Despite an impending sentence on March 28th for pleading guilty to Federal Money Laundering, it looks like Chael Sonnen will be facing Yoshihiro Akiyama on March 18th at UFC 128. The prospective fight may pose more concern than the rumored 20 years and half million dollar fine, Sonnen was expected to face, as it has been reported that Sonnen took a deal of a $10,000 fine and 2 years probation in exchange for his guilty plea.

Chael Sonnen seems to be above the law at this point. Should we all be despising him by now? I might be a little… but I take in solace the knowledge that he has (and I’ll borrow the term from the poker world) small ball(s) and that his real estate license has now been revoked, and that his political career is in the toilet. Let’s hope Sexyama can throw him one final blow and quiet the smooth talker, at least for the rest of the year, as the MMA world may have had its fill of this shameless self-promoting salesman.

*UPDATE: MMAWeekly is reporting that Dana White is putting Chael Sonnen on suspension for the time being and the Akiyama fight is off. Ah…some retribution after all…

Dana’s TUF 13 Top 3 Coaching Match-Ups

Dana White spoke with MMAFighting.com and says he’s got 3 ideas in mind for TUF 13 Coach pairings. The most obvious choice is Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen. The rumors online have spread like wild-fire that these two guys will be the next coaches to go head-to-head on The Ultimate Fighter show to culminate in an anticipated Main Event bout where the two outspoken fighters could let their fists do the talking (so to speak). Sonnen’s suspension doled out by CSAC was cut in half on December 2nd after he faced the board in a hearing. His suspension will be lifted on March 2nd, which renders him conveniently available to do the show.

Another appealing coaching match-up, is Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber. Faber successfully returned to the Bantamweight division and these two facing each other in the cage is inevitable, so why not make a tv show of it? Torres is expected to fight February 5th in UFC 126, but as we’ve seen recently with White pulling Jon Fitch out of his match-up against Jake Ellenberger to now headline UFC 127 along with BJ Penn, if White wants Torres and Faber, White will make it happen.

Finally, White tossed out the idea of Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir who could meet for a rubber match following the show. However, it seems crowd excitement has waned on that idea and with Lesnar taking a hiatus out in the woods somewhere, it may not be a real choice for White…perhaps just a pitch he’s tossing out to throw us off the scent. We know how UFC loves to surprise us with their coaches.

UFC Middleweight, Chael Sonnen who popped positive for PEDs after his UFC 117 titleshot against Middleweight Champion, Anderson Silva told HDNet’s Mike Straka, he will not offer an explanation or apology for properly disclosing to the CSAC Commissioner that his urine would indeed test positive for high testosterone levels due to his medication consumed for testosterone replacement therapy to aid his medical condition known as hypogonadism. Sonnen maintains he did not take a steroid and likens calling his medication a “steroid” to calling mouthwash and cough syrup “alcohol”. Chael Sonnen went before the CSAC commission to appeal his 1 year suspension on December 2nd and received a reduced suspension of 6 months. Sonnen’s suspension will be over on March 2, 2011.
