It’s widely understood that in order to compete at the highest level in any sport, athletes must be supremely disciplined and make sacrifices in their personal lives to be able to perform at their best.

For professional MMA fighters, it goes without saying that staying up late partying, drinking alcohol, and taking recreational drugs are things to avoid, especially in the build-up to a fight, but for some, it seems the temptation is too strong to resist.

In this article we’ll look at the lives of 10 MMA stars who became so seduced by the party lifestyle that even the daunting prospect of an upcoming fight looming large on the horizon wasn’t enough to stop them from succumbing to their base instincts, and furthermore show how this rarely lead to a happy ending in the long run.

Jon Jones

As the UFC’s light heavyweight champion and one of the sport’s all-time greats, Jon Jones appeared to have the world at his feet, but that wasn’t enough for the self-destructive star.

Though he’d had minor issues in the past, alarm bells started ringing loudly in early 2015 when Jones tested positive for cocaine just weeks prior to his UFC 182 title defense against Daniel Cormier.

His various run-ins with both the law and USADA since are well documented, but in an interview on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Jones gave further insight into just how out-of-control his behavior had been over the years.

“I had this crazy thing that I would do where I would party one week before every fight and I did that throughout my whole career,” Jones confessed to Rogan. “…I would get blacked out wasted.

“My logic was if this guy was to beat me somehow I can look myself in the mirror and say that I lost because I got hammered the week before the fight. It was a safety net. I did it my whole career.”

The 30-year-old Jones was recently stripped of his light heavyweight title for the third time in three years after testing positive for steroids and is now facing another potentially lengthy suspension in the prime of his career.

From Reality TV To Real Estate: Exclusive Interview With Chris Leben

chris-leben-600x400

For over 12 years Chris Leben was loved, loathed, and known worldwide as “The Crippler.” A man who wore his emotions on his sleeve. Fought with reckless abandonment and a kill or be killed attitude. Putting on some of the most memorable fights in the UFC’s history. That part of his life is now over. Since retiring in January of 2014 Leben has been working to find himself. In this exclusive interview we talk about the high’s and lows that have gone on over the last two and a half years.

Chris has always been known for his crazy antics and party boy lifestyle. Now, almost a full year sober, Chris is learning to deal with some of the consequences of living that way for so long. Ruining any chance of a comeback and putting life as a whole in perspective for the 36 year old fighter. “…As far as my heart goes, the doctor said right now, there is basically a one to three percent chance it will just stop working in the next year. Ya know. So and I’m like jeeze. What was it like when it was at 18% (left ventricle functionality)? If now it’s one to three? It’s moving in the right direction…”

Just like his heart condition, Leben seems to have his life moving in the right direction. Listen to the full interview to hear Chris talk about his thoughts on Hendo v.s. Bisping 2, what Team Quest was like in the beginning, what it was like opening up in his book, and much more. Love him. Hate him. It doesn’t matter. “The Crippler” will always be one of the most important fighters to ever step foot in the Octagon.

Chris Leben Talks About Heart Condition That Prevented His MMA Return In Bellator

Former UFC fighter and breakout star from season one of The Ultimate Fighter reality show — Chris Leben — spoke with MMAFighting.com’s Luke Thomas on “The Luke Thomas Show” on SIRIUS/XM radio on Friday about the heart condition that kept him from making his MMA fighting return in the Bellator cage as was originally intended after he signed a contract with the promotion in February.

Below are highlights of the interview from the aforementioned “Luke Thomas Show,” which airs every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on SIRIUS/XM 93.

On what the doctors found wrong with his heart:

“Basically, I was doing my pre-fight stuff. I failed the EKG, so I took four more, continued to fail as my left ventricle was putting out too much electricity. They did a cardio-ecogram where they went in and actually look. They do an ultrasound of your heart while it’s pumping.

“Unfortunately, my left ventricle is oversized, misshapen and not pumping correctly. It’s pumping at 18 percent, which I’m told is not a good thing.”

On if he had been feeling symptoms prior to the exam:

“You know, that’s the crazy thing. I’ve never felt better. That was the big thing about this comeback was I’m off the Suboxone, I’m off the medications the doctors have been giving me. I’m 100 percent drug, alcohol free and eating healthy. I’m in the gym, I’m beating up all the 20-year-olds. I’m a little leaner than I used to be and I’m back to eating meat again, but that’s great for fighting.

