Cain Velasquez’s unfortunate history with injuries has been well-documented.

The former UFC heavyweight champion’s latest set back came this past December when he was forced to pull out of a scheduled rematch with Fabricio Werdum after being deemed medically unfit to compete. He then underwent back surgery, but he has since remained quiet on the status of his career.

Recently a report surfaced indicating that Velasquez ‘hardly’ trains MMA anymore, but that was followed by a rumor implying that he could make his return at UFC 211 or UFC 212.

Yesterday (March 13, 2017), Velasquez finally broke the silence, releasing an update on his career via his official Twitter page:

Who would you like to see the ex-champion take on when he returns to the Octagon?

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was scheduled to rematch fellow former champion Fabricio Werdum at next week’s (Dec. 30, 2016) UFC 207 from Las Vegas, Nevada. Questions and rumors began to swirl, however, when Velasquez told ESPN.com that he was dealing with a back injury that would cause him to undergo surgery just days after the fight.

Velasquez, however, confirmed that he was remaining on the card nonetheless, but that no longer seems to be the case. ESPN.com’s Brett Okamoto reported earlier today (Dec. 24, 2016) that the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) has ruled Velasquez out of the fight:

More Injury Woes For Velasquez

Although Velasquez responded by saying he had been cleared to fight, the NSAC released a statement confirming the fact that he had indeed been pulled from the card:

“Based on medical records, interviews and the best judgment of Chairman Anthony Marnell, attorney general J. Brin Gibson, the executive director’s office and our physicians, in an effort to protect the health and safety of the athletes, it’s been determined Cain Velasquez is unfit to fight,” the NSAC said in a statement (Via ESPN.com).

“The financial incentive for fighters to compete is strongly compelling, and it is the responsibility and obligation of this commission to intervene when excessive risks are evident,” the NSAC said. “It’s obvious Mr. Velasquez is physically compromised and competing would place him in significant physical risk.”

Velasquez last competed at July 9’s UFC 200 where he scored an impressive first round stoppage victory over Travis Browne. Prior to that, he hadn’t fought since being submitted by Werdum at June 2015’s UFC 188.

“Vai Cavalo”, on the other hand, is coming off of a decision victory over Browne at last September’s UFC 203.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is gearing up to compete for the first time since surrendering his title to Fabricio Werdum at June 2015’s UFC 188.

Velasquez will take on No. 7-ranked Travis Browne at July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 from Las Vegas in a bout that could very well produce the division’s next title challenger.

After losing his title, Velasquez was scheduled to rematch Werdum last February, but he was forced to withdraw from the contest with yet another injury. Injuries have seemed to be a reoccurring theme for the American Kickboxing Academy product, and one that has earned him his fair share of criticism from fans and media members.

When he shows up to fight, there’s no question that Velasquez is one of the best heavyweights on the planet, but many feel as if he pushes himself too hard in the gym, resulting in constant setbacks.

Browne recently spoke on this topic, saying that Velasquez has a certain type of ‘mentality’ that simply describes who he is as a fighter:

“Cain, whether he’s hurt or not, he’s still one of the most dangerous men in the world. He ran our division for years,” he told FOX Sports.

“The guy, you see it in his fights, he puts it all out there. You have to respect him for that. So, how do you knock him for doing what got him to that spot in the first place? That’s his mentality. That’s him as a fighter, that’s him as a man, you know? How do you demonize that? That’s what got him there.”

In the end, “Hapa” feels as if it was this very style that made Velasquez a star in the first place, making it ‘sad’ that he’s now receiving less than stellar treatment from the fans:

“That’s what made everyone love him as the dominant champ that he is. And now because he is getting injured, people are hating him for it It’s like, what are you guys doing? That’s what got you to love him in the first place.”

“That’s the sad part.”

Do you feel as if Velasquez deserves the criticisms he’s garnered, or are injuries just the nature of the beast which is mixed martial arts?

A few years back, former two-time UFC champion Cain Velasquez was considered by many to be the greatest heavyweight to have ever competed in mixed martial arts; or he was at least heavily in the discussion.

Fast-forward to 2016, however, and Velasquez is no longer the king of the UFC’s heavyweight division.

