One of the most exciting UFC welterweights on the roster returns to action this weekend. Top five ranked former interim champion Carlos Condit will face Demian Maia in the UFC on FOX 21 main event. Vancouver, British Colombia in Canada will host the festivities as Condit looks to take one last run at the title. ‘NBK’ has come so close to getting UFC gold and his last fight could have gone either way. Condit’s five round war with Robbie Lawler at UFC 195 was tough to score, and many had ‘The Natural Born Killer’ winning on their scorecards.

‘Ruthless’ came away with the win, and Condit has pondered retirement in the time since. Nearly nine months on and Condit will face the toughest available challenge in the division. It wasn’t that long ago that Nick Diaz was that challenge. ‘NBK’ faced the older Diaz brother in the UFC 143 main event, winning the interim championship after a classic five round battle.

Condit’s Take on UFC 202

Carlos Condit received some negative feedback from Nick Diaz’s fans after their fight. Similarly, Conor McGregor was recently accused of ‘running’ from Nate Diaz at UFC 202. In anticipation of his return at UFC on FOX 21, Condit spoke with MMAFighting to dissect McGregor’s performance.

“Nate and Nick are like zombies. They just come forward, and you just have to make space. Where they really excel is in that close range boxing. It was kind of a bummer to see Conor gas that quickly, but on the other hand you’ve got to do what you can to win. Other people who have fought Nate have done a similar thing. Look at Josh Thompson, he wasn’t gassed when he was doing it, but he made space and got back to the centre of the cage. You don’t want to be caught against the cage with those guys, you just don’t. A lot of criticism could be made from the outside but when you’re in there you gotta do what the f*ck you gotta do to win.”

Do What You Gotta Do

Talking of the necessities of victory, Carlos Condit needs to keep the fight standing against Demian Maia. It will be interesting to see how ‘NBK’ deals with such a submission-based fighter at UFC on FOX 21. Following nine months off, will Condit still have that urge to conquer? If so, it could be a short and brutal night for Maia.

Building on their UFC 196 classic, McGregor and Diaz had plenty of bad blood between them. The Stockton Jiu-Jitsu ace had submitted ‘The Notorious’ on just 11 days notice, and the Irishman was desperate for revenge. Furthering their feud was the story line between both stars and the promotion.Previously Diaz had complained about low pay for years, and McGregor had his own beef with the promotion after UFC 196.

‘They Are Trying To Get Me Out Of Here’

In typical Nate Diaz fashion, the Cesar Gracie product claimed the UFC was out to get him. According to him, the promotion was unhappy with his win over Conor McGregor. That was the reason for the immediate rematch being made just days after their first fight. Once McGregor had earned the majority decision win at UFC 202, Diaz turned the tables. Requesting a trilogy fight, the popular Stockton native was shot down by UFC president Dana White.

Eventually White revealed that McGregor had a choice between defending his featherweight belt or fighting Eddie Alvarez. Clearly no prizes for guessing which option the Irish star will go for. With ‘The Notorious’ now eyeing a lightweight title bout, Diaz stated he wouldn’t fight again until he’s booked for a third time against McGregor.

Timing

Following the UFC 202 main event, Diaz landed himself in potential trouble with USADA. After being filmed blazing up CBD oil at the presser, the possibility of a mandatory ban is very real for Diaz. Responding to being shut down on his hopes of a third fight, the ever popular 209 brawler took to Instagram. Here’s what Nate Diaz had to say to Conor McGregor:

Fight day is finally here. Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz have done a great job of giving us many more reasons to tune in to UFC 202 this week. As if their rivalry wasn’t interesting enough, the two burst in to life at the pre-fight press conference this past Wednesday. Bottles of water were thrown and fingers were shown during the crazy scene in Las Vegas. UFC president Dana White later insisted both men would face ramifications from the Nevada Athletic Commission. Was it real or fake, does it even matter at this stage?

The era of money fights is truly here, and fronting that green crusade are McGregor and Diaz. It’s funny to think their paths only crossed through chance. Now they’re the most well-known pairing in UFC history. As we look forward to tonight’s big fight, the time for talk is very nearly over, but that didn’t stop Nate Diaz from firing a few last-minute shots.

Nate Diaz’s Army

The popular Stockton brawler spoke during the FOX Sports weigh-ins show, as quoted by MMAFighting.com, to send yet another warning to Conor McGregor. After the Irishman had threatened to take out Nate Diaz and his ‘bitch tits’ crew on stage, the 209 bad boy had the following response:

“Should have brought an army motherf**ker. Should have brought everybody because it’s gonna be down if we see you.”

“I’m going on 13 years in fighting now,” Diaz said. “It feels like what it feels like. I’m gonna go home and relax, chillax. I got my team here. My bro is here. Everybody is always here. But I’ve got a lot of support from people, so it’s all good. I’m just ready to go in there and do my thing. As ready as I can be.”

“It’s what it is,” Diaz said. “We weighed in, we faced off and now it’s time to go, so it’s all good. … I’m expecting a fight. Tune in, we’re gonna get down.”

After 10 years and 25 fights for the UFC, the cult heroes Nick and Nate have only just started receiving their dues. Ahead of UFC 202, the talk has centred around revenge for ‘The Notorious’ or a repeat for Diaz.