“I was doing awesome. I would come in in the morning, I’d do jiu-jitsu with Baret Yoshida, then I’d come and do my kickboxing with Vince, then I’d do go over with Andy and do my strength and conditioning, so three hours in the morning and I was back for team practice at night.”

On what doctors told him would happen if he had continued fighting:

“The doctors were like, ‘You don’t have a problem walking up these stairs?’ That’s the way they’re looking at it. They’re blown away that I’m performing the way that I am, that I can do the things I can do with my heart, because it’s just not pumping the blood and apparently that’s an important thing. It’s definitely extremely frustration.

“[They were most worried about] stroke, heart attack, yeah. Heart failure is actually the condition. Basically, my heart is failing. It’s got dead tissue on it, it’s oversized. There’s plethora of reasons this can happen. It happens more commonly to athletes.

They’re not saying it’s linked to alcohol or anything like that, but my guess is I train my ass off when I’m in the gym. I never miss a day in the gym, but for a long time, I also took advantage of the night life as well. So, I’m kinda burning the candle from both ends for years. I think my heart just couldn’t take it.”

Former UFC fighter and WEC champion Chris Leben has had some hard times lately. Leben decided to call it quits in Jan. 2014 ending a 12-year long career that included 22 fights in the UFC. Following that decision, he was ordered to 120 days in jail after he was convicted of breaking and entering his ex-wife’s apartment, possession of illegal firearms and violating a court order held by Kaleena Leben. He started his sentence back in September of 2015.

However, things were looking up for him as he signed an exclusive multi-year, multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA last month.

Leben’s management team revealed to MMAjunkie that Leben’s comeback is no more after doctors found a severe medical condition that left him with just 18 percent of normal blood flow to his heart.

Doctors discovered a “life-threatening abnormality” to the left ventricle of his heart, which was “oversized,” “misshapen,” and “not operating prop

“Leben also hopes to leverage his many life lessons for the benefit of others,” the statement read. “He plans to devote time to communicating with young people and the MMA community about the dangers of drug use and about how to cope with addiction.

“Leben says that he is grateful to the fans, friends and family that have been there for him throughout his life and career. He will continue to fight the good fight, and has confidence that strict dedication to nutrition and wellness will allow him to succeed in this battle.”

We wish Leben all the best.

If you were one of the almost everyone who thought that nothing good could come of Chris Leben’s unretirement, then boy do we have some good news for you. And by good news, we of course mean “somehow even more terrible news.”

The longtime UFC veteran, who called an end to his 11-year career back in January of 2014 only to sign with Bellator last month, has recently been forced out of his promotional debut according to MMAJunkie…and not for the reasons you might think.

Chris Leben is no longer coming out of retirement to fight for Bellator after doctors found a severe medical condition that left him with just 18 percent of normal blood flow to his heart.

Leben signed with Bellator this past month and was undergoing a physical in order to be cleared for a spring return when he failed several electrocardiogram (EKG) tests, according to the statement sent out by Leben’s management team. Doctors discovered a “life-threatening abnormality” to the left ventricle of his heart, which was “oversized,” “misshapen,” and “not operating properly.”

A combination of life-saving drugs was immediately prescribed to Leben in hopes of preventing “a catastrophic cardiac event.”

Yes, it appears that Leben’s well-documented struggles with alcohol and substance abuse have finally caught up to him in the worst way possible. And it gets worse.

“As of now, the prognosis is mixed: one doctor believes that he should be considered for a heart transplant, while another doctor hopes that medication and a healthy lifestyle will reverse some of the damage over time,” the statement read.

In either case, it’s safe to say that we won’t be seeing Leben fighting again, unless the vultures over at Venator FC sign him. As big fans of the guy, we’d like to wish a smooth recovery to Leben in what may very well turn out to be the biggest fight of his life. Sometimes it takes a wake-up call as big as this to truly open someone’s eyes to the issues facing them, and we hope that this will certainly be the case for the much-troubled TUF alum.

If the statement sent out by his management team is to be believed, it looks like Leben will face his latest setback head-on.

“Leben says that he is grateful to the fans, friends and family that have been there for him throughout his life and career. He will continue to fight the good fight, and has confidence that strict dedication to nutrition and wellness will allow him to succeed in this battle.”
