Former interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit will return at UFC 202, taking on Demian Maia.

Condit (30-9) is coming off a split decision loss to Robbie Lawler this past January for the welterweight title. He is 2-4 over his last six, with three of the four defeats being decision setbacks. The other was a TKO loss to current title contender Tyron Woodly after “The Natural Born Killer” suffered a knee injury.

Maia (23-6) has won five in a row, including a May submission win over Matt Brown. He previously competed for the UFC middleweight title before moving to welterweight.

UFC 202 takes place August 20 from Las Vegas and features Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor.

UFC 202 just got a whole lot crazier.

The UFC has officially announced via Twitter that a huge welterweight contest between No. 3-ranked Demian Maia and No. 5-ranked Carlos Condit is set to go down at UFC 202 in August.

The bout will join a rapidly-growing card that features Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz in the main event, in addition to the recently added Anthony Johnson vs. Glover Teixeira and Donald Cerrone vs. Rick Story bouts:

Maia (23-6) is on an impressive five-fight win streak with his most recent victory coming at UFC 198 this past May against Matt Brown, where the Brazilian submitted Brown via rear-naked choke in the third round of their contest.

The Brazilian jiu-jitsu stud has been campaigning for a title opportunity for quite some time now, and he might just get his wish with a win over Condit.

Condit (30-9) comes off of arguably one of the greatest title fights of all time, against current champ Robbie Lawler at UFC 195 in January. The two men pushed each other to the very edge in the bloody five round war, that ultimately saw Lawler retaining his title via split decision.

Much buzz has circulated throughout the MMA media, calling for a rematch between to two elite 170-pounders. A win over a surging Maia may just put ‘The Natural Born Killer’ back in the title hunt.

UFC 202 takes place live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on August 20, 2016.

Anything can, and often does, happen in the sport of mixed martial arts.

One of the traits that makes MMA the most exciting sport in the world is the utter unpredictability of the action. With almost anything allowed – punches, kicks, elbows, knees, takedowns, slams, ground and pound, and submissions all in play – trying to foresee exactly how a fight will go is often a fool’s errand.

As such, miraculous comebacks are always a possibility, and happen with much more regularity than in other major sports. Victory is often just one well-placed punch, kick, or takedown away. Because a finish negates any scoring that happened prior, athletes in the Octagon are able to mount sudden and stunning turnarounds, even if they had been on the wrong side of a beating.

Still, there are those that stand above the rest. The latest list from LowKick MMA seeks to pick out the best of the best comebacks in UFC history. And by comeback, we mean within the context of a single fight. A comeback like Dominick Cruz returning from years on the shelf to smoke Takeya Mizugaki will not be considered here. Cruz was never losing that bout. What will be taken into account is how badly the fighter was hurt before snatching the victory and the stakes involved in the contest.

Whether eating a devastating strike and overcoming it, or getting consistently outfought and snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, comebacks come in many forms. In the following examples, we take a look at five times that a single left hook has not only changed the trajectory of a fight, but rather shifted the momentum of an entire career. The selections are specific to UFC bouts, each with a unique storyline line that followed the fight ending blow.

It’s time to fire up the UFC Fight Pass subscription and see who made the list, because these knockouts are must-see for any fight fan.

The fights selected span over the entirety of the UFC’s 23 year history and range from title fights to normal bouts. The placement of each bout on the list is dependent on the magnitude of the knock out from an in-fight perspective, and how it affected the careers of the fighters involved following the bout.

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos “The Natural Born Killer” Condit hasn’t competed since he dropped a highly-controversial decision loss to champion Robbie Lawler in the main event of last January’s UFC 195.

The fight was a fantastic back-and-forth five round war, although many had felt that Condit had done enough to get the job done, as did he and his team.

In the aftermath of the bout, the 32-year-old “Natural Born Killer” admitted that he was contemplating retirement, and he has since to make up his mind on his fighting future.

Yesterday (June 15, 2016), however, Condit posted a video on his Instagram of him smashing the pads with the caption “One more”, leading many to believe that he was teasing a return. He then appeared on The Luke Thomas Show to explain that although fans may have looked too far into his post, he was indeed ‘leaning towards’ a return:

“It was actually, I had done a post right before I posted that one so it was like, ‘okay, one more post.’ So yeah, I guess you guys are looking deeper into that than was really there…As far as whether I’m gonna do another fight or not I feel like it’s up in the air. I’m leaning towards yes, possibly but it has to be something that really piques my attention.”

As far as what fights would pique his interest, obviously a rematch with Lawler is at the top of his list. Condit also admitted, however, that he’d be open to a rematch with Nick Diaz, whose suspension will be up later this summer.

Condit and Diaz squared off for the interim 170-pound strap a few years back in an exciting and close contest that “The Natural Born Killer” would apparently be willing to add a second chapter to:

“Really, honestly a rematch with Lawler without a doubt. Possibly a rematch with [Nick] Diaz. Two scenarios that I can think of that would interest me.”

Typically, fighters start to derail when their passion for the fight game is lost. That isn’t the case for Condit, however, as his passion and fire still remains. The reluctance to return is simply based off of his long term health:

“It’s not that I don’t want to keep going. I still love fighting. I still have a passion for it; I still have a lot of fire. The question is whether it’s the smartest thing for me to keep going. I’ve fought professionally – it’ll be 14 years now in the fall I guess and that’s a lot of wear and tear, that’s a lot of wars in the cage, in the ring, and in the gym. I’ve just got to start thinking about the future. I’m still undecided as far as what that entails but I’ve got to be smart for the long term.

“I think it’s common knowledge that getting punched in the head repeatedly for over a decade is probably not a good thing, probably not good for your health.”

In closing, Condit said that a return wouldn’t take place until likely next year if he indeed decides to strap up his gloves again. The former title-holder did claim, however, that he’d be ready to step in for either Lawler or Tyron Woodley if either man is forced out of their title bout next month:

“I don’t think it would be until next year. I’ve got some stuff going on between now, and the end of the year, that I probably won’t have time to be in a training camp. Early next year possibly, but I’m in shape. If Tyron Woodley or Robbie Lawler get hurt, I’m ready to jump in there and fight for the title again if need be. But as far as a scheduled fight it wouldn’t be until next year.”
