UFC News: Mark Munoz Says 99 Percent of What Media Sees Isn’t Real Chael Sonnen

In a recent interview with the Score’s Arda Ocal, UFC middleweight contender Mark Munoz talked about his title eliminator bout at UFC on FOX 2 with arguably the fight game’s most polarizing figure: Chael Sonnen. “Chael (Sonnen) is a good guy. We’r…

In a recent interview with the Score‘s Arda Ocal, UFC middleweight contender Mark Munoz talked about his title eliminator bout at UFC on FOX 2 with arguably the fight game’s most polarizing figure: Chael Sonnen.

“Chael (Sonnen) is a good guy. We’re managed by the same manager…the same management team, so we’re actually real cordial…with one another,” Munoz said about his next opponent in the Octagon.

Ocal, recognizing the real life friendship between Munoz and Sonnen, asked “The Filipino Wrecking Machine.”

“If you have this knowledge of Chael Sonnen, what percentage of him talking to the media is him selling the fight, and what percentage is the real Chael Sonnen?”

“Uh..about 99 percent,” Munoz said with a smile, “is (Sonnen) selling the fight.”

Will the relationship between Sonnen and Munoz outside the cage affect what happens inside the Octagon? Munoz certainly doesn’t think so.

“I grew up in the sport of wrestling, so we wrestled our friends all the time,” Munoz recalled. “We competed against our friend all the time…so I’m just gonna leave it at that.”

“It’s just business and we can be friends afterwards,” Munoz said. “The winner buys dinner afterwards.”

When asked if he liked the match up, given that he is one of the few professional fighters today with college wrestling credentials superior to Uncle Chael, Munoz kept his answer vague.

“You know, it’s gonna be a tough fight. No matter how much you slice it. I know Chael’s gonna bring it, I’m gonna bring it too, and the best man is gonna win.”

Munoz also discusses other topics such as the importance of fighters getting sponsored, fighting on the FOX network and the mental aspect of fighting.

The winner of the Jan. 28 title eliminator is expected to take on reigning middleweight champion Anderson Silva in either May or June of 2012.

In Case You Missed It, Watch Chael Sonnen Kill It As the Host of the Fighters Only World MMA Awards Right Here

(“I make this look good.”)

If you didn’t get a chance to watch the replay of the number two best MMA awards — The Fighters Only World MMA Awards Sunday night, don’t worry, we got you.

The highlight of the show were Chael Sonnen’s (likely scripted) one-liners. From poking fun at himself, to taking shots at Wand and Anderson, “The Gangster from America” was on his game.

If you didn’t get a chance to watch the replay of the number two best MMA awards – The Fighters Only World MMA Awards Sunday night, don’t worry, we got you.

The highlight of the show were Chael Sonnen’s (likely scripted) one-liners. From poking fun at himself, to taking shots at Wand and Anderson, “The Gangster from America” was on his game.

What we learned from the show:

• Frankie Munoz and Arianny Celeste make a creepy couple

• Athletes aren’t very good readers

• Dana White was too busy eating sushi in Japan to attend the awards

• Our invite still hasn’t arrived (must have gone to the wrong address)

• Shawn Tompkins was a beloved coach in the sport and deserved the lifetime achievement award and to have the “Coach of the Year” award named after him

• There are a lot of “celebrities” we’ve never heard of

• Leonard Garcia is a good sport for accepting the award for “Submission of the Year” on behalf of “The Korean Zombie

• Arianny had no idea she would win, but she just happened to prepare a  prop for Chael “just in case”

• Chael was right, Anderson Silva DOES speak perfect English

• Roy Nelson’s mullet is fantastic

• Jon Jones doesn’t see anything wrong with saying “you guyses champion”

Arianny Celeste on Chael Sonnen: Say Something to Me, I’ll Say Something Back

Filed under:

It’s not exactly breaking news that Chael Sonnen has the biggest mouth in the UFC and won’t hesitate to talk trash to anyone. But it was a little surprising when he made Arianny Celeste the topic of one recent salvo.

Sonnen said in an interview with Las Vegas Weekly that Celeste, one of the UFC’s Octagon Girls, should be called “the IQ card girl” because, as Sonnen sees it, Celeste is holding up her IQ when she walks around the cage holding up the round number during fights.

“Arianny kind of walks around and holds up her latest test score,” Sonnen said. “One time when there was a title fight, she got all the way up to five and we were very proud of her.”

The UFC Octagon Girls aren’t accustomed to getting into spats with UFC fighters, but Celeste found herself in the midst of such a spat when she heard about Sonnen’s comments. And so Celeste shot back at Sonnen on Twitter.

“Hey what’s ur name.. after @spideranderson kicks your ass..u won’t even be able to count to 5!!” Celeste wrote. “Get ready to kiss brazils ass! Talking crap about me In interviews is like when a boy picks on a girl he likes in 1st grade…GROW UP! Doesn’t work anymore sir! “

That was a surprising exchange, but during an appearance on The MMA Hour, Celeste said the way she hit back at him on Twitter prompted Sonnen to say he was sorry.

“I actually got an apology afterwards,” she said. “The beef has been squashed, until he talks again.”

And Celeste does expect Sonnen to talk again.

“I’m sure he’ll say something again, I don’t doubt it, but I’m the kind of girl who will always fight back,” Celeste said. “I’m not a little prissy girl. If someone says something about me I’m going to say something back. I don’t care who you are.”

As 2011 enters its final days, fans are already looking ahead to what next year will bring them.

Like a child ripping the paper through early Christmas presents, we are caught peeking into the future when there’s still time left before the calender switches over.

2011 brought us a lot of great moments, but 2012 promises to be the best year in MMA.

And if the world is going to end, 2012 better be a good year.

This video was featured as a promotion for the 2011 World MMA Awards and further showed just how good Chael Sonnen is in front of a camera.

In the video, he plays a therapist for UFC light-heavyweight fighter Stephan Bonnar, who is having issues trying to channel the “American Psycho” within.  Obviously a ploy on Bonnar’s nickname but he has been good as of late.

A three fight winning streak, including a “Fight of the Night” performance with Krzysztof Soszynski at UFC 116 showed that the former T.U.F. finalist isn’t ready to hang up the gloves.

What happened next was pure comedy as Sonnen turned on his motivational tactics to send Bonnar on his way, to be the “psycho” he wants to be.

In the video, Sonnen also delivered a couple of punch lines that make me laugh every time I watch.

Sonnen asked Bonnar who the light-heavyweight champion is.  Bonnar said Jon Jones.  The sequence that followed allowed Sonnen to take another shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

At the end, he called in welterweight contender Jon Fitch (who wasn’t featured in the video).

Overall, this was classic Sonnen.  Although he will never admit to being in the business of selling fights, there is no denying that his honesty and vocabulary are what made him so popular to begin with.

His fighting skill isn’t bad either as he is ranked No. 2 in the world, although he would disagree with that rank.

Again, the video just shows that Sonnen’s honesty and his quick wit allows him to be an entertaining fighter in and out of the cage.  Hey, maybe this video was a starting point for Bonnar to make a run at Jon Jones, avenge a loss and win the UFC light-heavyweight title.
