Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit returns to action this weekend. Headlining the August 27 UFC on FOX 21 main event against Demian Maia, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ will hope to get back on track. Following a disappointing split decision loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, Condit had briefly considered retirement. Now re-energised after nine months off, Condit’s hopes for another title run lay past a very dangerous fight.

‘Dangerous’ Demian Maia

Maia’s recent form at welterweight has been excellent. Recently submitting Matt Brown at UFC 198, the Brazilian is currently unbeaten in five. Losing his last fight and taking some time off has lead to many picking against Condit in Vancouver. ‘NBK’ recently promised blood and violence in his UFC return, but Maia is great at smothering exciting fighters.

Despite all these factors, here’s five reasons Carlos Condit will smash Demian Maia…

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit is on the brink of a long-awaited return to the octagon. After briefly pondering retirement following a narrow loss to Robbie Lawler in January, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ will face Demian Maia in the main event of UFC on FOX 21. Fans of Condit have just 14 days to wait until August 27, where the Greg Jackson’s product has promised ‘blood and violence’ against the highly respected Brazilian Jujitsu ace.

Condit was right on track to head in to another title fight against Tyron Woodley at UFC 171, until an injury TKO loss set him back. ‘The Chosen One’ would go on to knock out Lawler to claim the belt at UFC 201, making ‘NBK’s’ tilt with Maia mean so much more.

When you mention the welterweight division as it currently stands, you can’t help but talk about Woodley’s ‘money fights.’ The newly minted champ called out Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz after defeating ‘Ruthless,’ neither of whom are ranked at the moment. This has caused heated debates among fellow fighters and fan, and Wonderboy’s Dad, but it’s something Condit is not angry about.

‘Money Fights’

“Is it fair? No, but it’s not Tyron Woodley’s job to be fair to us. The only people that he owes are himself, his coaches and his family. I feel like he’s calling for these big money fights because this is a dangerous sport. You never know when you’re going to be done, so I don’t blame him, honestly.”

2016-The Year of New Champions

“This is a dangerous sport. I think Dominick Cruz has a hold on his division, Mighty Mouse, as you mentioned, but even those guys could get knocked out any night. It’s maybe less likely, but this is a crazy sport. There are so many variables, even a champion can have a bad night.”

Drug Testing

“I think that it’s great USADA is testing rigorously and catching people. I think that a two-year ban for a first time offence, that’s a heavy ban. Two years right off the bat is probably heavy-handed enough. I think for a second offence for performance enhancing drugs, I would go for a lifetime ban. This is a dangerous sport, I think if someone is pharmaceutical enhanced and looking for an edge on their opponent, in what could be a life and death struggle, that’s serious sh*t.”

Former UFC interim welterweight champion and UFC on FOX 21 main event star Carlos Condit has been quite vocal lately. ‘The Natural Born Killer’ talked about a possible retirement in the near future, made an incredibly accurate prediction of the UFC 201 main event and also gave a promise of blood and violence against Demian Maia on August 27. After sitting quietly on the sidelines since his narrow loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, it’s refreshing to see Condit in the limelight again.

But it’s not all roses and walks on the beach in the life of a fighter. The reality is that no matter how much you enjoy to fight, the amount of responsibility and inherent dangers that come with the sport are staggering. Even for a guy like ‘NBK,’ who openly admits his passion for the fight, issues like the Reebok deal are hard to swallow.

Carlos-Condit[1]
Carlos Condit might love to fight, but he needs to live too…

The UFC’s partnership with sports apparel giants Reebok has been highly debated for so many reasons. Firstly, it seemed Reebok was unable to manufacture UFC gear without making ridiculous, racist, offensive and just obvious mistakes regarding fighter names, nationalities, styles and other easy-to-find details. This could probably have been looked on in a slightly different light had the athletes been receiving fair compensation from the deal, which they are not.

Condit joins the ranks of many other fighters right now who have growing concerns about their own sacrifice in regards to what they are paid in return, specifically from the Reebok deal.

As quoted by MMAMania.com:

“I wish that a dude like Cyborg, or any of these fighters who are putting their bodies through this and putting their health and well-being on the line, I just wish we had a little bit more security. This is his trade, he’s a fighter and this is how he makes money. Now he can’t make any money. Now what the hell is he going to do? That’s kind of how it is with all of us, so, that is the nature of the sport. Any of us can get hurt, get our faces broken. We accept that risk, but, we kind of don’t have anything to fall back on. And I was like, ‘damn, he may never fight again.’”

~Condit agrees with Mark Hunt’s fighter union~

“Something needs to be done. A big part of the Reebok deal, man, our loss in sponsors took away our security. Now we are beholden to living fight to fight and we don’t have that buffer in between in regards to financial security that sponsors gave us. So, we are in a weird place, man.”

Carlos Condit: Natural Born Killer In The Modern Colosseum

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit has not competed since his January loss to Robbie Lawler, a fight that many believe ‘The Natural Born Killer’ deserved to win. Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit has not competed since his January loss to Robbie Lawler, a fight that many believe ‘The Natural Born Killer’ deserved to win. Fans had wondered whether Condit would come back after such a hard-to-swallow loss, and it wasn’t until earlier this month that we learned the 30-9 ‘NBK’ would once again cross that line in to the UFC octagon. Demian Maia is the intended target, and the main event of the August 27 UFC on FOX 21 will play host.

