Sonnen reportedly beat up a man and was charged with five battery citations.
Reactions were coming from every direction in the MMA world. Brendan Schaub has given one of the more direct responses. He claims to have spoken with Sonnen, who provided him with additional information on the situation.
According to Schaub, the incident had nothing to do with domestic violence as some had claimed.
The former UFC heavyweight also says that this case is nothing like the Jon Jones case that has been ongoing. (H/T sportskeeda.com)
“So I think by Chael doing this, it just adds to the legend of Chael Sonnen. He was protecting his girl. And for that dumbass who got absolutely annihilated by the great Chael Sonnen, you deserved it man. And that’s what you get. So you play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
“This is not a case of Chael hitting his wife like Jon [Jones] did. I think they dropped the charges. This is not a case of Chael Sonnen being high and wrecking his Bentley with strippers in the car. This is not the case of Chael domestic violence in any facet. And I think everyone should hold their judgement to get more details.”
Brendan Schaub provides more details on the incident.
Schaub also gave more details on what happened, which he claims is Chael Sonnen’s own version. According to Schaub, Sonnen was with his wife at a Las Vegas hotel when a man started making lewd comments toward her. He also believes that the man deserves what came to him when messing with a legendary fighter.
“Here’s what happened is Chael was obviously working and he was with his wife and his wife is a f*cking saint and also a dime piece. And some drunk guy with his girl kept making comments about his wife, saying about her t**s, her a**, right in front of him. Well, play stupid games, win stupid prizes, cause you are talking and disrespecting one of the toughest guys on the planet and definitely one of the toughest ever to compete in the UFC or Bellator for that matter. And you’re doing it in front of his face, then there’s gonna be repercussions. And any guy that wanted to do that for their girl/ladies you got a girlfriend.”

Brendan Schaub is not happy with Jon Jones for talking about God after being arrested for domestic violence.
Schaub has had some big things to say in the wake of Jones being arrested once again. Jones is accused of headbutting a cop car in Las Vegas after an incident with his wife that saw his children reportedly begging hotel staff to call authorities. Following this incident, the former light heavyweight champion seemingly downplayed the whole thing, sharing videos of him and his wife together and saying that he was finding the right path in life.
One of these messages in the wake of this arrest saw Jones saying that his life could have been over after the incident, but God had other plans. This was the same tweet in which he made the ill-fated claim of being 60 days sober, just 58 days after the Las Vegas arrest.
“‘Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour,'” Jones wrote. “My family, my life, my career could’ve been over after what happened in Las Vegas. But God had other plans for me. 60 days sober and counting”
Brendan Schaub seemed to take particular umbrage with the statement that God had other plans for Jon Jones. Speaking on the Fighter and the Kid podcast, the retired heavyweight turned stand-up comedian lambasted Jones for bringing God into this, saying that he is self-sabotaging himself and has likely lost tons of money over the years due to his various issues.
“God had nothing to do with you hitting your wife, my man,” Schaub said (h/t Bloody Elbow). “I was speaking with someone very high up from the UFC about Jon Jones and that guy was like, ‘think how much money he has missed out on, with all the bullshit he’s done in his life. The millions and millions of dollars, the Nike endorsement, the big fights, everything!… Self-sabotage.”
Brendan Schaub certainly brings up a valid point about the things that have been lost due to the bad decisions that Jon Jones has made in his life. Time will tell if the former champ will get things back on track or if this will just end up being another chapter in a cautionary tale.

Former UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub has given his take on former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor’s recent antics outside the Octagon.
Since his last fight, McGregor has been keeping himself in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. To go along with the attacks on Dustin Poirier and his family on social media, the Irishman also set his sights on former foe Khabib Nurmagomedov. In a particularly troubling tweet, McGregor appeared to poke fun at the death of the Dagestani’s father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.
Whilst McGregor’s verbal jabs have been enough to draw criticism, his recent physical altercations have drawn flak from all corners of the MMA community, sports world, and media. The first concerning incident occurred on the red carpet ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards in September. After reportedly being refused a request for a picture with rapper Machine Gun Kelly, “The Notorious” star flipped and was seen throwing his drink in the direction of MGK. Whilst the pair didn’t come to blows, it seemed likely they would have had McGregor got close enough.
Barely a month after that near-scrap, the Dubliner went one step further. While in Italy for the baptism of his newborn son Rian and the collection of his Lamborghini yacht, McGregor allegedly punched Italian DJ Francesco Facchinetti inside a Rome nightclub. The DJ posted images of his bloody lip after what he claimed to be an unprovoked attack. After troubling details emerged, it was confirmed that the Irishman will be facing assault charges after the incident.
