was involved in a bar brawl (or “pub pugilistic” as they are known in London), the legal repercussions of which prevented him from entering the U.S. and competing under the Bellator banner. But in hindsight, we’ll just chalk up that previous article to our keen sense of premonition, pat ourselves on the back and order another Glen Garioch neat.

Falcao, on the other hand, found his legal trouble in the form of a wild gas station brawl (or “Thursday” as they are known in Brazil) that left his friend and fellow MMA fighter Kaue Mena hospitalized to this day. Video: Maiquel Falcao Smacks a Woman, Starting a Gas Station Brawl That Ends With Another Man Beaten Unconscious

From his past assault charges to his tendency to keep punching his opponents long after the fight has been stopped, Bellator middleweight Maiquel Falcao has always seemed like the kind of dude you’d cross the street to avoid. Unfortunately, new surveillance footage from a gas station brawl in Brazil provides even more proof that “Big Rig” is an out-of-control jackass.

Watch the news report above and you’ll see the following: Falcao approaches a woman at a gas station, then angrily swats her in the ear with what appears to be his wallet. The woman and her friend go outside for backup, and three men arrive to confront Falcao and his companion, undefeated MMA featherweight Kaue Mena. Falcao is sucker-punched, which kicks off a wild brawl that spills outside.

Some dude in a red jacket shows up with a 2×4, and hits Falcao over the head twice with it, which knocks him down (and possibly out). The same guy then cracks Mena in the face with the piece of lumber, and Mena falls backward, his head making hard impact with the concrete. A guy in a white shirt repeatedly punches Mena in the face, and kicks him in the head at least twice. Everybody involved leaves the scene before the cops arrive, leaving Mena’s unconscious body behind. Keep in mind, this all started because Maiquel Falcao struck a woman in public.

According to BloodyElbow, Mena is currently in serious condition at the intensive care unit at the Hospital do Coração, and no arrests have been made in connection with the incident. Falcao last competed in February of this year, when he was knocked out by Alexander Shlemenko.

George Sotiropoulos Was Allegedly K.O.’d by Ross Pearson’s Boxing Coach on the Set of ‘TUF: The Smashes’

If we ever re-launch our MMA Mythology comic series — which, like so many CagePotato features before it, sputtered out immediately after its debut — the tale of George Sotiropoulos getting knocked out off-camera during the filming of TUF: The Smashes would definitely deserve its own installment.

According to Team U.K. coach Ross Pearson, the incident occurred midway through the show’s filming, and began with some smack-talk between he and G-Sots over Twitter. At some point, Pearson’s assistant boxing coach Erin Beach* inserted himself into the eDrama. So, the next time Sotiropoulos saw Beach on set, the Australian fighter threw a punch at him. Beach fought back, and knocked Sotiropoulos clean out. MMAJunkie has more details:

The scrap drew an instant response from UFC President Dana White, who raised Pearson and his team on the phone. “Dana chewed our heads off,” Pearson said. “George was acting unprofessional. I get paid to fight; I don’t fight in the streets for free.”

While Sotiropoulos’ alleged KO would not have fallen within a time frame to preclude him from competing against Pearson, it could have severely affected his preparation if he allowed himself to recover.

As you’d imagine, any mention of the incident was scrubbed from the series. Sotiropoulos went on to suffer a third-round TKO at the hands of Pearson during Friday’s Smashes Finale, becoming the first TUF coach to (allegedly) be knocked out twice on the same season. Sotiropoulos is currently on a three-fight losing streak in the Octagon, and now that he’s drawn the wrath of his boss, his future in the promotion is very uncertain.
