Following the narrow loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ toyed with the idea of retirement. Eight months on ‘NBK’ returned to possibly the most difficult fight available.

Demian Maia turned the UFC on FOX 21 main event in to a grappling clinic. ‘The Natural Born Killer’ wasn’t able to get warm as the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace got the first round submission. The fight was nothing like the thrilling wars we’ve become accustomed to with Condit. After the main event done in Vancouver, questions about Condit’s future were rife once again.

Will Carlos Condit Retire?

If Carlos Condit does indeed decide to retire, it will be a sad day for MMA. Condit had stated he wanted UFC gold before calling it a day, but talk of moving in to the real estate business and settling down with his family underlies another possibly more attractive option. Talking during the post-fight presser North of the border, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ said he is still undecided on where to go next. As quoted by MMAJunkie.com.

“I don’t know if I have any business fighting at this level anymore. I’ve been at this for a really long time. The pressure of kind of being one of the top guys for almost a decade, it’s been awesome to be involved in this sport as long as I have. I got to do what I love for a living for a very long time. I don’t know, man. I don’t know if I belong here anymore. We’ll see.”

Swan Song? Hopefully Not

Along with his hoards of fans, Carlos Condit is hoping this wasn’t his last fight. Every combatant would love to go out with a win, but very few have been party to so many gruelling wars as ‘NBK.’ The Greg Jackson product has seen gritty battles with Robbie Lawler, Nick Diaz Georges St-Pierre and many more. Few would blame him if it was time to call it a career. In closing, Condit says it ultimately depends on his friends and family, and a decision will be made soon.

“Honestly, I’ve had a tough career with a lot of fights and I’ve taken a lot of punishment,” Condit said. “I don’t know if I can continue to take shots, honestly. I’ll probably talk to the people around me, talk to my wife and kind of make the decision after we’ve had some discussion and a little bit of assessing where I’m going and what’s on the horizon.”

One of the most exciting UFC welterweights on the roster returns to action this weekend. Top five ranked former interim champion Carlos Condit will face Demian Maia in the UFC on FOX 21 main event. Vancouver, British Colombia in Canada will host the festivities as Condit looks to take one last run at the title. ‘NBK’ has come so close to getting UFC gold and his last fight could have gone either way. Condit’s five round war with Robbie Lawler at UFC 195 was tough to score, and many had ‘The Natural Born Killer’ winning on their scorecards.

‘Ruthless’ came away with the win, and Condit has pondered retirement in the time since. Nearly nine months on and Condit will face the toughest available challenge in the division. It wasn’t that long ago that Nick Diaz was that challenge. ‘NBK’ faced the older Diaz brother in the UFC 143 main event, winning the interim championship after a classic five round battle.

Condit’s Take on UFC 202

Carlos Condit received some negative feedback from Nick Diaz’s fans after their fight. Similarly, Conor McGregor was recently accused of ‘running’ from Nate Diaz at UFC 202. In anticipation of his return at UFC on FOX 21, Condit spoke with MMAFighting to dissect McGregor’s performance.

“Nate and Nick are like zombies. They just come forward, and you just have to make space. Where they really excel is in that close range boxing. It was kind of a bummer to see Conor gas that quickly, but on the other hand you’ve got to do what you can to win. Other people who have fought Nate have done a similar thing. Look at Josh Thompson, he wasn’t gassed when he was doing it, but he made space and got back to the centre of the cage. You don’t want to be caught against the cage with those guys, you just don’t. A lot of criticism could be made from the outside but when you’re in there you gotta do what the f*ck you gotta do to win.”

Do What You Gotta Do

Talking of the necessities of victory, Carlos Condit needs to keep the fight standing against Demian Maia. It will be interesting to see how ‘NBK’ deals with such a submission-based fighter at UFC on FOX 21. Following nine months off, will Condit still have that urge to conquer? If so, it could be a short and brutal night for Maia.

Former UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit returns to action this weekend. Headlining the August 27 UFC on FOX 21 main event against Demian Maia, ‘The Natural Born Killer’ will hope to get back on track. Following a disappointing split decision loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, Condit had briefly considered retirement. Now re-energised after nine months off, Condit’s hopes for another title run lay past a very dangerous fight.

‘Dangerous’ Demian Maia

Maia’s recent form at welterweight has been excellent. Recently submitting Matt Brown at UFC 198, the Brazilian is currently unbeaten in five. Losing his last fight and taking some time off has lead to many picking against Condit in Vancouver. ‘NBK’ recently promised blood and violence in his UFC return, but Maia is great at smothering exciting fighters.

Despite all these factors, here’s five reasons Carlos Condit will smash Demian Maia…

Former UFC interim welterweight champion and UFC on FOX 21 main event star Carlos Condit has been quite vocal lately. ‘The Natural Born Killer’ talked about a possible retirement in the near future, made an incredibly accurate prediction of the UFC 201 main event and also gave a promise of blood and violence against Demian Maia on August 27. After sitting quietly on the sidelines since his narrow loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 195, it’s refreshing to see Condit in the limelight again.

But it’s not all roses and walks on the beach in the life of a fighter. The reality is that no matter how much you enjoy to fight, the amount of responsibility and inherent dangers that come with the sport are staggering. Even for a guy like ‘NBK,’ who openly admits his passion for the fight, issues like the Reebok deal are hard to swallow.

Carlos-Condit[1]
Carlos Condit might love to fight, but he needs to live too…

The UFC’s partnership with sports apparel giants Reebok has been highly debated for so many reasons. Firstly, it seemed Reebok was unable to manufacture UFC gear without making ridiculous, racist, offensive and just obvious mistakes regarding fighter names, nationalities, styles and other easy-to-find details. This could probably have been looked on in a slightly different light had the athletes been receiving fair compensation from the deal, which they are not.

Condit joins the ranks of many other fighters right now who have growing concerns about their own sacrifice in regards to what they are paid in return, specifically from the Reebok deal.

As quoted by MMAMania.com:

“I wish that a dude like Cyborg, or any of these fighters who are putting their bodies through this and putting their health and well-being on the line, I just wish we had a little bit more security. This is his trade, he’s a fighter and this is how he makes money. Now he can’t make any money. Now what the hell is he going to do? That’s kind of how it is with all of us, so, that is the nature of the sport. Any of us can get hurt, get our faces broken. We accept that risk, but, we kind of don’t have anything to fall back on. And I was like, ‘damn, he may never fight again.’”

~Condit agrees with Mark Hunt’s fighter union~

“Something needs to be done. A big part of the Reebok deal, man, our loss in sponsors took away our security. Now we are beholden to living fight to fight and we don’t have that buffer in between in regards to financial security that sponsors gave us. So, we are in a weird place, man.”
