Dana White and the UFC were in a generous mood tonight, as they have given every fighter that finished their opponent a bonus at UFC Austin.

There was a total of 8 finishes by KO/TKO on the entire card, tying the previous record for most KO’s or TKO’s in a card. The card will go down as one of the best Fight Nights in recent history, as there was something to get excited about with every fight. The card started off with fireworks, foreshadowing what was to come for the next few hours. Roman Dolidze got the party started with a huge KO over Kyle Daukaus, who as a bit of a heavy favorite in the bout.

That was just the start, as there were some more mind blowing knockouts, as Ricardo Ramos had one of the most beautiful spinning elbow KO’s ever. Ramos caught Danny Chavez early in the first round of the fight. He fainted a body shot with the left, and spun and hit him with the elbow.

The fighters going home with the Bonus include:

  • Roman Dolidze
  • Phil Hawes
  • Cody Stamann
  • Ricardo Ramos
  • Jeremiah Wells
  • Adrian Yanez
  • Gregory Rodrigues
  • Joaquin Buckley
  • Kevin Holland (Sub)

Dana White had also given a bonus to Josh Emmett and Calvin Kattar for their ‘Fight of the Night’ bout

Kattar and Emmett went toe to toe for five grueling rounds, in a razor close fight that saw Emmett get his hand raised. Both Kattar and Emmett had some great moments in the fight, but it seems as if the judges had given the fight to Emmett, due to the power he was hitting Kattar with. He threw every punch with intention of ending the fight, as Kattar was fighting more technically according to the judges scorecards. One could argue that the decision could have gone either way, depending on how it was judged.

Edging his fifth consecutive victory as part of an eye-catching winning spree, UFC featherweight contender, Josh Emmett rounds out tonight’s UFC Austin card with a close, split decision (48-47, 47-48, 48-47) win against the #4 ranked, Calvin Kattar at the Moody Center.

Entering tonight’s event — which came as his second in a headlining bout for the organization, Josh Emmett had managed to land another close victory over common-foe, Dan Ige at UFC 269 back in December of last year.

Sharing a tentative opening round tonight, however, Emmett was forced to deal with a cut just to the left of the same side eye courtesy of a consistent jab from Kattar in the opening round — with the laceration increasing in size off the back of a spinning elbow from the Massachusetts native.

Despite a bright start from Sacramento native, Emmett in both the first, second, and third rounds — Kattar managed to rally well in the fourth and fifth, landing both frames, arguably, however, it proved too little, too late for the slick New England Cartel mainstay, who suffers his fourth Octagon loss in a hugely close back-and-forth.

Below, catch the highlights from Josh Emmett’s nail-biting split decision win over Calvin Kattar

Taking main event honors in ‘The Lone Star State’ — a featherweight pairing between division contenders, Calvin Kattar, and Josh Emmett.

Attempting to land his second straight victory since a one-sided ‘Fight Island’ loss to former champion, Max Holloway, Kattar returned to the Octagon in January with a brutally one-sided win of his own against Giga Chikadze.

As for Emmett, the surging knockout ace scored his fourth consecutive victory back in December at UFC 269, battling over the course of three back-and-forth rounds to defeat common-foe, Dan Ige.

A lightweight pairing between Donald Cerrone and Joe Lauzon was scheduled to take co-headlining honors at the event, however, the bout has since been cancelled by the organization after Lauzon suffered a leg injury ahead of tonight’s return to Austin.

It was nearly a clean sweep on the scales for all the fighters making the walk at UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs Emmett.

Bantamweight Tony Kelley was the only fighter to miss weight from the 14-fight card, weighing in 1.5lbs over the limit. As per the UFC, his bout with Adrian Yanez will still go ahead, and Kelly will forfeit 20% of his purse.

Tony Kelley Misses Bantamweight Limit

Despite the drama at bantamweight, every competitor made weight, including headliners Calvin Kattar and Josh Emmet, who battle it out in a featherweight contest, which may have huge implications in the title picture.

Calvin Kattar vs. Josh Emmet

Calvin Kattar bounced back in fanatic fashion, defeating Giga Chikadze in his most recent bout after taking a year out. Prior to the victory, Kattar was at the wrong end of a one-sided beatdown to Max Holloway. A statement win over an in-form Emmet could push Kattar back inside the title challenger conversations.

After suffering a second career loss to Jeremy Stephens, Emmet has turned a corner winning his last four inside the UFC Octagon. At 37 years old, his main event clash vs Kattar will more than likely be his last opportunity to clinch on to featherweight title aspirations. Emmet recently bagged decisions over Dan Ige and Shane Burgos and will be hopeful of adding Calvin Kattar to that noteworthy list.

Calvin Kattar is still hunting for his first shot at UFC gold, but the #4-ranked featherweight already knows exactly what current champion he’d like to emulate.

Speaking at the UFC on ESPN 37 media day prior to his main event bout with Josh Emmett, Kattar discussed the upcoming title fight between Alexander Volkanovski and former opponent Max Holloway.

The 34-year-old was dismissive when asked if a Volkanovski win would be better for his own title aspirations, but he took the opportunity to compliment both fighters.

“I’m excited for [Volkanovski vs. Holloway 3],” Kattar answered when asked about the fight. “I like both guys, watching both guys fight. I’ve got a lot of respect for both, they want guys that earn opportunities and compete. Like after that fight with Max, I felt like he might have been next up in line for a title fight anyway, and he still chose to stay busy and fight Yair. So, props to him.

“Then Alex fighting him a third time just to put an end to that chapter, you’ve gotta respect that. He’s a busy fighter, you know? I think he resembles what a champion should act like at that point. Not just picking and choosing but wanting the best fights. I think we’re all in for a good one in July.”

Volkanovski claimed the featherweight championship from Holloway at UFC 245 in 2019. The Australian earned a split-decision in their rematch the following year and has since defended his belt twice more against Brian Ortega and Chan Sung Jung.

The scheduled third fight with Holloway will be the first time Volkanovski has defended his title twice in a calendar year. While that may seem relatively inactive compared to fighters on their way up, Kattar appreciates that Volkanovski has been one of the UFC’s busier champions during his title reign.

“I would say if I had the option, it’d be good to have a busy champ. Like I said, I think [Volkanovski] definitely acts the way a champ should act. And I would have that same mindset, where I would wanna fight the guys that are earning their opportunities, not the ones that are kind of waiting for guys to fight and see how it settles…I don’t know, people get too cute with it. I think he just wants guys that are earning their next opportunity, and that’s the way I wanna get my opportunity. By earning them, staying busy, competing and taking on the best guys to get there.”

“The Boston Finisher” was a on a two-fight win streak before losing a unanimous decision to former champion Holloway in 2021. He rebounded with a dominant performance against Giga Chikadze earlier this year and will face Josh Emmett in a potential featherweight title eliminator at UFC on ESPN 37.

What do you think of Kattar’s thoughts on how Volkanovski has conducted himself as UFC champion?
