This past weekend, UFC Newark took place from the Prudential Center in New Jersey. In the main event, Colby Covington picked up a dominant victory over former champion Robbie Lawler.
Now, Covington has solidified himself as the next challenger for Kamaru Usman’s championship. We have a UFC rankings update to pass along after the Newark event. Following Covington’s big win, he remains still at the No. 2-ranked position in the Las Vegas-based promotion’s 170-pound rankings.

Colby Covington is next in line to fight Kamaru Usman for the UFC welterweight title. However, the next man up after “Chaos” already seems to be set.
Earlier today, Leon Edwards claimed that Jorge Masvidal turned down a fight with him. However, Masvidal’s manager, Ibrahim Kawa, took to Twitter and labeled such claims as “fake news.” Kawa called the Englishman’s comments a “desperate” attempt and claimed Masvidal already has a title shot negotiated.
“#fakenews we were never offered a fight with Leon as we already negotiated a title shot after the askren win. This is a desperate attempt. Yes Jorge next fight is for the title. as for “demands” it can’t be a demand if it was already agreed to before he fought askren. Thanks”
Edwards responded to Kawa’s claims and called him a liar, claiming he was trying to “protect your boy.”
“shut your lying mouth you fat f*ck. stop trying to protect your boy and stop your desperate attempts to be tough on twitter your quiet as a mouse in person”
A fan pointed out on Twitter that Covington has already been promised the next shot at Usman. Kawa acknowledged this before noting that, just because Covington is next in line, doesn’t mean Masvidal’s next fight won’t be for the title.
“He is. We knew this and are ok with it. Jorge next fight will be for the title. Doesn’t mean he is next for the title”

UFC welterweight Mike Perry was not entirely impressed with Colby Covington’s performance this past weekend.
Covington comfortably outpointed Robbie Lawler to win a unanimous decision in the UFC Newark headliner. In the process, he attempted a UFC record 533 strikes during the 25-minute bout.
However, that only showed how much power he lacked according to Perry, who tweeted out his thoughts during the event:
Perry expanded when asked about his tweets:
“Whatever, I don’t think he punches with any power,” Perry told media recently. “He never explodes. If I hit someone 600 times, it might be the first death in the Octagon. It only takes 60 for me. So 10 percent of what Colby did, if I did 10 percent of that, I smash him.“
In fairness, Covington did not land 533 strikes — that was only his attempted strike total. But even still, he was able to come away with the win and is now in line to face Kamaru Usman for the welterweight title.
Both fighters have used their wrestling to dominate their opponents and it’s something Perry is working on himself so that he can utilize his striking:
“Yeah, it’s a good fight,” he said of Usman vs. Covington. “It’s two wrestlers. I see the sport in a different light these days. That light is, I see it as wrestling first. You have to subdue what these guys want to do which is either get the takedown or shy away from you, run and then get into the clinch and try to get the takedown, get on top of you and stall time.
“That’s what they want to do and I’ve been working many ways on how to shut that down and open up my own game of striking.“
Perry takes on Vicente Luque in the co-main event of UFC Uruguay on Saturday.

Colby Covington believes his American Top Team teammate in Jorge Masvidal would have no problem getting past Conor McGregor.
Covington recently defeated Robbie Lawler at UFC Newark this past weekend and is all but guaranteed to get the next shot at Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title. However, there were calls for Masvidal to get the title shot, given his recent wins.
If Masvidal was not given a title shot, him and his team wanted a money fight with McGregor instead. Right now, it doesn’t look like either will be happening, but more so the welterweight title shot. But if Masvidal were to face the Irishman, that works out for Covington:
“Absolutely [that works],” Covington told Submission Radio. “He knew that title shot was never his all along. We’re one of the best dynamic duos in the history of MMA, but let’s get it right, we are the Batman and Robin – of course I’m Batman and he’s Robin, but you guys know what I mean.“
Covington would then give his prediction for the fight:
“…He would piece up Conor for sure,” he explained. “No doubt about it. Conor’s too small. He’s a little guy and you know, this and that. So, that’s that, but you know, 170, we’re not talking about that, we’re talking about Marty Fakenewsman and we’re talking about that receding hairline that he has. He’s losing that hairline faster than he’s about to lose that number one contender Power Ranger belt. The guy’s on borrowed time right now, boys.”

All everyone has been talking about since the conclusion of UFC Newark this past weekend was Colby Covington’s train insult directed at Matt Hughes. However, Chael Sonnen has suggested they both may have been in on it.
Following his win over Robbie Lawler, Covington decided to take a shot at Hughes — who is notably a mentor and close friend to Lawler — about his train accident back in 2017.
“Let’s talk about the lesson we learned tonight,” Covington said. “It’s a strong lesson that Robbie should’ve learned from his good buddy Matt Hughes. You stay off the tracks when the train’s coming through, junior. Don’t matter if there’s a Trump train or the Colby train, get out the way!”
Many were appalled by the comment, though to his credit, Hughes was cool about the barb. But his response leads Sonnen to believe that he may have been in on it, particularly given his relationship with Dan Lambert — Covington’s manager as well as the owner of American Top Team.
“I am inclined to believe that whether I’m right or not, that there’s a likelihood that Matt was in on it,” Sonnen said. “A likelihood that Matt was tipped off ahead of time [by Covington]… Matt got a chuckle and gave it support. I don’t have evidence of that.
“But Matt Hughes in real life is best friends with Dan Lambert. Dan Lambert is not only Colby’s manager and mentor — Dan owns the American Top Team. So I don’t believe that Colby would be able to just go out and insult with such a dirty line. I don’t believe he would go out and do that to Matt Hughes, unless there was a little discussion ahead of time. None of which I can prove happened. But that was my takeaway.“