What Carlos Condit brings to the fight game is a quality that 99% of other fighters do not use as primary motivation. Most of the sport’s biggest stars are arguably more athlete than pure fighter, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ does not fall in to that category. Of course it goes without saying that his cardio and conditioning is perhaps the best among the current crop at welterweight, but his overwhelming drive to be part of a bloody war is what makes the Jackson’s MMA product so unique and great to watch.

As the modern age of MMA beckons, and Reebok clad contenders help usher the sport in to the mainstream, true gladiators like Condit and Lawler are becoming few and far between. Condit’s trail of destruction in the sport can be traced back to Hawaii, Japan, Mexico, the United States, Brazil, England and Canada. For nearly 14 years now ‘The Natural Born Killer’ has slain foes with a reckless abandon, showing the merciless intent to destroy akin to bare knuckle boxing champions of the pre-Queensbury rules turn of the 20th century.

Condit’s willingness to leave the claret stains of his battle wounds in the lining of his armour brings a rare feeling of gladiatorial combat to his fights, a sense of ornery fuelled technique that brings out the antediluvian blood thirst of a time long passed.

In celebration of Condit’s long-awaited return to UFC competition, we’ve lined up a few of his greatest performances to review and relive during the course of this article. First up let’s check out Condit’s brutal knockout victory over Tatsunor Tanaka at Pancrase: Blow 9.
That was back in 2006 when Condit already sported an 18-4 professional MMA tally. His first real career-defining moment came two fights later, as ‘The Natural Born Killer’ faced John Alessio in the now-defunct World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. After successfully debuting for the organization with a submission win over Kyle Jenson, Condit faced the experienced veteran Alessio who was coming off a submission victory of his own against Brian Gassaway.

Here’s what happened at WEC 26.

Battering and submitting Alessio won Condit the vacant WEC welterweight championship. He would go on to defend the title three times before crossing over to the UFC, where Martin Kampmann won an extremely questionable decision over ‘NBK.’ Now it was time for Condit to unleash his wrath upon the 170-pound division. Five straight victories including three very impressive knockouts led ‘The Natural Born Killer’ to the interim title belt. He’ won it against Nick Diaz at UFC 143, and was set to face Georges St-Pierre to unify the titles at UFC 154.

Although he lost the decision against ‘GSP,’ Condit walked away with no loss to his ever-growing stock. He’d put on a great show, and nearly had the undisputed welterweight GOAT finished following some elite striking combinations. Another close decision against Johny Hendricks would see ‘Bigg Rigg’ get the judges nod, and it was time to settle an old score. Condit bludgeoned Martin Kampmann before suffering a career threatening injury against Tyron Woodley.

Carlos-Condit[1]

A torn ACL and partially torn meniscus would see Carlos Condit out of action for more than a year following surgery. ‘The Chosen One’ would later receive a title shot against Robbie Lawler that’s set for UFC 201, but it was ‘NBK’ who would get first dibs on Lawler. After a successful comeback fight against Thiago Alves, Condit would get another crack at UFC gold in the form of the UFC 195 main event on January 2, 2016.

A gruelling five round war typical of both Condit and Lawler was the result, as the first pay-per-view card of 2016 delivered a quality argument for ‘fight of the year’ honours. It was yet another enervating battle to add to the expanding list, but had we seen the last of Carlos Condit in UFC competition? Of course not.

With the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace Demian Maia next on the list, Carlos Condit’s return is a challenging one. One of mixed martial art’s most revered warriors will place blood and guts on the line for glory, in a manner we’ve become accustomed to through countless inspiring performances.

Here’s a video highlight from Facebook that pretty much sums up what you can expect from Carlos Condit’s return this coming August 27.

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit has a reputation for being an incredibly durable, exciting, high level athlete. Fighting out of Greg Jackson’s Albuquerque training facility in New mexico, the aptly named ‘Natural Born Killer’ has an immense cardio vascular capacity and mixes a unique style of striking and footwork as his primary offensive game.

After his UFC 143 interim title tilt against Nick Diaz, there was some criticism from viewers who later blasted ‘NBK’ as a ‘point fighter.’ To put things in perspective, Condit has 30 professional mixed martial arts wins, only two of which come by decision. From his 12 UFC bouts the former WEC welterweight champion has won seven ‘fight night’ bonuses, his promotional record stands at 8-4.

Condit has been out of action for six months now. He last fought in a gruelling five round affair against the champ Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, in a bout that was scored a split decision win for ‘Ruthless.’ Many fans and media members disputed the narrow decision, feeling Condit had landed enough volume to earn the victory and the championship belt, and for a while there was the possibility of an immediate rematch.

Lawler, who’s also not fought since their classic burner in January, has now been paired with Tyron Woodley for UFC 201 on July 30. Speculation on Condit’s possible retirement has swirled since that fight with ‘Ruthless’ and the former interim boss has remained pretty quiet lately.

Until today that is, as Carlos Condit gives a hint at his possible final fight for the UFC. It would certainly be a joy to see ‘The Natural Born Killer’ fight again, and fans are rallying for a rematch with Nick Diaz since the following video was released.