Schaub Suggests A Reason For McGregor’s Frequent Altercations
From UFC Hall of Famer Michael Bisping to YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul, a host of names have slammed McGregor for his recent actions. The latest to do so is podcast host, comedian, and former fighter Brendan Schaub.
During a recent episode of his Below the Belt podcast, Schaub said that while he’s a huge fan of McGregor, there’s no way anyone can defend him for his behavior in recent months. “Big Brown” believes the former UFC double champ’s struggle to stay away from controversy derives from his fear of losing the immense fame he’s come to find.
“You guys know this, I fucking love Conor McGregor. Still do. Can’t defend him for any of the stuff he has been doing but I just think that he’s lost his identity and I think the casuals go, ‘Dude, he has a billion dollars.’ It’s not about money. There’s this sacred thing of fame that he’s scared of losing and I think he doesn’t know how to deal with it.” (h/t Sportskeeda)
McGregor was last in action at UFC 264 earlier this year. After being knocked out for the first time in his professional career six months earlier in his rematch with Poirier, the pair collided for a blockbuster trilogy in July.
However, with his recent actions and seemingly yet another lawsuit to deal with, it remains to be seen whether McGregor’s run-ins with the law will finally affect his status in the promotion.
What do you think the reason behind Conor McGregor’s recent antics is?
After weeks of one of the strangest beefs in MMA history, Brendan Schaub says he is done squabbling with Ariel Helwani. For months, Helwani let Schaub talk about him without saying anything back, supposedly spreading lies fueled by Joe Rogan. Then from the dark depths rose the dreaded Kaiju, Heelwani, who had finally decided to […]
Nevertheless, Brendan Schaub has had enough of the squabbling between him and Helwani and decided to call an end to it all. Speaking on a recent episode of his podcast, the former UFC heavyweight explained that he and the journalist spoke on the phone, and he got an understanding of the impact his words had on Helwani.
“We had a conversation, a straight-up phone call like two grown-ups. I don’t hate the guy… I think this kind of spiraled out of control a little bit on his end because when I made those off-putting comments about him, I didn’t realize how bad I hurt him… The context on ‘Fighter and the Kid’, it came off as a joke. I get it from a number of different angles… Ariel, there might be some people out there who want to carry this on. That has nothing to do with me. This is it from here. This is it on my side of things,” said Schaub (h/t Sportskeeda).
Time will tell if this is truly the end of the Brandan Schuab vs Ariel Helwani beef or if either party will start things back up again for some other reason. In any event, seeing as how these two will never actually end up fighting each other, this was an odd back and forth between the two.

The ongoing Helwani-Schaub beef has been a delightfully entertaining sideshow in recent weeks, of which MMANews has proudly provided episodic coverage. We’ve not only seen the duo sling voluminous amounts of mud at each other, but also Helwani regularly incorporate into his lexicon a good deal of “Schaubisms”—butchered phrases (like that below) attributed to Brendan that have been popularized by the notoriously anti-Schaub The Fighter and the Kid subreddit, otherwise known as “PF Changs.”
Let’s Recap The Beef Thus Far
Things popped off last month when a furious Helwani defended his honor against disparaging claims about his career made by Schaub and Joe Rogan, including that the former ESPN reporter is difficult to work with.
Recently, Schaub did the exact opposite, taking aim at Hewlani once more and in the process, besmirching the entire industry of MMA media, who he characterized as “soy boys.” Helwani predictably fired back, calling Schaub out for hypocrisy, branding him “fake and phony,” before belittling his largely unsuccessful athletic career, and his faltering present comedic endeavors.
Helwani Claps Back By Tweeting Old Schaub Interview
On his podcast earlier this month, Schaub doubled down on his previous comments asserting that Helwani is difficult to work with, and dared The MMA Hour host to talk smack to his face.
“When you’re in MMA, you’re gonna get two things: Khabib is the GOAT and the journalist [Ariel Helwani] is a complete nightmare to work with…he can’t help it,” said Schaub (h/t Sportskeeda). “He’s the Ellen of MMA. He has no friends. We don’t even have a thing. You’re not coming after me because I’m doing bad. He’s not important to have a beef with. I dare you [Helwani], come on the show. You won’t talk like this in my face.”
To this, Helwani simply responded by tweeting video of an old interview with then UFC fighter Schaub, in which he makes a rather unflattering admission.
“I’m always scared to interview with you,” Schaub admits in the video. Upon Ariel asking him why, Brendan simply says; “I don’t know, man. I don’t know.”

Ariel Helwani has taken it upon himself to defend the honor of his fellow MMA journalists and the entire MMA community against retired UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub.
Today, we bring you another episode in the feud between renowned MMA reporter Ariel Helwani and Brendan Schaub. It all started with Helwani disputing claims made by Schaub and Joe Rogan about the journalist’s career. It would soon escalate with Helwani issuing a “final warning” to Schaub about mentioning his name again. So naturally, Schaub went and mentioned Helwani’s name again.
