Paul Heyman has always had his finger on the pulse of the MMA world. He remembers watching UFC 1, had a good working relationship with Semaphore Entertainment Group, the original owners of the UFC, and he even created characters (see: Tazz) in his wrestling universe based on fighters.
After leaving World Wrestling Entertainment in 2006, he got together with a group of investors and former K-1/PRIDE producers in attempt to purchase Strikeforce. That deal never materialized because, as Heyman said on Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour, he felt Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker wasn’t getting a fair deal.
“At the end of the day, one of our financial guys, who was the key to the deal, wanted to change the deal, and I wasn’t comfortable with it. One of the producers who I was very close with said, ‘This deal is going to go south and Coker is going to get burned,’ and I wasn’t going to do it, especially coming out of the wrestling world and my first entry into MMA is going to be that I’m a rip-off artist? No thanks. I don’t want to live the rest of my life with that reputation. I already have enough of that as it is. This ain’t a carny play. This is a legitimate business offer and I wasn’t trying to rip anyone off.”

One of the great things about MMA is the persistent and often heated debate, about ‘who is the man’ in each weight division. Of course, this discussion often spirals into the ever popular ‘you can’t be the best if you’re not in the UFC’, which often ends with insults and expletives flying (several staffers here at Fix have wept uncontrollably as a result)
Well, following Fedor Emelianenko’s recent ‘this can’t be happening’ loss to Fabricio Werdum, the fighter’s critics immediately saw this as further evidence that his standing as the world’s best heavyweight, had long been inflated. As a result, there should be no doubt Brock Lesnar is #1 right? Well, according to Antonio Silva (a guy that knows a thing or two about beating large and hihgly skilled people up), the answer is no effen way. Speaking to Tatame magazine, Silva was quoted saying:
“I don’t believe that Brock Lesnar deserves to be considered the number one of the ranking because I think that, if Werdum beat the number one, the right thing would be for him to become the number one. How can you beat the number one and be considered number two? I think this ranking is kind of crazy sometimes… There’s no way of a guy fighting only six times and becoming the number one of the ranking. And what about the history Fedor made in MMA? Just because of one loss, now he’s number three and a guy with only six fights on his professional record is the number one. That’s crazy, man.”
We’ll leave it up to someone else to argue with a man nicknamed “Bigfoot.”

While Chael Sonnen has been capturing headlines over the last few weeks for his ‘okay what now?’ trash talk, it’s easy to forget that there are plenty of other dudes in the UFC, who also possess a remarkable gift for controversial gab. Of course, if you’ve followed Roy Nelson since his arrival in the UFC (or before), you know that you don’t head for another web site when the heavyweight’s talking.
In addition to this Saturday’s tilt between Sonnen and middleweight champ Anderson Silva, the bout between Nelson and Junior dos Santos has a teee-onne riding on the outcome. Dana White has already stated that the winner will get a crack at whoever wins between Brock Lesnar and Cain Velasquez on Oct. 23rd. Well, while speaking to MMA Fighting’s Ben Fowlkes, Nelson made the argument that dos Santos is “probably the No.1 guy out there”, by breaking down Lesnar’s recent win over Shane Carwin.
“Carwin, he seems like he trains for five, one-minute rounds. That’s his championship fight, apparently,” said Nelson. “But no, you learn a lot. Like Carwin, he quits. He basically quit with Brock and he tapped out. That means you quit. It’s pretty self-explanatory. Then Brock, you learned that if you don’t give him an opportunity to come back on you, if you don’t give him that hole to come back, he won’t come back. Shane just gave him the chance to come back. He didn’t put him away.”
Don’t hold back on our account Roy. Nelson also cited Carwin’s recent episode of ‘lactic acidosis,’ as to why he prefers to be “fat”, rather than a muscular monstrosity like Shane. See; being fat does have its perks. To bet on UFC 117 head here.

A source with knowledge of the situation told MMA Fighting that “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” will face Matt Hamill at UFC 121, and UFC President Dana White subsequently confirmed the matchup in a text message.
