Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva were the coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 3 Brazil and in the lead up the two did not have a rivalry but that certainly wasn’t the case at the end of the season.

Sonnen’s biggest rival was Anderson Silva, but after he went 0-2 to the legend he squashed the beef. Yet, Wanderlei Silva wasn’t happy with what “The American Gangster” said about Brazil and demanded an apology or he would not film TUF.

“That was a mess,” Sonnen told Burt Watson on MMA Junkie’s “Legend 2 Legend” series. “So, my heat was with Anderson Silva. Anderson would be right to be disgusted with me. I invoked his wife, his entire country, his people. There was spreading that hot sauce, as you put it, all around. But somehow Wanderlei tried to insert himself in the conversation. I’m not clear to this day how Wanderlei became a part of Anderson and I’s beef.”

Throughout the season, it was clear Wanderlei Silva was not a fan of Chael Sonnen and his antics. It got intense and they brawled but Sonnen reveals Silva demanded an apology from him for everything he said to Anderson and about Brazil.

“We get out to ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ and this story is already written, we don’t need a script, I get it, he gets it,” Sonnen explained. “He gets to wear the white hat, I’ve got to wear the black hat. I’m the guy that insulted his whole country, and now I’m in the country, it’s not going to be great for me, but he gets to be the big hero. So, on the very first day, for reasons unknown, he stands up before we start filming.

“Wanderlei stands up and goes ‘Before we go any further, unless you apologize, I’m leaving.’ Well, you’re going have to leave, man, because that’s not part of the skit. I do not give apologies, it’s part of being the bad guy. I can’t really come off-brand to make you feel better in a room of empty people when I’m trying to entertain the masses at a later date on television, that just doesn’t happen. So, he left. That was the sucker’s move that he made – he didn’t give himself any other way out.”

Chael Sonnen dominates Wanderlei Silva in a heated fight that took place under the Bellator MMA banner a few years ago. The Viacom-owned promotion released this free fight on their official YouTube channel to promote Sonnen’s next fight.

The former UFC title contender and MMA Legend had their long-coming showdown in a light heavyweight bout in the main event of Bellator NYC in June 2017 in New York City at the most famous arena in the world, Madison Square Garden.

This was a fight that was in the making for years. The two fighters had to wait to finally fight in Bellator cage. There were questions coming into their fight regarding how both of the fighters would do against each other.

If you recall, their rivalry dates back to their days under the UFC banner. It all started when Silva confronted Sonnen in a van on the way to a public appearance and at an MMA expo.

Although it was heated, they managed to avoid a physical confrontation. This led to them coaching “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3,” where they came to blows as opposing coaches.

Chael Sonnen Dominates To Victory

The judges gave Sonnen the unanimous decision win after he put on a dominating performance with takedowns and his signature ground and pound. You can watch the full fight here:

Sonnen is set to face Lyoto Machida in a light heavyweight contest at the Bellator 222 show. This event takes place on June 14 at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

One of the greatest MMA rivalries of all-time that never led to a fight…

To say Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen have a history would be a massive understatement. Sharing an intense rivalry that started during the run-up to Sonnen’s first fight with Anderson Silva, the two were booked in to coach The Ultimate Fighter Brazil 3. ‘The Axe Murderer’ was offended by Sonnen’s comments about Brazilians, and the two had faced off many times before they coached on TUF. Approaching the highly anticipated climax in 2013, the two brawled in a memorable scene on the Ultimate Fighter set.

Moving from UFC 173, to the TUF Brazil 3 final, and finally to UFC 175, the bout between Wandy and ‘The American Gangster’ would never materialize. Instead their beef was dispersed following a string of failed drug tests by Sonnen, and a controversial avoided dope screen in the case of Silva. Sonnen would receive a two-year ban by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, but Silva would get hit with a lifetime ban by the NAC. Finally in 2016, both men would be free to fight again. ‘The Axe Murderer’ had his lifetime ban overturned and was released from his UFC contract.

