Francis Ngannou ONE Championship tried signing him with Nelson Mandela comparisons

Francis Ngannou has revealed that ONE Championship CEO, Chatri Sityodtong had attempted to sway his signature from a verbal agreement with the PFL (Professional Fighters League) – claiming the promotion could make him as influential as the late anti-apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela.

Ngannou, a former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion up and until his departure from the promotion back in January of this year, was the subject of main headlines across the globe this week, after his ground-breaking move to the above-mentioned, PFL was confirmed.

Francis Ngannou is expected to make his PFL debut next year

However, the Cameroon knockout artist, who will ride an impressive six-fight winning spree into his expected mixed martial arts return next year, held crunch talks with Singapore-based promotion, ONE Championship before his move to the PFL.

Revealing some details of that lengthy sit-down with the above-mentioned, Sityodtong in Los Angeles earlier this month, Francis Ngannou claimed that the promotional CEO had just put on a performance for him – in regards to the organization’s statistics and prowess

“I think Chatri (Sityodtong) was just performing,” Francis Ngannou told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I told him and Matt Hume that I got the best offer from PFl and I don’t think, I’m not going to do any negotiation with you guys. That was like back, six weeks before that. And he was like, ‘Oh, I can fly you to Singapore. I can fly to Cameroon. I got this.’ He was all in. I was like, this is too much. I don’t know how to handle this.”

“How are you going to fly to Cameroon? What for? I just told the guy the situation and then he kept pushing. Then I sent it to my team. ‘I can’t handle this pressure from Chatri.’ Then he kept pushing, kept pushing. …So I have to see, for respect. We had a talk, I respect the guy, Matter of fact, I love Chatri. Now I even question if that story is true. But I used to love that story.”

And furthermore, during the discussion, Ngannou claims how Sityodtong tried to convince him that the organization could make the Batié native as well-known and influential as former South African president, Mandela.

“I have to drink three or four cups of coffee, listening to all those statistics, how ONE FC is in Asia, Asia is a 4.6 billion people [population], they’re going to do this, they showed me how ONE FC is going to explode, I’m going to be like Nelson Mandela,” Francis Ngannou continued. Brok, it was a hell of a performance. By the way, I applaud Chatri for his performance.”

ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong responded to an apparent jab on Twitter from former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou after reports of negotiations between the two parties fell apart.

Appearing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, Sityodtong revealed that he had scheduled a meeting with Ngannou to present the promotion’s final offer. Unfortunately, ONE was unable to come to terms with the Cameroonian. After reportedly meeting with ‘The Predator’ for three hours, Sityodtong claimed that ONE withdrew their offer, citing “non-financial” issues as the biggest obstacle between the two parties. Since then, Sityodtong has lobbed multiple claims, suggesting that Ngannou was looking for a seat on the board of directors and power over his opponents’ purse.

‘The Predator’ seemingly responded to Sityodtong’s comments on Twitter, posting an image of Batman villain Two-Face with the caption, “Some promoters man.”

ONE CEO Wishes Francis Ngannou the Best in His Future Endeavors

Speaking with the South China Morning Post mere hours away from the promotion’s highly anticipated U.S. debut on May 5, Sityodtong was asked about Ngannou’s tweet.

“I wish Francis the very best. He’s a good guy. He’s a good champion. It’s unfortunate that ONE, we decided to withdraw from the process, but it doesn’t take anything away from Francis’ life story,” Sityodtong said. “He’s an incredible martial artist. I wish him the best wherever he goes, wherever he ends up. Francis is a stud. He’s a good guy.”

ONE Championship’s final offer to the heavyweight free agent was reportedly worth a guaranteed $20 million. However, it sounds as though Ngannou had already verbally agreed to sign with another organization even before Sityodtong sat down with him. No official announcements have been made as of this writing, but rumors are running rampant that the Professional Fighters League handed Ngannou the winning offer.

Conor McGregor took aim at ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong after the Asia-based promotion bowed out of negotiations with former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.

ONE Championship is set to make its long-awaited debut in the United States on May 5. Emanating from the 1stBank Center in Denver, ONE Fight Night 10 will feature a ONE flyweight world title headliner as reigning champion Demetrious Johnson defends against former titleholder Adriano Moraes.

