Former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has finally been dealt his punishment from the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) for two failed drug tests before and after his UFC 200 win over Mark Hunt.

Lesnar will be suspended for one year and will also pay a $250,000 fine in a settlement he reached with the Nevada attorney general’s office. The hulking WWE star tested positive for estrogen blocker Hydroxy-clomiphene twice during his match with Hunt, first in a June 28 out-of-competition test issued by the UFC’s anti-doping partner USADA, and the second directly after his co-main event bout with Hunt at the massive summer card, which he originally won by unanimous decision.

The win will be changed to a no contest, and the fine equals 10 percent of Lesnar’s then-record $2.5 million disclosed purse. The suspension almost definitely means the 39-year-old Lesnar, who had been out of MMA for almost five years when he shocked most by revealing his return in June, is finished fighting in the UFC.

His test failures have incited a monstrous backlash from Hunt, who has been irate in demanding half of Lesnar’s purse due to his belief his health was legitimately at risk. The fan favorite knockout slugger has publicly blasted the UFC for granting Lesnar a special exemption from the normal USADA returning procedure, supposedly turning down two fights and gearing up for a legal battle against his employers.

It remains to be seen what comes to fruition from that bitter battle, but Lesnar has been dealth essentially the same sit that former light heavyweight ruler Jon Jones received, interestingly enough, for testing positive for the same substance before his scheduled UFC 200 match-up with Daniel Cormier that was canceled.

Lesnar was allowed to fight, and he dominated. Was the punishment enough?

Mark Hunt’s journey through the UFC heavyweight ranks started way back in 2010. After leaving the Japanese MMA scene with a losing 5-6 record, ‘The Super Samoan’ decided to try his hand under the Zuffa banner. This was all against the advice of UFC president Dana White, who reportedly offered Hunt a lump sum to drop his dream of fighting for the UFC. The heavy-handed K-1 veteran looked to be on the brink after losing to Sean McCorkle in his UFC debut.

Somehow Hunt managed to turn his career around, and built up a four fight win streak including stunning knockouts over Stefan Struve and Cheick Kongo. A gutsy albeit losing performance against Junior dos Santos at UFC 160 cemented Hunt’s place in the hearts of the fans. After a fight of the year winner against Antonio Silva, the Pride veteran would become the first man to KO Roy Nelson in the UFC.

Hunt vs. Nelson

Walk Away KO

Tough losses to Stipe Miocic and Fabricio Werdum once again threw up talks of retirement for Mark Hunt. As we’d become accustomed to throughout his career, Hunt wasn’t going to give up. He once again built a winning steak, this time with trademark walk-away knockouts over Frank Mir and Bigfoot Silva. Then came arguably his biggest fight to date, as Mark Hunt was booked in to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 200. Ironically this bout would also prove to be his most controversial, not by his own doing though.

After being smothered for three rounds by Lesnar on the already waning UFC 200 main card, Hunt was respectful and humble in defeat. This didn’t last long though, as days later we learned Lesnar had failed a drug test. Following the announcement of Lesnar’s USADA bust, Mark Hunt lost his cool.

Mark Hunt’s last fight?

The events following UFC 200 may confirm Mark Hunt will never fight for the promotion again. It’s far from his last fight though, as ‘The Super Samoan’ now stands against his employers. Furious that not only Lesnar, but also Silva and Mir had all failed drug tests, Hunt unleashed his anger during a series of interviews. Also taking to social media, the former K-1 champ blasted anyone who supported Lesnar, made massive accusations against the UFC and declared he’d be starting a fighters association.

During his most recent post on Facebook and Instagram, Hunt has taken swipes at his fellow fighters. The one-punch knockout artist claims fighters under the UFC banner are scared to speak up.

Clearly still very angry, Mark Hunt also reacted to the news of Jon Jones’ lawsuit…

I think everybody that lost money should sue especially when these cheaters ruin the sport

It’s been three weeks now since the festivities of UFC 200 went down. The promotion set out to put on their greatest show to date, but a number of unexpected occurrences saw the event steadily slide down hill. In terms of overall entertainment UFC 200 could not deliver, at least not to the high standard expected. The event took some big hits during fight week and after, making the memory of the highly anticipated event seem so much more sour. First off it Was Jon Jones who delivered a staggering body blow to UFC 200.

The current interim and former undisputed light-heavyweight champion ‘Bones’ was yanked from the event on Wednesday of the July 9 fight week. The three-day run of live UFC shows hadn’t even got underway yet and already the promotion was dealing with crisis. Failing a USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) test dating back to June 16 meant ‘Bones’ was replaced by Anderson Silva. The troubles of UFC 200 were far from over.

