Claressa Shields

Undefeated professional boxing world champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and recent mixed martial arts newcomer, Claressa Shields has shared her thoughts on last weekend’s WBC heavyweight championship trilogy bout between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder — describing the pair’s trio of tussles as one of the greatest trilogies in the sport’s long and esteemed history.

Shields, who is a three-division world champion, has clutched the likes of WBC, WBA, and IBF world titles, and scooped two separate gold medals at the 2012 and 2016 summer Olympic Games in London and Rio de Janeiro, respectively at the middleweight limit.

The Flint, Michigan native recently made her long-awaited transition to the professional mixed martial arts realm, signing a multi-year deal to link up with the PFL (Professional Fighters League).

Shields made her professional and promotional debut at PFL 4 in June in Atlantic City, New Jersey — stopping Brittany Elkin with ground strikes in the third round. Shields was scheduled to return at two separate events under the organization’s banner back in August until she was finally penciled in to match with Abigail Montes at PFL 10 on October 27. coming.

Claressa Shields Heaps Praise On Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder Championship Trilogy

Despite her transition to the mixed martial arts world, Shields has still kept her ear close to the surface in regards to the boxing world, reflecting on last week’s trilogy bout between Fury and Wilder. And described their trio of clashes as one of the best trilogies in the sport’s antiquity — praising the heart on display from both.

Of course, I was going for Deontay Wilder, he showed so much heart,” Claressa Shields told LowKick MMA reporter, Darnel Giovani. “Tyson Fury, man — just a very, very good boxer — very, he got a lot of heart too. He was the better man, you know, on the third fight. But I was still kinda hurt for Deontay Wilder because that’s who I was cheering for, that’s who I wanted to win.

It was a great trilogy, you know what I mean,” Claressa Shields continued. “I’m tryna think of guys who I’ve seen in boxing, fight three times, and I think that that was definitely, one of the best that I’ve seen.”

Despite the eleventh round knockout loss to Fury, Shields has claimed that Wilder should be proud of his performance, and believes he showed many improvements and can build off that fight.

Deontay can build off of that — off of that performance, you know,” Claressa Shields said. “From the last fight, I think with Fury when he got knocked out in the seventh round, to being knocked out in the eleventh. I mean, he showed so many improvements. The only thing he needs to fix is his gas tank and just some better defense. But other than that, he made so many great improvements and that’s down to his hard work and to his new coach, Malik Scott.

One of the greatest boxers in the history of boxing regardless of gender, Claressa Shields, has a lot to say in the aftermath of her earlier comments regarding if she’d ever consider being on the undercard of a Jake Paul fight.

It’s safe to say that is not an option for the boxer-turned MMA fighter.

Shields is scheduled to fight Abigail Montes at PFL 10 on Oct. 27th, in her second fight in the cage. She earned a come-from-behind win over Brittney Elkin at PFL 4 earlier this year.

Shields spoke with LowKickMMA’s Darnel Giovani about her career, but also elaborated on her earlier comments regarding Jake Paul. During a recent PFL press conference, Shields treated the idea of her fighting underneath a Paul bout as an insult to her prowess in the ring.

“I got an offer to be on Jake Paul’s undercard, and I turned it down,” Shields told LowKickMMA. “With all I am and what I represent, I would never do it. I hold value to where Jake Paul’s fans pay to watch him, but my fans pay to watch me. And when I’m not at the top of the bill, you’re not going to get your fair share of the pay-per-view buys. For some women in boxing though, that’s a big opportunity for them.”

“I’ve never been allowed to be at the top of a pay-per-view card when I’ve earned that right,” Shields continued. “Not to get my opportunity, and if I were to fight on the undercard of Jake Paul, it would be a f*cking slap in the face. Imma do it on my own, I don’t need him.”

Claressa Shields is considered to be the greatest female boxer of all-time

Shields is known for her striking but got the chance to show off her development with her grappling in her debut win over Elkin. Paul continues to be one of the most polarizing personalities in combat sports and is expected to fight Tommy Fury in his next boxing outing.

Shields hasn’t eliminated the idea of returning to her roots in boxing in the future, and could potentially be given another offer to fight on a card featuring the Paul brothers. Whether or not she would ever consider that venture remains to be seen, but it sounds like she’s laser-focused on her development as a mixed martial artist.