Weeks before the historic event, Sityodtong revealed that he had a meeting lined up with Francis Ngannou to present the promotions final offer. As it turns out, the final offer, reportedly worth a guaranteed $20 million, was never presented as the parties were too far apart on “non-financial” issues.

“After careful reflection, we decided not to submit our final offer… Francis is a good guy and a good champion,” Sityodtong told the South China Morning Post. “I wish him continued success and happiness. At the end of the day, I didn’t feel Francis and I were fully aligned on non-financial matters. It is nothing personal. It is just a lack of alignment.

Conor McGregor Trashes ONE CEO in a Since-Deleted Tweet

Responding to the news story on social media, Conor McGregor delivered his scathing take on the situation, targeting ONE Championship’s CEO in a now-deleted tweet.

“This chatri guy is a lying dishonorable mouth piece,” McGregor posted. “One championship is not one worth one cent.”

Conor McGregor and ONE Championship have not been on good terms with one another dating back to 2017. In an interview with CNN, Sityodtong suggested that even if the Irishman had become a free agent at some point, he would not have signed him, citing his antics outside of the cage undeniably helped to make him a megastar in the world of combat sports.

If Conor McGregor was a free agent, ONE Championship would not try to sign him. We don’t want somebody to swear at people, throw water bottles, disrespect people, call out people’s wives and children, and – in my opinion – other distasteful stuff that is not representative of true martial arts,” Sityodtong said.

Former UFC title contender, Chael Sonnen claims Francis Ngannou could be signing a deal very shortly

It was some months ago now that Francis Ngannou and the UFC parted ways following an ugly contract dispute. After the two parties were unable to come to an agreement, Ngannou would walk away from the promotion, and his title.

Since his departure, Ngannou has een linked with several other MMA promotions and even professional boxers. However, in a run-in with One Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong Sonnen revealed via his YouTube channel that a deal may be close to being done.

Chael Sonnen reveals Francis Ngannou conversation

Discussing the Ngannou situation, Sonnen revealed that he had run into Sityodtong and that the promoter might have let slip something.

“Chatri [Sityodtong] said to me ‘Chael as you know we’re in talks with Francis’ and he said ‘I predict you’re going to hear some big news of Francis coming very soon.’” Said, Sonnen.

“So I said ‘Did you mean to say that’ and he re-answered it”, Sonnen continued. “He said well, ‘I wasn’t trying to hint that I’ve already done a deal with Francis, as a matter of fact – to be candid with you – where I’m at in the process is I have one final presentation to make to Francis’. So by saying that Chatri is letting us know that I’ve been in talks with him, I’ve made him some offers, we didn’t get it done.”

Whether Ngannou does go to One Championship or not, it has been 14 months since the heavyweight last compete and while rumours fly – he seems no closer to a fight date than he was a few months ago.

A leaked ONE Championship contract for a bout agreement has caused anger within the MMA community due.

Since being founded in 2011, One has carved out a decent piece of the pie in terms of the MMA space. They have developed their own stars, attracted big names to sign with them and have built a solid fanbase, particularly in Asia. They also appeal to fans of the more traditional martial arts, putting fights on across different disciplines including Brazilian-jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and kickboxing.

However, while they have seemed like a good force in the space and could present themselves as competition for the UFC, a recent contract leak does not paint ONE Championship in a good light.

The contract was for strawweight mixed-martial artist Anelya Toktogonova, who would be making her promotional debut against Aleksandra Sacicheva under the ONE Championship banner. The contract reveals she would be paid just $1300/$1300, meaning she would recent just thirteen-hundred to show and the same amount if she won.

While the UFC have come under heavy fire over the years for the fighter pay, the minimum contracts have been reported to be $12,000/$12,000.

While One brands itself as a more family friendly brand that is more true to the way of martial arts, this is just another example of the promotions recent actions that call into account their legitimacy. in august of last year, they would switch their business operations from Singapore to the Cayman Islands – a move that could be conclude to have been made due to the Islands having no income or withholding taxes.

One also recently sought after new investments and would receive several millions of dollars from Qatar Investment Authority. this investment authority is Qatar’s national sovereign wealth fund, which has invested billions into different sports in attempt to sport wash. The Qatar government has come under heavy scrutiny for their human rights violations and their treatment of LGBT community.