Paths Will Cross

Signing with Rizin Fighting Federation, Wanderlei Silva will look to settle an old feud with Mirko Cro Cop in December. Close partners with Rizin and also keen acquirers of UFC legends, Bellator MMA got their hands on Chael Sonnen. The gangster from Oregon will take on Tito Ortiz in January of next year, and here’s where the plot thickens. Bellator CEO Scott Coker says Wandy is still furious at Sonnen, and the two will finally meet in the cage next year! Via MMAMania:

“Since Bellator contracted Chael Sonnen, believe me, we’ve been getting texts and calls from Wanderlei saying that he wants that fight. So, I think you’ll see that fight some time in 2017 for Bellator. Wanderlei is still pissed about what happened between them and he wants that fight. It’s something personal for him. Honestly, I don’t really know what happened to make him that compelled to fight Chael, but I can tell you that he is not happy with what happened between them.”

“That’s going to be a fight where everybody stops whatever they’re doing to turn on the TV to see the fight. As we all know, that fight has been building for a number of years and they couldn’t work it out, but now I feel the timing is perfect.”

The Saga Continues

Many memories and classic moments already exist between Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva. Unfortunately for Bellator, due to Zuffa copyright they won’t be able to use any of those confrontations to hype the fight. The saga will come to ahead in 2017, as Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen’s paths will cross after six years of waiting.

Go Bellator!

Wanderlei Silva Sends Violent Threats To Chael Sonnen

Former Pride FC champion and UFC veteran Wanderlei Silva is back where his illustrious career first really gained steam. Signed with the budding Rizin FF promotion, ran by the former owner of Pride, ‘The Axe Murderer’ awaits his return to mixed martial arts action after an absence of more than three years. His final fight for the UFC was a thrilling knockout win over Brian Stann, after a back-and-forth battle that took place at the UFC Saitama event in 2013.

Since that time Silva came very close to fighting his rival Chael Sonnen, and on the season of The Ultimate Fighter they coached opposite each other, a famous brawl did actually break out. That moment would go down as one of the greatest TUF scenes of all time, but the bout would never come to fruition.

Sonnen Wand

The beef that had brewed for so long, with multiple confrontations and even the fight on the reality TV show, eventually unravelled in front of our eyes. First off ‘The Axe Murderer’ avoided the Nevada Athletic Commission dope testers, landing himself a lifetime ban from competing, further complicated by the fact the UFC was very unhappy with him. Silva even claimed he knew of ‘fixed fights’ under the Zuffa banner.

After a lengthy legal battle with the NSAC and the UFC, Silva was forced to publicly apologize for his comments about Zuffa, and was later freed from his contract, once again able to fight without the constraints of his former employers.

But the feud with Sonnen is far from over, and Silva has heard what ‘The American Gangster’ said about him recently.

In typical Wanderlei Silva fashion, he’s gone completely berserk over the issue.

Dana’s TUF 13 Top 3 Coaching Match-Ups

Dana White spoke with MMAFighting.com and says he’s got 3 ideas in mind for TUF 13 Coach pairings. The most obvious choice is Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen. The rumors online have spread like wild-fire that these two guys will be the next coaches to go head-to-head on The Ultimate Fighter show to culminate in an anticipated Main Event bout where the two outspoken fighters could let their fists do the talking (so to speak). Sonnen’s suspension doled out by CSAC was cut in half on December 2nd after he faced the board in a hearing. His suspension will be lifted on March 2nd, which renders him conveniently available to do the show.

Another appealing coaching match-up, is Miguel Torres and Urijah Faber. Faber successfully returned to the Bantamweight division and these two facing each other in the cage is inevitable, so why not make a tv show of it? Torres is expected to fight February 5th in UFC 126, but as we’ve seen recently with White pulling Jon Fitch out of his match-up against Jake Ellenberger to now headline UFC 127 along with BJ Penn, if White wants Torres and Faber, White will make it happen.

Finally, White tossed out the idea of Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir who could meet for a rubber match following the show. However, it seems crowd excitement has waned on that idea and with Lesnar taking a hiatus out in the woods somewhere, it may not be a real choice for White…perhaps just a pitch he’s tossing out to throw us off the scent. We know how UFC loves to surprise us with their coaches.
