TJ Dillashaw Breaks Down Cody Garbrandt’s Mistakes After UFC 227 Win

TJ Dillashaw had some harsh words for Cody Garbrandt.

It didn’t take long for UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw, who scored a first round KO victory over Cody Garbrandt in the main event of Saturday’s (August, 4, 2018) UFC 227 pay-per-view event at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, to break down the mistakes that the former champion made in their second meeting inside of the Octagon.

If you recall, their first fight went down at the UFC 217 pay-per-view event at Madison Square Garden in New York City in November where Dillashaw finished Garbrandt to win back the bantamweight title.

The finish of the fight at UFC 227 saw Dillashaw land ferocious flurry in the first round following dropping Garbrandt at first with a right hook, which came as no surprise to Dillashaw as he noted to the media after the fight that he knew in their first fight that Garbrandt had a poor chin and believes it was proven again Saturday.

“I think he has some technical problems that he needs to fix,” Dillashaw said at UFC 227’s post-fight press conference (transcript courtesy of MMAFighting). “And I really don’t believe he’s got a chin. He plays a dangerous game. He likes to get in there and he likes to slug it.”

“We were planning on him throwing a right hand,” Dillashaw said. “Every time he throws a right hand, he drops his left. He’s looking to throw a left hook. He’s fast. He throws a big right, left hand. But he drops it to his pocket. So were planning on timing it.”

“It wasn’t anything in sparring,” Dillashaw said. “Cody was coming into the team as I was leaving, so we didn’t really get to work out as much as has been in the media. It was more when I hit him in the first fight with my foot. I dropped him with that left kick. I didn’t feel like that left kick had anything on it, but it affected him.”

When Garbrandt won the bantamweight title at UFC 207, it set up a rivalry fight for one of the hottest feuds in MMA over the past couple of years, and the two fighters had been jawing at each other publicly since Dillashaw left Alpha Male. Due to their bad blood and with the belief that Garbrandt can rebound, it’s likely we see a third fight between these two stars.

Cody Garbrandt: TJ Dillashaw Is A “Mental Midget”

Cody Garbrandt made it personal with his longtime rival TJ Dillashaw:

Former Team Alpha Male teammates-turned-rivals Cody Garbrandt and TJ Dillashaw simply don’t like each other. The two have engaged in trash talk ever since the lead up to their first fight at UFC 217.

Now, the two are slated to fight again at UFC 227, and the bickering has already started.

Garbrandt (11-1) said the current bantamweight champion is spoiled and hasn’t overcome real adversity during Monday’s edition of The MMA Hour (via MMA Mania):

“T.J. wants to go in there and talk all kinds of shit saying that I don’t deserve this and that, and he worked two years to get it back. He feels like he’s entitled because he’s been living with a silver spoon, getting spoon fed with that thing.”

“He’s never had to overcome any adversity. Hats off to him for being able to come back and get me in the fight, but (we’ll see) come August 4. He can talk all the shit he wants, I’m focused on my book doing well, hopefully it inspires and motivates people around the world.”

Since losing the belt to Dillashaw at UFC 217, “No Love” has become a father and written a book “The Pact,” and has relentlessly skewered Dillashaw (15-3) at every opportunity possible.

Garbrandt appears to be brimming with confidence leading into their highly anticipated rematch, yet still managed to slight Dillashaw in the process:

“He’s kind of a mental midget, he’s got to have those coaches around him, people like that are ‘yes men’ to fill his head. I’m excited for this fight.

“It’s (like he thinks it’s) going to be the Barao fight. I will tell you now, I am no Barao and he knows that. He knows I can keep it up from the first round to the fifth round, the way I whooped his ass like that. He is going to be in for a long night.”

Does Garbrandt have a point about TJ Dillashaw? Or is he just talking trash to a heated rival?

The bad blood between two-time UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and Team Alpha Male continues.

Dillashaw knocked out his former training partner Cody Garbrandt to win the UFC bantamweight title at the UFC 217 PPV (pay-per-view) event in New York at Madison Square Garden.

They have been feuding as part of a long-standing beef between Dillashaw and Team Alpha Male, which is where he used to train at. It all started when Dillashaw decided to leave the gym years earlier.

Although Dillashaw’s victory closed that particular chapter in the rivalry, the bad blood might not be over just yet.

During a recent Q&A session with fans at the MetroPCS UFC 217 Live event, Team Alpha Male’s founder and UFC Hall of Famer Urijah Faber stated in a response to a fight fan that a fight against Dillashaw could get him interested in a comeback.

Despite the fact that Faber is one of the best bantamweight fighters to ever compete under the UFC banner, Dillashaw isn’t worried about fighting his old coach.

“That’s hilarious man,” Dillashaw said during a recent episode of BJ Penn Radio. “It sounds like the easiest payday ever. I mean it’s just comical. I mean come out of retirement, get a title shot off of what, losing to Jimmy Rivera and looking like crap in his fights? I mean it’s hilarious.

But like I said, it’d be an easy payday, so I guess I shouldn’t be laughing at it. I should be pumping him up.”

Faber decided to hang up his gloves last December in his hometown of Sacramento. As for the reasons for his retirement, it was due to a waning passion for the actual fights as well as still having his health.

Since then, he has stayed busy by doing commentary work on the Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series Snoopcast and remaining an integral part of Team Alpha Male as both coach and training partner.
