Ariel Helwani gave us all some exciting news yesterday, as he enlightened us of the potential return of Nick Diaz. It would be great to see him come back, he left us all wanting more when he walked away.

“This is Nick Diaz earlier today. He weighs in the 175-165 pound range, per his manager Kevin Mubenga. He just completed a 14-week diet and training regimen. This is the first time he cuts weight in approximately four years, Mubenga said. Diaz wanted to do a test cut because …

“… he is keeping a close eye on the big welterweight fights coming up. He is “100%” planning on fighting again, per Mubenga, and is targeting an early 2021 return.”

Former Bellator and ONE Championship Welterweight Champion Ben Askren made a comment on the Stockton natives plan to return:

“There are some guys people will watch no matter what! Even if they haven’t won a fight in almost a decade. I’m in for a Diaz comeback.”

We thought maybe we’d get to see him come back this year, as he stated that he wanted to return around the time his brother fought Jorge Masvidal in an interview with Ariel Helwani.

On Diaz’s social media over the last few years, it didn’t look like he’d been doing much with his life or career aside from partying. Of course he’s still training, he’s a true martial artist, but he was living the party life there for a while. He’d gained some weight, and every time we heard him talk, he sounded drunk.

Diaz has always spoken a bit differently than most, he and Nate both do, but it’d gotten worse. He slurred his words often, ranted about meaningless topics, went off topic during his rants, it was kind of sad to see. Now it looks like he’s motivated for a comeback, and this is great news!

Diaz hasn’t fought since January of 2015, and he wasn’t the most active upon returning to the UFC. He had two fights in four months against BJ Penn and Carlos Condit, but didn’t fight Georges St-Pierre until 13-and-a-half months after the Condit fight, and didn’t fight Anderson Silva until almost two years after his St-Pierre fight.

We never got to see how good Diaz really was, he got suspended too many times, then just left the sport at only 31 years of age. He was at his best, in his prime years, and it just didn’t work out for him. It’s so unfortunate seeing wasted talents, and he and his brother both are at least to some extent.

After being away for so long, he shouldn’t be fighting a top guy, but we all know how the Diaz’s are. If they aren’t getting someone with a name, they won’t sign the contract. It wasn’t always like that of course, but later on in their careers it has been.

It’ll be very interesting and exciting to see how this plays out.

Anthony Johnson Talks UFC Return At BKFC 12 Press Conference

Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson is finally making his return to the UFC octagon after over three years away, despite how he feels about fighters not knowing when to walk away. Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson is finally making his return to the UFC octagon after over three years away, despite how he feels about fighters not knowing when to walk away. The former two-time UFC light-heavyweight title challenger retired after his second defeat to Daniel Cormier at UFC 210 in April of 2017.

Since retiring, Johnson began bodybuilding, and not long after became an ambassador for Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC). But now he’s got the itch again, and at 36-years-old, he doesn’t have much time left to make a comeback. More or less, now’s the perfect time.

The one very unfortunate thing about this however, Jon Jones announced he’s vacating his UFC Light-Heavyweight Championship, and that’s one dream fight we never got to see.

‘Rumble’ was supposed to face Jones for the title at UFC 187 in May of 2015, but this was one of the many times Jones got suspended, and he ended up facing Daniel Cormier instead. We’ve seen twice that Cormier’s the better man, but he’s not around anymore either, and Johnson’s the scariest light-heavyweight this sport has seen.

That doesn’t mean he’s the most technical or best fighter out there, but the pure raw power he possesses is truly scary. Of his 22 wins, he has 16 knockouts and six decisions, and ten of those knockout wins were KO’s. Better yet, he went 6-2 in his recent return to the UFC and scored five knockouts with four KO’s then, with the only TKO being over Alexander Gustafsson.

His manager, Ali Abdelaziz announced that he’s back in the USADA testing pool, which means he’ll be eligible to compete soon.

If he can come back at his best, it’s going to be incredibly exciting to see what happens, the 205 lb division is thriving beautifully right now. When asked at the BKFC 12 press conference earlier today why now is the right time to return to the UFC, ‘Rumble’ had the following to say on the matter:

“Honestly, I missed the sport, you know what I mean? I missed the sport, I miss competing. So I knew at one point, I was against guys coming back from retirement. You know, you usually see them get mopped up. You know, BJ Penn came back and got mopped up. I’ve seen everybody that came back out of retirement get mopped up.

“I just don’t wanna be one of those guys that gets mopped up, but I still feel good, I have no injuries. While I was in the UFC, I didn’t really get hit much unless I lost, and that wasn’t often. But, you never know. You know, I got a couple more fights on my contract with the UFC, and then after that you know, I may fight for Dave (Feldman).”

An action-packed welterweight affair is reportedly set for UFC 232.

Source reportedly confirmed to ESPN tonight that former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit will meet former lightweight contender Michael Chiesa at December 29’s pay-per-view from Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight is set to be Chiesa’s debut at 170 pounds. ‘Maverick’ recently ditched the draining cut to lightweight after a frightening cut at July’s UFC 226. Chiesa was submitted by top contenders Anthony Pettis and Kevin Lee in his last two fights at lightweight. It’s been a trying year for Chiesa after his first bout with Pettis was delayed by Conor McGregor’s bus attack.

The TUF contract winner currently has a lawsuit pending for the ordeal. Chiesa still has to get paid to fight. He’ll have no easy task in perennial top contender Condit.

Once one of the most feared competitors at welterweight, Condit has now lost four fights in a row. They were against top competition like Robbie Lawler, Demian Maia, Neil Magny, and Alex Oliveira. Condit was submitted by Oliveira and Maia.

It promises to be a challenging, telling bout for Condit. We’ve seen many fighters like Rafael dos Anjos and Robert Whittaker go up in weight and find immediate success. Chiesa needs to pick up a win in the worst way. That means it will also be a wholly telling bout for him. The weight cut could enable him to finally fight to his full potential. He could also find himself over his head in a much bigger weight class.

UFC 232 features Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes for the women’s featherweight title, but the main event has not been officially confirmed.

Anthony Pettis: Analyzing the Mental Road Toward a Comeback

This isn’t the first time Anthony Pettis has lost. He does have two losses under his belt, so he has proven he has been able to bounce back. However, there is something different about this loss.
