The next UFC welterweight title fight is finally set. Champion Kamaru Usman will make his first career title defense against ex-interim champion Colby Covington. The pair will headline UFC 245 on pay-per-view (PPV) on December 14.

One man who is very familiar with both competitors is former 170-pound king Tyron Woodley. Woodley has fought Usman for five rounds – ultimately losing the welterweight crown to “The Nigerian Nightmare” – and is a former training partner of Covington.

Speaking on his “Hollywood Beatdown” segment for TMZ, Woodley explained why he believes Usman has a slight advantage over “Chaos” in the matchup. (H/T MMA Junkie)

“I think Usman’s scrambling abilities are better than Colby’s as far as once you get to a leg,” Woodley said. “Anytime you get to a single leg versus two legs, it’s always a scramble involved. So when you watch Kamaru Usman – like, my teammate Michael Chandler is his training partner – when you watch those guys scramble, going around, this is high-level scrambling.

“I think Usman has a slight edge that is annoying and frustrating to deal with and if he can’t get space, he may not be able to punch Colby, and that takes his advantage in striking away.”

It’s no secret that Woodley and Covington have a heated rivalry with one another, which hopefully gets settled inside the Octagon one day. However, Woodley gives respect where it’s due, praising Covington for his relentless cardio and motor.

Of course, Woodley notes Covington isn’t one to throw power shots, which likely plays into why he conserves so much gas in his tank.

“I think he really, really has a good motor,” Woodley said. “I think he’s in good shape. But it’s not like he’s in good shape because he’s landing explosive, powerful combinations. He’s not exerting his body, throwing powerful shots. He actually punched like he’s swinging little Ottoman cushions around. But when you really think about it, he never has to explode.”

What do you think about Woodley’s breakdown of Usman vs. Covington?

Michael Bisping and Colby Covington have had their fair share of back-and-forth interactions. But even “The Count” can give credit when it’s due.

It was recently announced that Covington would get his long-awaited welterweight title shot when he challenges Kamaru Usman in the main event of UFC 245 in December. It followed over a year of failed negotiations and protests from Covington.

Most recently, “Chaos” rejected a contract and called the UFC’s negotiations “slave labor” as well. However, things changed shortly afterwards as the fight was finally booked.

And for Bisping, that means Covington was vindicated:

“I’ve done a pretty good job of sh*tting all over Colby Covington, but now I’m gonna retract my statements because he played it well,” Bisping said on his podcast (via MMA News). “‘Cause I said, ‘alright he wanted the title fight forever, but he turned it down.’ He was supposed to fight Woodley, but apparently he was injured. So there was that whole thing, so it didn’t make Colby look good.

“Then they offered him Kamaru Usman, apparently turned it down cause he wanted more money. Then they offered him Tyron Woodley and he turned that down. Now he’s fighting Usman after all at the end-of-the-year show.”

Bisping can also understand why Covington turned down a reported Woodley fight — especially as it would have been far more riskier than waiting on getting a title fight made:

“To be honest, now it looks like Colby played it correctly because he’s got the title fight,” Bisping continued. “So number one, I understand him turning down the Woodley fight. Why you gonna take Woodley on? Woodley’s a tough fight for anybody. He’s a very, very tough fight. He was the champion up until very, very recently. So if they offer you a title fight because the money wasn’t right, for the UFC to then offer you Woodley that doesn’t make sense for Covington.

Now I was quick to throw him under a bus and say, ‘this guy doesn’t wanna fight anybody.’ But it seems like perhaps, and I don’t know this is no circle of trust issues here, one would assume that they went back to the negotiating table and all parties are happy.”

What do you make of Bisping’s comments?

Colby Covington will finally be fighting for the title as he gets to settle his business when he takes on Kamaru Usman at UFC 245. The two do not like each other and have had a feud going on for quite some time now.

Both of them said the other one was not accepting the fight and ducking each other. Yet, on Dec. 14 at UFC 245, the two will finally meet where Colby Covington expects to hear ‘And New’ as he envisions knocking out the champion.

“I see a third-round knockout finish. He’s not going to last in the late rounds and he’s going to find out really quick that he’s not as good as he thinks he is. He sucks at fighting, he’s had an easy road to get there. He came in and beat all my sloppy seconds and now he thinks he’s God,” Colby Covington said to James Lynch of theScore MMA (h/t BJPENN.com). “Now he’s running into God, and he’s going to find out on Dec. 14, he will be finished inside three rounds. Mark my words you heard it here first [with] James Lynch, take it to the bank.”

Whether or not that happens is to be seen. But, Colby Covington is confident he will be too much for Kamaru Usman and hand him another loss as he becomes the welterweight champion.
