Curtis Blaydes is looking forward to facing the winner of Ciryl Gane and Tai Tuivasa, after his win over Tom Aspinall at UFC: London.

The fight didn’t go exactly how Blaydes envisioned the bout going, as he won via TKO/injury in 15 seconds. Aspinall’s knee blew out as he went to take a step back, after landing a leg kick on Blaydes. It was another unfortunate end to a card, just one week after the Yair Rodriguez vs Brian Ortega fight.

Blaydes claimed that he wan’t even going to go to his wrestling, and wanted to stand and throw hands with Aspinall. He was asked in his post-fight interview if that was the plan.

“Yeah, everyone was hyping up his speed. He’s not as fast as you guys think he seems to be. I know it was only 15 seconds, but every exchange he got touched. A lot of his highlights when he’s sparking these guys, they’re stagnant… I don’t believe the hype, I just don’t think he’s that fast.” Blaydes said.

Curtis Blaydes will only fight the winner of Gane vs Tuivasa, and won’t fight down the rankings

“Heading into this fight I envisioned the winner, who is me, facing the winner of Gane and Tuivasa. I’m not ‘gonna pass up an opportunity to fight those guys.” Blaydes said

He continued on to another question, asking whether he would rather fight again instead of waiting for Gane and Tuivasa.

“No, why would I do that? That doesn’t help me with the rankings at all. Staying active? You don’t have to stay active. You have to beat highly ranked opponents. So I’m going to wait for the winner, I will not be taking numbers 6-8. It doesn’t help me, it helps them. I’m not looking to give any handouts.”

Blaydes was firm that he would like to fight the winner of Gane and Tuivasa. A win over one of them, would insure him a title fight as well.

Former interim UFC Heavyweight Champion Ciryl Gane is preparing to return to the Octagon for the first time since Francis Ngannou added the opening blemish to his professional MMA record.

At the January 2022 pay-per-view, tension was high as Ngannou, entering the final fight of his active deal, bet on himself in a big way. While initial success on the feet for Gane at UFC 270 looked to suggest that the Cameroonian was on his way to a significantly weakened position in his contractual dispute with the UFC, “The Predator” evolved.

After catching Gane’s leg and capitalizing with a takedown, Ngannou employed wrestling-heavy offense across the final three rounds, an adjustment that helped him record a unanimous decision victory in Anaheim.

Since the unification showdown, neither man has been seen in the cage. While the champion underwent surgery to repair ligament damage he’d sustained weeks before his fight with Gane, the Frenchman turned his attention to some outside-the-Octagon ventures, including a public sporting appearance that saw him swap MMA gloves for soccer boots for a charity game.

Now, while Ngannou continues his recovery on the sidelines, Gane is set for his chance to rebound, and it could come in some style. “Bon Gamin” will headline the UFC’s French debut in September when he shares the cage with Tai Tuivasa in front of a home Parisian crowd.

While an eight-month gap between fights isn’t exactly lengthy, it represents Gane’s longest layoff from the Octagon aside a year away between 2019-2020, which saw the COVID-19 pandemic wreak havoc across the globe and prevent many international fighters from competing.

During a recent interview with MMA Junkie’s Farah Hannoun, Gane discussed his break from action. Having fought 11 times since making his professional debut in 2018, the 32-year-old was appreciative of the time off given that he’s always been in a “rush.”

“Not really (would I have liked to fight sooner). Because I knew already UFC wanted to do this in September. I was already prepared in my mind to wait for September,” said Gane. “And after (UFC 270), I had a lot of pressure, a lot of solicitation of the media, a lot of feeling with this fight with Francis, something like that.

“All my career, I was in a rush, you see? I started just four years ago, my career in MMA. I started a little (over) three years (ago) in the UFC, and it’s all I did. I was always in a rush,” Gane continued. “So, to have a few months like that, a few more months like that, this has maybe helped me to be better for my next fight.

Gane Explains How Mindset Towards Ngannou Rematch Has Changed

While Gane’s period on the sidelines has helped him to improve as a fighter ahead of his next appearance in the cage, it’s also caused an adjustment to his mindset.

Soon after his defeat to Ngannou, the Frenchman had a chance at redemption on his mind. At the UFC 270 post-fight press conference, Gane admitted that he hoped “The Predator” would sign a new deal with the promotion so that he could have his rematch with the heavyweight king.

