Vitor Belfort Yushin Okami UFC 122

Last week, Vitor Belfort let us all know that instead of expecting a title shot if he defeats Yushin Okami at UFC 122, he expect[s] Jesus, bro, every day. Well, it seems that the Lord has rewarded Belfort’s devotion. The UFC’s Marshall Zelaznik confirmed today that the Belfort/Okami main event in Germany will determine the next challenger to Anderson Silva‘s middleweight belt. "Both Vitor Belfort and Yushin Okami are one win away from a shot at the UFC middleweight title and are coming to Germany with a great deal to win and lose,” Zelaznik said.

Now, we all know that the UFC 122 main event has been upgraded to an official title eliminator because Chael Sonnen pissed hot and will be suspended for up to a year. Obviously, that wasn’t mentioned in the announcement. At some point, the UFC is going to have to make some kind of public statement on the fact that their Fight of the Night-winning former #1 contender won’t be around for a while, and won’t be getting that immediate title rematch that Dana White told everyone about. But for now, promoting Belfort vs. Okami is a more pressing issue, I guess.

As for Belfort, he’s just living proof that if you put your faith in God, you’ll experience miracles. I mean, the dude who said Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer by taking steroids failed a freakin’ steroid test the next month? Honestly, who saw that coming?

Chael Sonnen Could Use the Credibility He Gave Away Right About Now

Most fighters who test positive for a performance-enhancing substance have two options: 1) they can deny it all the way to the grave, hoping that a fervent and lengthy appeal will bolster the case for their innocence, or 2) they can own up to it, do the mea culpa dance, and spend the next year laying low.

Chael Sonnen isn’t most fighters. He likes to keep us guessing. When an apology or at least an explanation seems like the most rational course of action – remember when he claimed that Lance Armstrong gave himself cancer? – he instead opts for the completely implausible denial. When you think he’s going to be as virulently obstinate as ever, such as after his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117, he throws you a curveball and acts like a dignified gentleman, declaring that the better man always wins.

So now that he’s been branded a cheater by the California State Athletic Commission and the MMA world awaits his reaction, what path will he choose? Will he blame supplements or over-the-counter medication? Will he explain that he needed help pushing through an injury? Will he say he did it and he’s not at all sorry? Will he blame some guy with a Hispanic accent?

We have yet to find out, but it’s worth noting that in times like these it sure would be nice to have a reputation for something other than being the guy who’s willing to say absolutely anything.

A few notable points that have emerged since yesterday’s bombshell that Chael Sonnen tested positive for performance enhancing drugs following UFC 117

– According to the L.A. Times’ Lance Pugmire, Sonnen tested positive for a "natural steroid" before his fight with Anderson Silva. Natural steroids, such as androstenedione and dehydroepiandrosterone, aren’t chemically altered like synthetic steroids, and can be sold over-the-counter as supplements at health food stores.

– Sonnen is facing a year-long suspension and a $2,500 fine, which he has 30 days to appeal. According to California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd, Sonnen’s positive test emerged from a urine sample he gave before the fight that was processed through the UCLA Olympic drug-testing lab.

Over the weekend, CSAC Executive Officer GEORGE DODD says UFC Middleweight, CHAEL SONNEN was informed he tested positive for performance enhancing drugs after results came in from his UFC 117 post fight drug test.  Sonnen put in a stellar performance dominating Middleweight Champion, ANDERSON SILVA for almost five rounds before losing to Silva via triangle choke.  Though Sonnen took the official loss, he impressed thousands of spectators within Oakland’s Oracle Arena as well as close to a million PPV buyers.  Anderson Silva was so taken by the beating handed to him by Sonnen, that he himself got down on his knees and rested his Middleweight Championship belt before him.

All of the glory may have been robbed from Chael Sonnen’s hard-working fight to leave us with a bad taste in our mouth.  I hear that’s a side effect from steroids.  Chael Sonnen may now just be an embarrassment to himself and to the MMA sport as news of his PED tests will add to the fodder that this sport may not be legit.

Chael Sonnen boasted prior to UFC 117 that it would be Anderson Silva’s final performance in the UFC promotion…well, Sonnen, looks like it may be yours.

Few additional details have been released regarding Chael Sonnen‘s reported failed performance-enhancing drug test at UFC 117.

If found guilty, Sonnen could face up to a one-year suspension from the California State Athletic Commission, which would obviously put his title rematch against Anderson Silva, currently scheduled for Jan. 2011, on ice.

However, Silva’s manager, Ed Soares, told MMA Fighting Sunday that he has yet to hear from the UFC regarding any change of plans.

“I’m going to consider the fight being a fight until told otherwise,” Soares said. “If it is a mishap, I hope this whole thing gets straightened out.”

Chael SonnenIn a blockbuster development that will have far-reaching ramifications for both the way we view one of the biggest fights of 2010 and the potential for a rematch of that fight in 2011, Chael Sonnen has reportedly been informed that he tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs after his loss to Anderson Silva at UFC 117.

Sonnen will presumably be suspended, and a second middleweight title fight between Sonnen and Silva — which undoubtedly would have been among the biggest fights for the UFC next year — may need to be scrapped.

“[Sonnen] received his notice yesterday,” California State Athletic Commission Executive Officer George Dodd told Sherdog.com.
