Reigning UFC featherweight champion the “Notorious” Conor McGregor made headlines today (April 19, 2016) when he released a tweet indicating that he would be retiring at just 27 years of age ahead of his scheduled rematch with Nate Diaz which was set for the main event of July 9’s blockbuster UFC 200 from Las Vegas.

After the MMA world blew up in a midst of chaos, UFC president Dana White appeared on Sports Center to clarify the news.

According to White, McGregor has been pulled from his main event spot at UFC 200 due to the fact that he refused to come to Las Vegas to participate in promotional activities for the card.

White confirmed that these promotional responsibilities are mandatory, leading the UFC with no other choice than to pull the Irishman from the card.

As far as retirement goes, the UFC president had no word on whether or not McGregor’s tweet was true.

The “Notorious” one has become one of the fastest stars in sport history over the last few years, but is coming off of a shocking loss to Diaz in a welterweight bout at March 6’s UFC 196.

Controversial submission artist Rousimar Palhares is currently banished from competing state side in mixed martial arts, coming after a period of momentum that saw ‘Toquinho’ at the peak of his career thus far. After being canned by the UFC for numerous occasions of not releasing submission holds in a timely manner, Palhares transferred quickly to the World Series of Fighting. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ace signed with Ray Sefo’s budding organization in March 2014 at WSOF 9, and won the welterweight title in his debut against Steve Carl.

He defended against fellow UFC castaway Jon Fitch at WSOF 16 with his trademark heel hook, but once again delved in to the deep hole he’d dug himself so many times in the past. This time it was Jake Shields who made some shocking accusations against Palhares, claiming the Brazilian had gouged his eyes throughout their WSOF 22 title bout, and that the fight ending submission was not released in good time. The Nevada State Athletic Commission agreed on both counts, and Palhares was stripped of the title and banned from fighting for two years.

Now relegated to submission tournaments such as Polaris 3, where he recently fought to a draw against Gary Tonon, it looks as though Palhares might have a hard time finding another fight, or at least that’s what we all thought. Newly formed Italian MMA promotion Venator recently announced the banned ‘Paul Harris’ would be facing Emil Meek on their May 21 card. WSOF officials vowed to put a halt to this, and the situation remains tentative at best.

Having grappled with Tonon in the United Kingdom this past weekend, Rousimar Palhares spoke with the Daily Mail in a rare interview, and made some very interesting statements. Check it out:

‘I know I have an image as a bad boy in the ring but that is not the person that I am underneath. If people got to really know me they would see what I am really like.

‘I have made some mistakes in the past and during fights but I am a good person. I am seen as bad but that is its during the fight. A fight is a fight and sometimes my mindset changes when I get in there.’

‘The arrival of my baby boy two months ago has given me a new perspective on life and on fighting. I will still win at all costs but now I am grounded,’ said Palhares.

‘I am not a monster but I know that many people think I fight like one. People ask me why I am like how I am in the ring but if everyone knew about my childhood then they would understand.’

‘The feeling I get when I go into the octagon is difficult to explain. I am filled with happiness and joy. It is what I do. Fighting is what I am good but I don’t want to particularly hurt the other fighter.’

‘I would consider returning to the UFC just to fight McGregor, ‘ he said….

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has arguably single handedly put Ireland back on the map regarding combat sports, and it seems as if he’s widely adored in his homeland.

Often times dubbed as the “Pride of Ireland”, the “Notorious” one is normally followed by tens of thousands of screaming Irish fans each and every time he fights.

The loud-mouthed knockout artist has rose to prominence with his brash trash talk, often receiving hate and criticism because of it. However, this criticism rarely comes from his own country – that is until recently.

JP O’Malley of the Irish Independent recently wrote an article trashing McGregor, accusing him of only being loyal to his money, as well as acting as a lackluster example to the Irish youth:

“But the world champion mixed-martial-arts fighter isn’t just a paid lackey for a dodgy sporting enterprise working out of the Nevada desert. McGregor also appears to be devoid of any kind of moral compass; a trait one usually expects from a successful global athlete of his stature. His one true loyalty is to money and material wealth.

Never one to shy away from cliches and bland stereotypes in public, McGregor has also labelled the Irish – to millions of viewers around the world – as a nation of people who “are lovers of combat”. It’s hard to figure out if McGregor has the even the most basic intellectual faculties required to think before he speaks, given just how outrageous some of his comments have been.

Perhaps what’s most worrying about McGregor’s recent accession to sporting global dominance, though, is the example it’s setting to impressionable youngsters across Ireland. Namely, the normalising of barbaric violence in our culture, especially around young, naive, and hugely impressionable children, who tend to emulate the behaviour of their elders.”

While some Irish natives have referred to McGregor as national hero and icon, it’s definitely interesting to look at the situation from the opposite side of the spectrum.

RDA: McGregor Will Be Scared Once I Hit Him

Brash and outspoken Irish UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has already begun his patented trash towards his next opponent, 155-pound title holder Rafael dos Anjos.

The two men will do battle in the main event of March 5’s UFC 197, as McGregor attempts to become the first fighter in UFC history to hold two belts simultaneously. The “Notorious” one came into the UFC as a two-weight world champion in Cage Warriors, but dos Anjos doesn’t appear to be impressed with McGregor’s “amateur” accomplishments:

“UFC lightweight division isn’t the belt he got in Ireland when he fought a guy with a record of 2-7,” Dos Anjos told MMAFighting.com. “It’s a different world. He fought guys that don’t even have Sherdog pages. He holds belts off his amateur show in Ireland. It’s a different story to hold two UFC belts.”

As far as the talking goes, the Brazilian champion feels as if once he hits McGregor, it’s a whole different story:

Lightweight division is a different story. We’ll see. Everybody talks. Anthony Pettis talked before the fight. Donald Cerrone talked before the fight. See what happened? I’ll let him talk and we’ll see what happens. I hope he’s training hard. I think he’s going to be scared once I hit him.”

The Irishman completed his triumphant rise to the pinnacle of the 145-pound division last month, shockingly knocking out former long-time boss Jose Aldo in a mere 13-seconds. Now hungry for more, McGregor has decided to play his card against the big boys, and dos Anjos admits that the “Notorious” one has nothing to lose.

Despite this, RDA doesn’t feel any pressure, as he’s just excited with the fight coming to fruition:

“He doesn’t have anything to lose,” said Dos Anjos. “He’s a smart guy. He knows that if he loses to [featherweight contenders] Jose Aldo or Frankie Edgar, he doesn’t have anything. But at lightweight, if he wins, he’s the man. If he loses, he still has his belt.

“I don’t feel any pressure. I have to take care of my family, my team and my legacy. It’s one more fight. There isn’t anything special in this fight. I’m just happy to put my hands on this guy and make him humble. I think the toughest part of this camp will be not putting my hands on him before the fight happens.”

The bout was confirmed earlier this week, and McGregor wasted no time spitting out a controversial comment, calling dos Anjos a traitor to his country, and dedicating the bout to Brazil. As far as the champion is concerned, the Irish star is simply crazy:

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Dos Anjos said of McGregor’s comments. “We have a lot of Brazilians in the United States. It doesn’t mean we’re traitors to our country. I’ve got kids and I had to move for different things like better wrestling training partners here. I think that was a frustrated way to try to win the Brazilian fans. This guy is out of his mind. He’s going to try to do his best to try to mess with my head. I don’t hate him, but the Brazilians do. Brazil is on my side.”

Who will take over the lightweight division come March?