“If he leave like that, I don’t want that,” Gane said. “I want my rematch. I want to do this fight a second time. I want this fight. I want this rematch.”

That sentiment was also shared by Gane’s manager, MMA Factory chief Fernand Lopez, who pitched the rematch for the promotion’s first France-held card.

But after some time away from the wild world of mixed martial arts, “Bon Gamin” has had a slight change of heart. For the Paris native, the goal is the gold, no matter who it’s in the possession of.

“I’m okay (if I never fight Francis again). There were a few months where, yeah, it was a little bit (like), ‘No, I want Francis.’ But anyway now, I just want the belt. This is my goal,” said Gane. “I just want to go to the top. No matter if it’s (Curtis) Blaydes or Stipe (Miocic) or (Jon) Jones or Francis, anyway.”

With Ngannou’s injury and uncertain future, the heavyweight division is somewhat up in the air right now. As talk of Jones’ heavyweight debut coming in an interim title bout with former champ Miocic persists, Gane is targeting a shot at the possible interim belt with a victory over the fast-rising Tuivasa.

And given how France’s leading MMA practitioner has shut down powerhouses Derrick Lewis and Jairzinho Rozenstruik inside the Octagon, he’ll likely enter UFC Paris as the heavy favorite on September 3.

Would you like to see Ciryl Gane and Francis Ngannou share the Octagon again down the line?

Ciryl Gane is eying an interim UFC heavyweight title fight if he gets past Tai Tuivasa.

Gane will take on Tuivasa at the UFC’s France debut on September 3. It will be Gane’s first fight back since losing his UFC heavyweight title opportunity against ex-teammate Francis Ngannou.

The former interim UFC heavyweight champion dropped his unification bout with Ngannou at UFC 270 in January. Now, he’ll take on Tuivasa, the No. 3-ranked heavyweight in the UFC currently on a five-fight win streak.

Speaking to Daily Star Sport, Gane discussed what he’d like next with a potential win over Tuivasa. He appears to have his eye on an interim title fight due to Ngannou’s current contract issues with the UFC.

“I don’t know what is the exact plan for the UFC, but for me, I think the next fight for my career will be an interim title fight.

“Of course, at the moment Francis has the belt, and there is also Stipe Miocic versus Jon Jones. My mission, my goal remains to go for the belt, and I hope I win this fight against Tuivasa and after we progress.”

Gane’s loss to Ngannou in January marked the first of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career. With a big win over Tuivasa, Gane certainly could make the case for an interim title fight if Ngannou still hasn’t settled his negotiations with the UFC.

Or, perhaps, he could be first in line to welcome Ngannou back to the Octagon upon his return.

Ciryl Gane, Tai Tuivasa

Ciryl Gane is scheduled to take on Tai Tuivasa in UFC’s first outing in Paris.

Former UFC interim Heavyweight title holder Ciryl Gane will face off against the rising prospect Tai Tuivasa in the headlining match of UFC Fight Night Paris on September 3. Gane is reeling off the first professional loss of his career in his latest unification bout with the reigning division champ Francis Ngannou.

Meanwhile, Tuivasa will be going into the cage after racking up a five-fight win streak. He dispatched all five of his previous opponents by a knockout or a technical knockout with a notable win against Derrick Lewis in February. The third-ranked contender in the division gets a significant level up in competition and is likely to get an inch closer to the gold if he comes out on top over the top contender.

Ciryl Gane vs. Tai Tuivasa officially announced

UFC officially announced the matchup on Twitter this Wednesday.

It was previously reported that the UFC was working on a big show in Europe. Talks of the rumored matchup were ongoing but the company hadn’t made any official statements until the tweet.

Gane gets to fight in his hometown for the first time

For the first time ever since the legalization of MMA in France in Jan 2020, Ciryl Gane will get to compete in front of his hometown this September. Gane is widely considered to be one of the most athletic fighters, especially at heavyweight where the athletes don’t necessarily have a fast movement.

Prior to his loss to “The Predator”, Gane was on a seven-fight win streak in the UFC that saw him defeat Derrick Lewis, Alexander Volkov, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, and Junior dos Santos.

Gane opened as the favorite against Ngannou in their title unification bout but was unsuccessful in securing the title. His outing with Tuivasa is being looked at as a title eliminator matchup where the winner will either likely get a shot at the strap or go through a top contender bout.