Claressa Shields wishes she turned to MMA sooner due to the state of women’s boxing.

Shields is one of the best female boxers as she’s the undisputed champion in two weight classes and has held titles in three weight classes. She also is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, but despite being 11-0 in boxing she recently transitioned to MMA and signed with the PFL. For Shields, she says she wishes she made that switch sooner in her career.

“I feel like I wouldn’t have switched over if I could become a household name in boxing,” Shields told MMA Junkie. “I feel like I did everything I could do in boxing to be that household name and get that million dollar check. Even with all my accomplishments, it’s still not enough. That just pissed me off in general. But I decided that you know, instead of retiring from boxing and saying, ‘F this sport,’ I’m going to keep defending my titles in boxing.

“But I’m going to use my youth of 26 and see what I can do by the age of 32 – see if I can become MMA champion and a household name in MMA,” Shields continued. “I’ve already become a household name in MMA in the past few months just off one fight. So I should’ve started doing MMA way sooner. In boxing, you can only get so far and get so much notoriety, but in MMA it’s limitless.”

Why Claressa Shields wishes she went to MMA sooner is due to how they promote women’s fights compared to boxing. In boxing, women rarely headline shows and they only fight two-minute rounds which Shields believes is sexist.

Shields is also not the only female boxer to say something about it. She also did a women’s only pay-per-view to prove women can sell fights. However, it appears her focus will be on MMA from here on it.

“It’s sexist for people to say that (women can’t sell) without giving up the opportunity,” Shields said. “That’s the thing. Start giving women the opportunity, start getting the numbers. And if women don’t sell, whatever if they don’t sell, do your job and promote the fights. Build the story. Have the girls push each other at weigh-ins and sh*t. Do your job. That’s what you’re supposed to do.

“But they feel in women’s boxing that that’s impossible. How is it impossible if women in MMA are doing it? I think guys at the top who don’t want to cut the check, they’re just saying all this stuff so they can save money. ‘Women can’t do this. Women can’t do that. That’s going to lose us money,’ when it’s not,” Shields concluded.

Claressa Shields fights in the Professional Fighting League (PFL) on Oct. 27, even though she is busy preparing, the ex-boxer is still confident she can put a beating on Jake Paul.

Making the move from boxing to MMA, Claressa Shields has made the most of her short transition into her new sport. After signing with the PFL, the former WBF and WBC champion represented her craft in MMA when she took on Brittney Elkin in June.

The fight was frantic, and the wrestling of Shields was put to the test. While the former boxing champ found herself in trouble, she gathered her composure and earned the victory by TKO. As her first MMA fight, the round-three victory was especially impressive because the former boxer finished the fight with ground and pound on the canvas.

After the smoke cleared from the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley Showtime boxing match, Shields found the contest disrespectful. At the PFL’s Official Press Conference on Wednesday, (Sept. 29, 2021), Shields elaborated on why she won’t fight Paul and also added that she would never fight on his undercard, either.

“Don’t disrespect me. I would never fight on an undercard of Jake Paul. I’m a three-time division world champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist in boxing. I would never fight on an undercard of Jake Paul. And I don’t know what Amanda Serrano’s purse was, I think it was like $75,000, $100,000, I would never fight another boxing match for that much money because I’m worth so much more. I’m a $1 million fighter. And before I get on the undercard of a guy that’s having a circus show—no disrespect to Tyron Woodley; no disrespect to Jake Paul, but I’m a real boxer. Shields said.

“Like, I can beat up Jake Paul at the weight class I’m at right now. So no, I would never fight on an undercard of somebody that does not possess the skills or the accomplishments that I have.”

With the accolades of Shields, the former boxing champ is adamant that she will never fight on the undercard of Jake Paul. The 26-year-old emphasized her status as an Olympian and her disinterest in the ‘circus show.’ Recently, former UFC champion Tyron Woodley has been attempting to entice Paul into another mega boxing match. Over the weekend, the former 170-pound champ finally got the ‘I Love Jake Paul’ tattoo, and if you haven’t seen it yet, you can find that right here.

Do you think Claressa Shields can beat Jake Paul in a boxing match?