Lesnar body slams the UFC

Returning from five years away, ex-heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar took on one-punch knockout artist Mark Hunt. The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) star turned up at the weigh-in looking in his best condition yet. Physically Lesnar was huge as always, but ripped to shreds too. ‘The Super Samoan’ voiced his suspicions about potential steroid use, but the fight went ahead. Lesnar won a convincing decision, but the worst was yet to come.

Once again the Elliot Ness of the UFC, Jeff Novitsky and his ‘untouchables’ USADA had claimed UFC 200’s biggest remaining star, albeit days after the fight had transpired. Hunt was furious, first calling for all of Brock Lesnar’s record-breaking $2.5 million purse, then taking a stand against the UFC and kick starting a fighters union at the same time.

Hunt’s continued anger

Hunt was beside himself with rage, both regarding Lesnar’s failed test but the overall treatment from the UFC since July 9 and the lack of deterrents for offenders. The mandatory two-year ban was not enough argued ‘The Super Samoan,’ also raising the question of criminal charges if he were injured or worse. After explicitly condemning the promotion and their practice, Hunt also revealed he’d likely never fight for the UFC again.

Well now there’s been more from Hunt on the issue, as per his official Facebook page, as he blasts USADA for stopping by and testing him.

Check it out:

“Don’t fucken waste my time with your bullshit testing ok why are u even testing when u fuckers don’t do shit about it take your out of competition testing and stick it up your ass cheating motherfuckers what a bunch of wankers”

Then, responding to a fan who questioned his status, Hunt continued his rant:

“Shut up idiot u don’t know shit wats the point if testing wen there isn’t really any harsh penalties 2 years ban is bullshit if the guy cheating had killed his oponent would u still think 2 years was a good enough penalty you’re a moron shut your mouth dummy they should lose all the money be banned for life and go criminal court”

“Idiots like (you) don’t understand its jus a matter of time before someone dies and u think your stupid ass would be still talking like that stfu dummy”

Since former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar failed both in and out-of competition drug tests in conjunction with his UFC 200 win over Mark Hunt for an estrogen blocker, “The Super Samoan” has been not surprisingly making a ton of noise about the sticky situation.

The fan favorite knockout artist first called out for half of Lesnar’s $2.5 million purse, then all of it, declared he would attempt to organize a fighter’s union (an increasingly discussed avenue in today’s MMA universe), and finally, topped it all off with a profanity-laced outburst to Ariel Helwani on this week’s edition of The MMA Hour.

News came that the UFC had apparently contacted Hunt and had a ‘positive’ conversation, but it’s tough to think the hatchet was completely buried. And although it’s a more than difficult prospect to organize a fighter’s union in MMA, one prominent figure is willing to support “The Super Samoan” all the way.

Currently fighting in Bellator, former UFC lightweight champion Benson Henderson told MMA Fighting that he is all for Hunt’s efforts, as it’s something that should have been implemented a long time ago:

“I 100 percent support Mark Hunt, everything he’s doing and talking about. I think it’s a long time coming, it should have been here a long time ago.”

BensonDanaPissed

“Smooth” was at the center of negotiations with the UFC when his contract ran out, and he found he was more valued by Bellator. It was big news when Henderson left the UFC, because he’d been one of their most consistent fighters, often willing to fight anyone on short notice to save an event.

With fighter pay and treatment currently at the forefront of MMA discussion, Henderson also cited his support the current antitrust lawsuit being levied at the UFC by former fighters:

“There are a lot of other guys, Cung Le, Jon Fitch, there have been guys who have talked about it for a long time,” Henderson said. “I show my support and solidarity with those guys. As a mixed martial artist, I definitely support them.”

And while it’s been mostly all talk up to this point, Representative Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma – a former MMA fighter himself – has proposed a bill to Congress to introduce the Muhammad Ali Act to MMA as a segway to fair treatment for MMA competitors everywhere. Henderson sees this as a necessary transition for MMA fighters to get what they’re worth, and believes they should have been more intelligent before only now fighting for their rights:

“Boxers are used to it. They know they are supposed to get this and supposed to get that, and what it’s supposed to be like and how it is supposed to be conducted. Us, as mixed martial artists, we’re finally getting like, ‘oh yeah, we should make this much money.’ NFL, they had a lockout so that they could get 51 percent of the total gross revenue. Us fighters, we get, like, seven percent, maybe seven percent of gross revenues. So, us as athletes, we’re not that smart and it took us awhile to get our act together.”

