Former UFC Heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos has continued to question the legality of his loss to Ciryl Gane at UFC 256.

Speaking to MMAFighting, Dos Santos shared a long thorough interview where he shared his thoughts on the fight itself and the stoppage that ended the bout in the first.

“The way things happened in the end of the fight gets me reflecting a lot, I can’t quite accept it. Not just the way it was, but mainly because of people in the business have said about that. Not that I couldn’t get knocked out, none of that. Quite the opposite, I’ve always accepted my defeats with humbleness,” Dos Santos said to MMA Fighting.

The former Heavyweight champion continued recognizing that in the heavyweight division it is “where the hand lands and the person goes down,” although he remains frustrated at “MMA Specialists” who continue to call the finishing elbow a legal blow.

During the fight, Gane appeared to stagger Dos Santos with a strike that saw him aggressively pursue Dos Santos to the cage. Once against the cage, Gane landed a massive elbow that was enough to see the ref call the fight. Immediately after the stoppage, Dos Santos protested the blow stating that it was to the back of the head. Upon viewing of the replay, both the commission and commentary team pointed out that due to the shot connecting the ear it would be counted as a legal strike and so the finish would still stand.

Another defense for the stoppage was that Dos Santos had turned his head shortly before the blow causing it to hit the back of his head, however, Dos Santos disputes this claim stating that he had already been in the position for some time before the blow was landed.

With this being Dos Santos’s fourth consecutive knockout loss in the last 18 months the former champion appears concerned with his position in the company stating that while he has five fights remaining on his contract “that doesn’t mean anything.”

“Our contract with the UFC can end whenever they want. I think they have the intention to let many fighters go now. I don’t know how it will go. I think that’s on them.” Dos Santos shared with MMA Fighting.

Junior dos Santos still hopes to become UFC heavyweight champion again.

The Brazilian is currently enduring the first three-fight losing streak of his career following TKO defeats at the hands of Francis Ngannou, Curtis Blaydes and Jairzinho Rozenstruik.

Dos Santos is now set to take on promising heavyweight prospect Ciryl Gane on the main card of UFC 256 this weekend. There is plenty of hype with Gane and that’s something “JDS” can relate to as he sees similarities between the Frenchman and himself.

“He’s a different type of heavyweight,” Dos Santos told MMA Junkie. “He’s like me. He moves very well. He’s very light for his weight. He deals very well with his own size, so that’s why I’m saying it’s gonna be a very interesting fight, because this guy is dangerous.

“He already submitted some people showing some ground game, as well, so no doubt this fight will be very interesting for the fans, and I’m happy to be there fighting against someone that everybody is considering the next big name in the heavyweight division.”

While dos Santos is on a losing run, he is still the biggest test Gane has faced yet and a huge step up from his last fight. Whether he’ll be able to make the step up will be known this weekend but dos Santos will not be underestimating him.

In fact, he hopes a big win would show he’s far from done with the sport.

“I don’t underestimate my opponents,” Dos Santos added. “Especially right now, I can see a lot of potential in this guy to even become the champion one day. There’s a reason why everybody is talking about him, and that’s why it’s so important for me to go there and show a little bit more of myself as a fighter because once you start having negative results, people stop believing in you.

“I know I can avoid this type of feeling in myself, but I want people to believe me, and I want to give them a great victory on Saturday night so that they can believe in me again, and believe that I will become the champion at some point again.”

Do you think dos Santos will come out on top? And can he become heavyweight champion again?

Junior dos Santos will fight against UFC Heavyweight Ciryl Gane at UFC 256 in Las Vegas. This will be the last UFC pay-per-view event of the tumultuous year of 2020.

Junior dos Santos is a UFC Legend who has fallen on hard times recently. Dos Santos hasn’t won a fight since way back in March 2019. This last win came through finishing Derrick Lewis early in the second round at UFC Fight Night 146. Subsequently, he has since gone on a three-fight losing streak. Whilst he’s faced nothing but the division’s killers, this is not a good position for any fighter to be in.

The Brazilian has been fighting the best of the best, which have all resulted in him being TKO’d. This includes being knocked out in the first round by the terrifying Francis Ngannou at UFC on ESPN in June 2019. Next he was TKO’d by Curtis Blaydes at UFC Fight Night 166 in January 2020. And most recently, dos Santos was knocked out by Jairzinho Rozenstruik at UFC 252 in August. It’s been a year to forget for ‘Cigano’ to say the least.

It will be interesting to see if the former Heavyweight Champion can get back in the winning column with his upcoming bout. However, the UFC matchmakers haven’t been going easy on him. Dos Santos is set to fight the undefeated Cyril Gane next. Gane holds a record of 6-0 and is also the former TKO Heavyweight Champion.

The Frenchman holds 3 wins in the UFC, but is yet to compete in 2020. These victories include two submission wins over Raphael Pessoa and Don’Tale Mayes and a decision win over Tanner Boser in 2019.

Do you think Junior dos Santos gets the win? Or will Ciryl Gane propel his career with a win over the UFC Legend?