Life After UFC 196

During a sit down interview with BT Sports this week, Nate Diaz discussed life after UFC 196 and the rematch at UFC 202. Here are the best bits:

“There’s been a lot of press, it’s been good to get out there and do this stuff. The fight never ended though. They called me three days after the first fight and it was straight back in to training. With all the press and stuff, it feels like the fight hasn’t ended yet. It’s good to let people see what I’m really like, because before people would look at me like I was a maniac.”

“At this stage in my career I don’t have to fight. I just want to do the real big fights, so I can pay bills and take care of stuff outside of fighting. Am I supposed to fight for fun, because I like to hurt people? I don’t think so, I don’t like to hurt people or ruin people’s days. This fight shit is a rough life. I just want to live my life. I’ve been doing it for 25 fights now. I just want to fight for big deals, big paydays.”

Training For The Rematch

“I just do what I do. I got a lot of pro sparring partners from boxing and kickboxing. I got the best Jiu Jitsu guys in the world, I just try to be ready for everything. Ready for good positions, bad positions, I just want to be ready for war. Ready for anything that’s gonna happen, win or lose, kill or be killed. I’m just trying to keep my head on my shoulders.”

“I don’t expect to get knocked out by anybody, but I accept the fact. There’s two options in a fight–you win or you lose. You better think of every way you can win, but more importantly you should think of every way you can lose. You should be prepared so when it does happen you won’t be heart-broken.”

“I’m gonna fight this fight, then whoever wants it, they better be a big fight. People are saying all this shit like ‘oh you lost this fight,’ it’s like fuck that. You fight 25 times in the UFC and then talk. People get to fight me, they get to fight my brother Nick, we’re the big names. If you want to fight me, I don’t want to hear no Twitter call out. You better say my name loud.”

After 10 years of fighting in the UFC, Diaz was finally getting paid. He’d dominated Michael Johnson in December of 2015, using that moment to blast ‘The Notorious’ during an explicit post-fight interview. These comments would eventually lead to the UFC 196 pairing that catapulted the popular brawler in to the mainstream.

The Exchange

“I didn’t want to go on (The Ultimate Fighter). They wanted nick to go on TUF 4, it was the comeback season with Chris Lytle and Matt Serra, and he was like ‘I’m not going on that show.’ We’d already made fun of Diego Sanchez and Josh Koscheck, like ‘Why would you go on that show?’”

“Then (the UFC) called saying they wanted me on season 5. Then Nick and Cesar (Gracie) said I should go on that show. I was like ‘What? We were just making fun of this show.’ I didn’t want to go on the camera, I was anti-social, I was 20-years old at that time. I really just did it because they pay for your medical.”

Living as a fighter

“People were looking at us, the neighbourhood we came from, and we weren’t meant to make it. As a 22, 23-year old making some money it was like ‘I got a career now.’ I was able t make some money, looking at it , this whole thing is fucking crazy.”

Anticipation for the rematch between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor is at an all-time high. UFC 202 is just eight days away, and the welterweight do-over is rich with back story. After replacing Rafael dos Anjos on short notice at UFC 196, Diaz submitted McGregor in the second round of a truly enthralling scrap. As the Stockton bad boy got on the mic for a classic interview, ‘The Notorious’ remained humble although clearly disappointed. Their story was far from over though.

It didn’t take long for McGregor to demand a rematch, once again at welterweight, and the promotion threw up no resistance. The featherweight title would have to wait, as the second fight 25 pounds above his championship category beckoned. With August 20 now within touching distance, the recent headlines have been dominated by the biggest draws in MMA today.

Revenge or Repeat?

Still the same questions are being asked as when the fight was first booked–How will McGregor overcome the factors that caused him to lose first time around? It’s an interesting ponder, but one the Irishman has addressed many times since the loss. Improved cardio, bigger and higher calibre sparring partners, and overall just a more organised approach to the fight. Will these alterations lead to revenge for McGregor?

Coach John Kavanagh seems to think so. As quoted by Talk Sport, McGregor’s long time coach at Straight Blast Gym Dublin reveals his fighter;s much more calculated approach and more:

Changes

“The word we’ve been focusing on for this camp is ‘routine’,” he said. “We basically did the same thing every day since we arrived in Vegas: Leave the house to go to the gym for a skill session at 1pm, before working on cardio in the evenings”.

“Anyone who knows about the history of [Kavanagh’s mixed martial arts gym] SBG Ireland will be aware that we were always regarded as the last-minute gym — the guys who would be ready to step in at short notice… All you can do in those circumstances is try to get your skill set to such a high level that the opponent doesn’t matter.

“I believe that worked well for us and the results were proof of that, but I also feel that when you’ve done that for so long, you can end up getting caught out against certain styles of opponent. This has provided us with an opportunity to experience the other method of extreme game planning and being very opponent-orientated.

“It’s been a new approach for me, and for us all. I’d describe it as doing an exam after seeing the questions on the teacher’s test sheet. I feel like we’re almost cheating going into this fight because we know what questions we’re going to face in the test”.

We know from past experience that a motivated Nate Diaz is the most dangerous possible. Of course ‘The Notorious’ is raring to go too, making this rematch so much more intriguing.