A plethora of injuries and an upset loss later and Velasquez finds himself at a crossroads, having only competed once since October 2013.

The former champion is set to face off with No. 7-ranked Travis Browne at July 9’s UFC 200 in a bout that if won, could launch Velasquez back into title contention.

His accomplishments inside of the cage can never be looked down upon, and while anything can happen in the insane sport called MMA, let’s take a look at five reasons why Velasquez will never maintain UFC gold again.

After Successful Surgery, Cain Velasquez Hopes To Return To Training Next Month

After surrendering his title in brutal fashion last June to Fabricio Werdum, oft-injured former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez was scheduled to rematch “Vai Cavalo” at the upcoming February 6th event from Las Vegas, Nevada.

However, in what seems to be a common trend now a days, the Mexican-American was forced out of the bout with a back injury. Werdum would withdraw soon after, and the fight was scrapped completely.

Velasquez’s injury required him to undergo yet another surgery, and he has done just that. Recently taking to his official Facebook page, the former champion claimed that his surgery was a “complete success”, and said that he hopes to return to full training next month:

“I wanted to update you all on how my injury has been progressing.

First off, I want to thank you all for your amazing support. Your messages and your support have really helped me and my family through a tough time.

I had orthoscopic surgery on Monday morning to remove some bone spurs that were pinching my sciatic nerve. The surgery was a complete success and I can’t tell you how well I’m feeling already.

My doctors have recommended I take it easy for now but can begin light training in about two weeks. They also think I’ll be able to train at 100% in about four to five weeks. I’ll follow their orders but I can’t wait to get back in there.

I’ll keep updating everyone right here and on Twitter.

Thanks again,

Cain”

While Velasquez undoubtedly wants the opportunity to regain his title, it’s currently unclear what the UFC plans to do with the cloudy heavyweight title picture.

After Velasquez pulled out of the bout with Werdum, top contender Stipe Miocic quickly stepped in to take on the champion before “Vai Cavalo” pulled out himself. With that being said, Miocic could very well be next in line for a title shot.

No. 5-ranked Ben Rothwell also just picked up his fourth straight stoppage victory over Josh Barnett, and he too is knocking on the doors of a shot at gold.

What should be next for Velasquez upon his return?

UFC 196 took a big hit last night when it was revealed that former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez got injured. Read his reaction to the situation here…

For fans of the Fabricio Werdum vs. Cain Velasquez rematch at UFC 196, last night was not a pleasant one. The ex-champion ‘CV’ was injured yet again, this time it’s his back that prevents him from competing in his sixth UFC title fight. It’s also the second time he’s had to pull out of a fight against ‘Vai Cavalo,’ having dropped out of the UFC 180 main event in late 2014, similarly on two weeks notice.

This is nothing new to Velasuqez unfortunately, as he’s fought only six times in as many years, having undergone major surgery for a shoulder injury after his UFC 166 win over Junior dos Santos. The heavyweight division is once again flailing, and along with Ronda Rousey’s media coverage in the last two days, it’s starting to feel like 2014 all over again.

Clearly disappointed, Velasquez spoke to his fans on Facebook to give a statement to Fabricio Werdum. Check it out:

“Training camp has been difficult for the last few weeks, but sometimes no matter how much the heart and mind want to fight through an injury, healing has its own timeline. We thought we’d get through it, but we had to face the truth that it wasn’t going to be OK in time to fight,” Velasquez writes. “All of us fighters have all fought injured at one time or another, but I can’t ignore this injury, as my doctor has indicated that not addressing the problems with my sciatic nerve could have longer-term consequences.

“Fabricio, I hope that you accept my sincere apology. I understand how you may think this is an excuse. From one professional to another, I can tell you I was committed and looking forward to competing with you again. I greatly respect you as a fighter and man, and we will meet soon.”

So the rematch of the title fight that left so many unanswered questions at UFC 188 will have to wait a little longer. After coming in to their first fight highly unprepared for the altitude in Mexico, Velasquez clearly wants to be at his best for the second fight, but will he walk straight back to a title shot from this latest injury?

Stay tuned.