UFC Reportedly Has ‘Positive’ Conversation With Mark Hunt

Heavyweight fan favorite Mark Hunt drew the attention of the entire MMA universe yesterday (Mon., July 25, 2016) when he went off on the UFC in a profanity-laced tirade about Brock Lesnar’s in and out-of competition drug test failures before and after UFC 200.

Dragging his employer’s name through the mud to The MMA Hour host Ariel Helwani, Hunt discussed a myriad of topics like organizing a fighter union, wanting half (and then all) of Lesnar’s record purse, and his considering legal action for the UFC’s willingness to have him fight an opponent who was on performance-enhancing drugs.

It’s easy to understand why “The Super Samoan” was upset, as steroids and PEDs have arguably been the hottest topic in the sport since USADA was enlisted to clean up fighting in 2015. There are obviously legitimate concerns for fighter safety and health with so many fighters now being proved to be on one substance or another, and the the fact that special circumstances were implemented to get Lesnar into the Octagon on short notice after Conor McGregor was pushed off of UFC 200 only make it worse.

Some felt Hunt would be fired for his outburst, but ESPN.com has reported that quite the opposite is the case:

“A UFC official told ESPN.com that Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance Jeff Novitzky had “a lengthy conversation with Hunt” on Monday and that dialogue was “positive.”

According to the official, the conversation was to “address Hunt’s concerns with Lesnar’s potential anti-doping violation, as well as the results management process related to the case.”

In response to Hunt’s concerns regarding the time frame in which the UFC knew of Lesnar’s potential violation, the official adamantly denied any knowledge prior to July 9.”

That’s a bit of a vague description of the conversation and what exact issues were addressed, so even though the UFC denied any and all knowledge of Lesnar’s pending failure form the June 28 test beforehand, that isn’t going to change the fact that USADA needs to find out and inform the UFC of any pertinent results before an event takes place, not after the fact when a fighter was put in danger, pay-per-views were sold, and it just doesn’t matter.

Hunt did not respond to questions surrounding the reported talk with Novitzky, and it’s a difficult scenario to imagine that “The Super Samoan” – who’s fought three opponents found to have been on PEDs in recent years – has cooled down from his epic outburst of only yesterday.

Is there anything the promotion can do to make it right with their popular Australian slugger, or do they simply not care as Hunt suggests?

Popular UFC heavyweight contender Mark Hunt set the MMA community ablaze last night (Monday July 25, 2016). Appearing on ‘The MMA Hour’ to discuss Brock Lesnar’s two failed drug tests, ‘The Super Samoan’ left nothing to the imagination. His UFC 200 opponent and pro wrestling star Lesnar had popped on June 28 and also the date of the event, July 9, with both results being revealed after the fact. When USADA (United States Anti Doping Agency) and the UFC went public with the results, even they couldn’t have foreseen the aftermath.

BrockUFC200Presser3

Furious fighters and fans opined on the controversial subject of both Lesnar and Jon Jones’ failed drug test. Unlike ‘Bones’ who was pulled from the card prior due to his June 16 test fail, Lesnar was able to compete and win against Hunt. This has led to quite an unexpected division among fans, one that really helped fuel the dismayed former K-1 champion’s tirade last night.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the full segment of Mark Hunt exploding during his interview with Ariel Helwani. You might want to keep the volume down if you’re at work.

It’s certainly hard to see such a likeable character so irate and frustrated. It’s also somewhat confusing that a few sects of fans are actually supporting Brock Lesnar and condemning Hunt for his appeals. After facing three fighters who have failed drug tests in his most recent bouts, surely ‘The Super Samoan’ deserves to be backed in his outrage?

Whichever way you look at it, Lesnar’s duo of flunked dope screens are proving to be potentially far more trouble than they were worth. Money talks louder than ever in the MMA world, and still fighter safety appears to be a secondary concern. USADA taking over the drug testing has seen a number of high level busts now, but concerns only seem to grow exponentially with each major scalp claimed.

Hunt vs. Struve

In a land where cheaters prosper (see Lesnar’s record-breaking $2.5 million pay for UFC 200), how many honest employees will be motivated to join Mark Hunt’s fighter union. The seemingly iron-clad rule by the UFC brass may act as a deterrent, but will also lubricate the cogs of further issues surrounding this dynamic and intricate topic.

Mark Hunt’s next fight is against the UFC and Brock Lesnar, at least by the sounds of things, can he win? Perhaps only with the backing of some more heavy hitters from the promotion’s ranks, stay tuned.