“This is what MMA media has to do,” Schaub began on his BELOW THE BELT podcast. “They have to come up with something to get clicks. They have to. This is what they do.
You look at it from the top with Ariel. Even now, ‘Oh, negativity, negativity. Look at me, guys, negativity, negativity!’ Alright, if that’s where you have to go, you probably don’t have any talent.”
The “this” Schaub is referring to is regarding an op-ed article that began circulating about Joe Rogan needing to be replaced from the UFC commentary team. Though Helwani had nothing to do with this piece, Schaub believes such journalism is a symptom of the larger disease of negativity that he feels plagues the MMA media.
“So it’s people, these soy boys that are outside the realm—bro, all these guys, all these journalists, all these bullshits websites, you’re not even in the club. As Chris Brown says, you’re in the line trying to get in the club. You can never get in the club. You’re not it. So what they do is the line of people outside the club who need to be relevant and talk shit to get clicks. Cuz nobody’s paying attention. Unless you book some big-name fighter or you have 17 fighters on your show, nobody gives a fuck about your personal opinion. So you have to muster something, trying to figure it out because everything you’ve ever done has never worked out for you. That’s how these guys operate.
“Even this will bring on shots,” Schaub predicted. “Just saying this. I don’t give a fuck, I don’t see any of it. You guys are sheep, and you write articles like this, or you have to interview 17 fighters (for) people to tune into your show, been fired from every job you’ve ever had. It is what it is. Haters gonna hate.”
Schaub was right about one thing. These latest comments did indeed bring on more shots.
Ariel Helwani Shoots Back At Brendan Schaub
During his “On The Nose” segment of The MMA Hour, Helwani was fielding questions from viewers about a wide array of topics. Among them was Brendan Schaub’s latest comments aimed at the MMA media.
Before diving in with a detailed response, Helwani stated that Schaub’s “subtle” barbs at him were not missed. More importantly, he expressed that he felt compelled to speak up on behalf of the entire MMA community in exposing Schaub’s fakeness.
“I came away from that little clip with a few conclusions,” Helwani’s soliloquy began. “Number one, the biggest one was: This man legitimately thinks that he is better than us. I want you guys to realize that. This man thinks he’s better than us. And when I say ‘us,” I don’t just mean me. I don’t just mean the MMA media. I mean you <points to camera> as well. Watch the demeanor; listen to the words. This man thinks that he is better than us.
“And he’s sitting back and he’s talking about having talent, not having talent, careers, money, jobs, places in life, pecking orders, what you’ve done, what you haven’t done, and casting all kinds of conclusions on people, all kinds of aspersions, all kinds of fabrications on people when, really, you don’t know what you’re talking about.
“And he sits there and he talks about how he wants to be positive and he talks about how he wants to have a good, peaceful life. Meanwhile, this is the guy that’s been talking shit for the past five years. This is the guy who is literally sitting there while talking about being positive, insulting MMA media, saying that they’re irrelevant, calling them hacks while saying that he wants to be positive. This is the guy, who after five years of listening to his lies about not just me but others as well, finally made me snap. Don’t get it twisted. This is not a positive fellow. Don’t fall for it. It’s, again, fake and phony.”
Helwani went on to explain that MMA journalists devote their lives to giving fighters the recognition they lack from mainstream media outlets. And while he disagrees with the editorial on Rogan, the journalist had a right to express his opinion. He pointed out that op-eds featuring the personal views of the author have always been a part of journalism. And while he commended Schaub for sticking up for his friend, the author was not out of bounds for having an opinion.
Helwani would then turn his attention to Schaub’s own professional endeavors in the climax of his “Heelwani” promo.
“Now, let’s talk about you,” Helwani began as if verbally rolling up his sleeves.
“College football, how’d that go? How’d NFL go? How did fighting go? How did comedy go? How did podcasting go? How did TV go? Did you achieve your goals? Did you realize your dreams? Did you make it to the top? Was your claim to fame being told by your friend that it was time to move on?
“And it was a great moment. I mean, we talked about it on this show. He put you over. You were the biggest babyface in the biz. You had it, silver platter. You had it. You were going after everyone. You were on this show, that show, you were the guy, the truth-teller. But how did those gigs go? And how are they going now? Don’t talk about other people’s jobs.”
Helwani would also point out the irony of Schaub himself spending his podcasts talking about what’s circulating in the MMA media. Yet, he still finds the time to call MMA journalists and devalue them as professionals. He also accused Schaub of plagiarizing the content of others, even dropping some names of his victims for good measure. You can view the full “On The Nose” segment below.
