Former WEC and UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo nearly hung up his gloves for good after his second TKO loss to current champion Max Holloway.

Holloway has defeated Aldo twice in a row by TKO, most recently at lasts December’s UFC 218, and the second time almost pushed Aldo to retirement.

Aldo discussed his thoughts following UFC 218 and why he’s continuing to fight as he prepares for his first non-title fight in nearly a decade (via MMA Fighting):

”After the fight, I took some time for myself, to think and stay with my family. Two weeks later, I met with my coaches, sat down with everyone. I asked what they thought, if it was time to stop or not. We decided to move forward. The next day I was in the gym.”

”I think I still have much wood to burn, full capacity to go there and fight for the title again. I still have four fights left in the contract. I want to do at least three this year. I want to get to the third fighting for the title, be champion again. Then, in the future, I think about retiring or not.”

Aldo entered the UFC and was immediately crowned as champion of the 145-pound division after the UFC bought and absorbed the WEC back in 2010. Aldo had been featherweight champion in the WEC and managed to reign over the weight class for six years in total.

Aldo lost his belt following a 13-second knockout loss at the hands of rival Conor McGregor at UFC 194 but managed to recapture the interim featherweight title after defeating Frankie Edgar for a second time at UFC 200.

Aldo has gone winless since the Edgar rematch and has now lost three of his last four fights by some form of knockout.

Thankfully, Aldo found his motivation to fight again after meeting with his team and coaches and is now set to fight Jeremy “Lil Heathen” Stephens in his first non-title fight in years.

Aldo and Stephens will meet in the co-main event of UFC on FOX 30 on July 28 in Calgary.

Former long-time UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo is now nearly a month and a half removed from the first loss he has suffered in a decade.

Aldo surrendered his title at last month’s UFC 194 from Las Vegas, suffering a brutal 13 second knockout loss at the hands of reigning boss Conor McGregor.

In the aftermath of such a devastating and heart breaking loss, “Scarface” has made it clear that all he’s interest in is a rematch with McGregor or a fight for the title. The former champion has even insisted that he will wait until he is given one of those two.

With McGregor moving up to challenge for the lightweight strap against Rafael dos Anjos at March 5’s UFC 196, and Frankie Edgar likely being next in line at featherweight, Aldo could end up having a lot of time on his hands.

Not only that, but UFC President Dana White doesn’t seem too interested in granting those wishes towards Aldo, a man who hasn’t always seemed to get along with his employers

It’s been nearly a month and a half since former long-time UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo surrendered his title in brutal fashion at December 12’s UFC 194 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Aldo was knocked out cold in just 13 seconds by Irish super star and reigning 145 pound title holder the “Notorious” Conor McGregor.

In the aftermath of such a devastating injury, “Scarface” has remained relatively quiet, that is until now.

Aldo took to his official Instagram account today (January 27, 2016) to make it clear that he will only accept two fights moving a forward: a fight for the title, or a fight with McGregor regardless of the belt:

“Hi everyone, i was quiet for a while because i was waiting for my rematch based on how the fight Went down, in fact I was already training for it, but apparently I was wrong. So I wanted to make something clear to UFC: for everything I have done, everything I have accepted and mostly how the fight ended, I will not accept any other fight other than a title shot . My only exception would be fighting thenotorious , at any time, anywhere , and once that he is scary and knows that I’m gonna win …. Doesn’t have to be title fight against him. Keep my belt, but I wanna whoop ur ass anywhere.

@danawhite @lorenzofertitta @ufc keep ur word. I still believe in the company that I work for. #rematch”

Unfortunately for Aldo, this request likely will not come soon, as McGregor is slated to move up in weight, challenging lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos at March 5’s UFC 196 from Las Vegas.

The “Notorious” will hold his featherweight title no matter the outcome of his next fight, but Frankie Edgar is thought to be the next man in line at 145 pounds making Aldo the odd man out.

Should “Scarface” suck it up and take another fight in the meantime, or does he deserve a rematch?
