Former UFC lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira has responded to Islam Makhachev’s concerns.

In just under two weeks, Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev will lock horns in the main event of UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi for the vacant lightweight title.

Oliveira is currently riding an impressive 11-fight win streak, defeating some of the best lightweights in the world on his way to capturing the 155lb title. Stoppage wins over Michael Chandler, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje all within one year tells you all you need to know about ‘do Bronx.’

As for Makhachev, who holds a 10-fight win streak, it’s not about who he has beaten but how he has done it. Aside from his lone knockout loss against Adriano Martins in 2015, when Makhachev was just 23 years old, the Dagestan native has rolled through his opponents.

Makhachev, much like his close friend and training partner Khabib Nurmagomdeov, possesses serious wrestling and top control ability. Makhachev has also proven himself to be a little more well-rounded than Nurmagomedov, with some excellent striking displays.

Both are heading into the contest with extreme levels of confidence and aren’t afraid to show it. The pair have engaged in some small back-and-forths over social media, the most recent of which had Makhachev claiming Oliveira might not even show up to Abu Dhabi.

Oliveira wouldn’t take long to reply, posting a photo of him to Instagram captioned “Calm down, dad is coming. Hello Abu Dhabi.”

While both usually aren’t known for trash-talking or ‘disrespectful’ behavior, expect this one to heat up and for the face-off to be especially fiery. As for the fight itself, expect the unexpected. Both men have proven they can finish the fight anywhere that it goes.

Who have you got, Charles Oliveira or Islam Makhachev?

Islam Makhachev is just days away from the biggest fight of his professional career when he meets former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira, in the UFC 280 main event.

After seven years with the promotion and 10 straight victories inside the Octagon, Makhachev will get his long-awaited world title opportunity, but the Dagestani striker is not entirely convinced that ‘Do Bronx’ will show up for their showdown on Yas Island. With the main event less than two weeks away, Makhachaev brought attention to a news article on Twitter detailing Oliveira’s intentions to arrive in Abu Dhabi 20 days ahead of the bout in order to acclimate to the time difference and the weather. With 14 days to go, Oliveira still hasn’t arrived at Fight Island.

“2 weeks before the fight, Charles and his team not in Abu Dhabi yet., should I start worry ? ???” Makhachev tweeted.

Islam Makhachev’s Mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov Not Convinced Charles Oliveira Will Show Up For UFC 280

While one could simply dismiss the tweet as Islam Makhachev stirring the pot before the two fighters clash in the cage, there are others in the Islam Makhachev camp convinced that Oliveira is going to pull a no-show. UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov tweeted his belief that Oliveira would not show up at UFC 280 and claimed the promotion would replace ‘Do Bronx’ with Beneil Dariush.

“I just think Charles Oliveira will not show up in Abu Dhabi and the UFC will replace Charles with Beneil Dariush. Regardless of who the opponent will be, @MAKHACHEVMMA is on his way to becoming the best in the world #ufc280”

That scenario is not outside the realm of possibility as Dariush is scheduled to face Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 280 and previously confirmed his spot as the official backup should either of the two main eventers be unable to compete.

Charles Oliveira captured the lightweight championship at UFC 262 in May 2021. After a successful defense against Dustin Poirier six months later, ‘Do Bronx’ was stripped of the title after failing to make the 155-pound weight limit for his UFC 274 bout with Justin Gaethje. The fight proceeded as scheduled with Oliveira scoring a second-round submission leaving the lightweight title vacant. At UFC 280, that vacancy will be filled one way or another.

Justin Gaethje UFC 280

Justin Gaethje has offered his prediction for the UFC 280 main event. Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev will battle for the UFC lightweight throne. The US-born Gaethje has tried his hand twice for UFC gold, once against Oliveira and once against Makhachev’s training partner Khabib Nurmagomedov, so he has a unique perspective on the matchup.

In an exclusive interview with Makoa Goble of LowKickMMA, the lightweight UFC fighter Gaethje explained that he has a pick, but also recognizes that anything can happen:

“The main part of that statement is going to be Oliveira’s ability to not be submitted by Makhachev. If he doesn’t get submitted, then most likely, he’s on his back for three rounds or more. And Makhachev wins a decision. That’s what everyone if you know anything about this that’s what you think is supposed to happen. But if you just watch Kamaru’s fight then you know that this is the best sport in the world because anything can happen at any given moment.”

Gaethje is referring to Kamaru Usman winning the majority of his welterweight title fight against Leon Edwards until Edwards scored a head-kick knockout in the final minute of this bout to capture the welterweight crown.

The 33-year-old Gaethje sounds as though he largely supports the Brazilian “do Bronx” Oliveira. The former WSOF champion continued:

“I’m excited to watch it. I hope Oliveira beats him up. I hope Oliveira keeps it standing. I hope Oliveira gets on top of him. It’d be cool to see all those things. We’ll see, we’ll see what happens.”

What’s next for Justin Gaethje?

The American fighter Justin Gaethje has made it clear that he wants the UFC lightweight world championship. He has been a perennial top-contender for several years and is considered one of the most exciting fighters in MMA. But he still wants that UFC gold.

While speaking with LowKickMMA Gaethje said that he is two wins away from another shot at the title. He said:

“I only win one way and that’s the highlight fashion. I think it could be one [fight] depending on who. But most likely two ‘Justin Gaethje finishes’ and then I’m back in it. That’s the plan.”

Gaethje was a perfect 17-0 before making his UFC debut. The US-born athlete has gone 6-4 in the UFC with all of his losses being against current or former champions. He has also notably earned multiple ‘Fight of the Year‘ awards from many publications.

Charles Oliveira has been receiving some help in wrestling defense ahead of his fight for the vacant UFC lightweight title in Abu Dhabi.

This would have been the third defense of Oliveira’s title reign meaning he would have equaled Khabib’s record of three title defenses should he win, but he missed weight by half a pound in his last fight.

“Do Bronx” is currently on an eleven-fight win streak, beating former interim lightweight title holders Justin Gaethje, Dustin Poirier, and Tony Ferguson.

However, Oliveira is facing an opponent that he may not have faced before in Khabib’s prodigy Islam Makhachev.

This fight is being seen as a style clash between Brazilian Ju-jitsu vs Dagestan wrestling to see who will have the best ground game.

Some would say this is the closest we will ever get to prime Khabib vs Tony Ferguson.

A video shared by TheMacLife shows Oliviera working on his wrestling with trips as well as using the cage.

What should the game plans be for Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev

In ‘Do Bronx’s’ few fights, despite the fact that he faced two high-level wrestlers in Justin Gaethje and Micheal Chandler, neither attempted to use their wrestling, instead, they opted to stand and trade punches with the now former champion. This led to Oliveira KOing Chandler and knocking Gaethje down before submitting him. Considering he also threw hands with the lethal Dustin Poirier, it would be a fair assumption to presume Oliveira will have the edge in the striking department.

However, in Makhachev’s last two fights, he has overwhelmed both his opponents with a high level of pressure, leading to either a TKO or submission. Whilst Oliveira does appear to have a slight advantage on the feet, on the ground, it’s anyone’s guess which will be stronger out of BJJ or Dagestan wrestling.
