On October 22nd, Charles Oliveira will step back into the Octagon, taking on Khabib Nurmagomedov’s protege Islam Makhachev to crown a new UFC lightweight champion.

With 10 straight wins, Makhachev walks into the bout as the No. 4 ranked lightweight, but he will face the toughest test of his mixed martial arts career as he meets the man many still recognize as the true lightweight champion. Guiding Makhachev in his training for a showdown with ‘Do Bronx’ is none other than UFC Hall of Famer, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The former UFC lightweight champion discussed his protege’s mental and physical state going into the biggest fight of his career in an interview clip shared by UFC Europe on Twitter.

“Islam (Makhachev) is at his peak right now. He’s not 26, 27, or 23. He’s 30. A week after the fight he’ll be 31. It’s the best time for any athlete. It’s a time when your mental and physical states should be in synergy. Sometimes your mental state is high, but your physical state is going down. Or when you’re 27 and at your physical peak, but your mental state is lower because you’re just 27, not 31.

“I think Islam is better than [Charles] overall. Of course, there are some potential dangers that we’re working on. Dangers where Islam needs to be careful. Other than that, Islam should roll over him. It’s my opinion. Somebody might not like it, but again, I’m just stating my opinion. People say that’s disrespect, but I see no disrespect here. On October 22nd, we want to go through him.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov Says Tony Ferguson’s ‘Time Is Up’

While Khabib Nurmagomedov has kept busy preparing Islam Makhachaev for his long-awaited UFC title opportunity, the undefeated icon still finds time to talk about division rival Tony Ferguson.

Despite the fact that the two stars never faced each other inside the Octagon, both have spent what feels like a lifetime taking shots at one another in interviews and on social media. Khabib has once again spoken out about ‘El Cucuy‘ and his recent struggles inside the Octagon.

“His time is up, and there’s no way to get it back,” Nurmagomedov said. “Not Khabib, not Tony, nobody. We had our time, and it passed. He continues to fight. He needs money. You have to pay your bills in the U.S., and I’m sure that since he’s a Californian, I know all the Californian fighters – everything he earned, take half of that. I think he keeps fighting for money to pay bills, taxes. He has a family, I think he has two kids. I don’t blame him, but you can’t get back time. When your time goes away it doesn’t ask your name.”

Tony Ferguson is currently riding a five-fight losing streak, though, to his credit, those losses have come against some of the absolute best fighters in the world including Charles Oliveira, Justin Gaethje, and Michael Chandler. Most recently, ‘El Cucuy’ suffered a fourth-round submission loss to Nate Diaz in the UFC 279 main event on September 10th.

The battle for the lightweight thone has a formidable substitute should things go sideways. Alexander Volkanovski, the UFC featherweight champion, is tapped to be the fill-in should either main event fighter, Charles Oliveira or Islam Makhachev, be unable to make the fight at UFC 280.

The Australian champion Alexander Volkanovski shared on Twitter:

“It’s Official, I’m the backup fighter for the Light Weight title! See you all in Abu Dhabi ? #UFC280.”

A featherweight champion being backup for a lightweight title fight is reminiscent of UFC 223. In 2018, the mentor of Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov was booked to fight Tony Ferguson for the vacant UFC lightweight championship. Due to a last-minute knee injury on Ferguson’s side, the UFC brought in Max Holloway, then-featherweight king, to face Dagestan’s Nurmagomedov. For various reasons, this fight also never materialized.

The UFC 280 main event is a lightweight clash for the vacant throne. Due to weight issues on the side of Brazil’s Charles Oliveira, he was not eligible to walk away with the title in his last win against Justin Gaethje. The weight cut to the 155 championship limit has been draining on both Russia’s Makhachev and ‘Do Bronx.’ Should there be any issues or injuries, the featherweight champion ‘The Great’ Alexander Volkanovski will be on deck to capture gold in a second division. UFC 280 will go down on October 22.

Alexander Volkanovski at lightweight

‘The Great’ Alexander Volkanovski has a perfect undefeated record in the UFC. The Australian world champion has defended his illustrious title against notable fighters such as ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung, Brian Ortega, and Max Holloway. Volkanovski has been aiming for a lightweight title clash for some time.

Sitting down with fellow Australian countryman Robert Whittaker earlier this year, Volkanovski laid out his case for why he wants the lightweight title. He said:

“I’m in a position now where I want to take my best options. What’s the best route for me and things like that. Obviously lightweight — I’ve been talking about wanting to do that, and I didn’t wait until I went out there and finished that chapter with Max to really call for it. I’m the type of guy I feel like it needs to be earned. You ain’t just going to call for things if it’s not deserved.

Volkanovski went on to add that moving to lightweight and making a bid for a second title makes sense as featherweight needs some time to sort itself out. He continued:

“I think I deserve it. A lot of people are talking about it and want it, so I want to go out and take on that challenge. I know a lot of people want to see it. Right now, there’s a lot of killers in our division. But I want a clear No. 1 guy.”

Islam Makhachev isn’t afraid of Charles Oliveira’s Jiu-Jitsu: ‘I’m going to knock him down and try to finish him’

Islam Makhachev isn’t afraid of Charles Oliveira’s ground game, nor is he afraid of his striking.

The highly anticipated bout between Oliveira and Makhachev is slated for the headlining bout at UFC 280, in Abu Dhabi. The fight will crown a “new” lightweight champion, as the belt had been vacated due to Oliveira missing weight by a half pound in his most recent championship fight.

Oliveira has been rolling through the elite fighters of the division, finishing his opponent no matter where the fight brings him. Oliveira uses his striking excellently and when knocks his opponent to the canvas, he uses his brilliant jiu-jitsu to submit his opponent. Oliveira displayed this in both the Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje fights. Even though Oliveira has tremendous striking and even better ground game, Makhachev isn’t too worried about where the fight goes.

“His last three or four opponents, they knock him down and nobody goes to grappling,” Makhachev said in an interview with The National. “Nobody tried to finish him there. Nobody tried to do some ground-and-pound. That’s why nobody from these opponents could stop him, But I’m not scared of his jiu-jitsu skills because I have good skills in Sambo and grappling and will give him a hard time in striking. That’s why I’m going to knock him down and try to finish him. Because this guy has most finishes in the UFC, my goal is I have to finish him. I’m going to take his record.” (Transcribed by MMAJunkie)

Islam Makhachev isn’t afraid to go to the canvas and use his wrestling skills against Oliveira.

Many fighters like Gaethje and Poirier, let ‘Do Bronx’ back to his feet after knocking him down, but Makhachev would have followed up those strikes with ground and pound. Makhachev doesn’t have the same striking ability of Gaethje or Poirier, so his best chance of getting the fight to the ground would most likely be through his wrestling skills.

Oliveira may be the best all-around fighter of all time, as this will not be an easy fight for either man. Makhachev is as dangerous as it gets when the fight gets to the ground, attacking any submission he can with ferocity. This will be the ultimate test of jiu-jitsu vs samba wrestling.
