UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and lightweight king Eddie Alvarez are heading for a UFC 205 clash in November. In many ways this 155-pound championship clash will represent the new age of the UFC. Super fights are not unheard of in the UFC, but are extremely rare. In the UFC’s modern era there’s been only one; BJ Penn vs. Georges St-Pierre. Penn, the lightweight champ of the time, had already fought and lost against ‘GSP.’ The welterweight strap was on the line at UFC 94, and the Canadian champ defended it with a decision win.

There have been a few much-anticipated super fights booked over the years, but none have come to fruition. Jose Aldo was meant to fight Anthony Pettis while they were 145 and 155-pound champs respectively. That fight fell apart due to injury. The difference between these fights and the heavily reported McGregor vs. Alvarez clash is arguably the money aspect. You could argue that pay-per-view and crowd revenue has always been the motivation for any big fight, but never before has this factor been so apparent and flaunted.

Red Panty Night

The hilarious statement made by Conor McGregor about Rafael dos Anjos at the GO BIG presser is somewhat poignant now. Champions are starting to stray away from the rankings on a frequent basis-why? The cash involved in the big name fights. CM Punk’s UFC debut made the ex-WWE star $500K, while his opponent Mickey Gall made $30K. Those figures don’t even need expanding on, they simply support this argument further.

Tyron Woodley wants GSP, Dominick Cruz wants McGregor, and even Demetrious Johnson is talking about a superfight now. Where this whole saga could get extremely interesting is if McGregor defeats Alvarez. The question of the Irishman’s featherweight title remains unanswered. Although UFC president Dana White said ‘The Notorious’ would have to vacate to fight at UFC 205 at 155 pounds, nothing is certain until it’s done and dusted.

New York, New York

Another major part of the UFC coming in to their new era is the debut of the promotion in New York. For years the UFC battled narrow-minded and corrupt senators in the state, finally cutting the ribbon to the Big Apple earlier this year. It’s almost poetic that the first superfight in more than seven years would mark promotion’s first trip to NYC. What are the ramifications of a victory for McGregor though, or Alvarez for that matter?

It’s a win-win situation for the Irish star, perhaps even more so if he’s able to keep his featherweight title in the meantime. In terms of money it’ll be great for both men, but arguably ‘The Silent Assassin’ has a lot more on the line. Only the lightweight belt will be up for grabs, putting the ball firmly in Alvarez’s court.

Future

As the rankings slide further in to obscurity, the dollar sign reveals itself as king. Fuelling that green throne is Conor McGregor, who ushers in the new age of money fights. One huge and rather intriguing question-who takes over after ‘The Notorious’ is gone? Ronda Rousey is arguably up there in terms of PPV draws, but these kinds of stars are few and far between. Will the focus shift back from money and to rankings, or is this more than just a flavor of the month?

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and his interim counterpart Joe Aldo have a very colorful history. ‘The Notorious’ first mentioned Aldo’s name back in 2013 after destroying Marcus Brimage in his UFC debut. Th duo were eventually paired in a pivotal title bout at UFC 189 that would never transpire. Eventually McGregor fought Chad Mendes for the junior strap in the main event on July 11, 2015. The resulting second round TKO win for the Irishman set up a unification bout for the recovering Brazilian’s belt.

When McGregor and Aldo finally met i the octagon at UFC 194, they’d been embroiled in a year-long rivalry. The world tour for UFC 189 had seen countless confrontations and trash talking wars, and it all came to a head in 13 seconds. ‘Mystic Mac’ fulfilled his prophecy, laying Aldo down with a single well-timed left hand to the chin. As ‘Scarface’ came around from his flash slumber on the canvas, he awoke to a completely different world.

Rise and Fall

The fall of arguably the greatest 145-pound fighter of all-time was truly a historic moment. The time since has proved to be a wild ride, and has signalled the potential end of the rankings. ‘Money fights’ are he future, ushered in by that one-punch knockout that changed the way the cogs turned. While ‘The Notorious’ wondered up in weight to fight Nate Diaz twice, Aldo defeated Frankie Edgar at UFC 200 for the interim belt.

Continuing the trend of cash over rankings, the Irish superstar now has sights on the lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez. The fierce rivalry with ‘Scarface’ must go on if Mcgregor plans to fight at featherweight again, but that’s yet to be revealed. According to a report on Bloody Elbow, the beef is not as serious as you’d think.

Jose Aldo Conor McGregor

Friends?

“It’s a friendly relationship. I don’t have a problem with him trying to promote himself. If we take a look at it money-wise, it was pretty good. I think there should be more fighters like him at featherweight. I’m not his friend, though. He can go his way and I can go mine.”

“I’ve seen him staring at a wall, looking at nothing with everyone around him trying to taunt him and he would just stand there, gazing. He’s a regular, mellow guy, but if he sees a camera or some Irish people, he transforms in a such way that makes you say to yourself ‘son of a bitch’”.

Drinking with the enemy

“One day we were hanging out and he said he was going to get the coffee and I said I wanted mine with sugar and he said something like ‘nice’. Most of the times we met, there was always someone recording us, though, so he had to keep his persona up. With no cameras, he changes completely.”

Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor 2 is by no means a certainty, but one thing is–there’ll be no talk of friendship if/when they are booked to rematch.

Canelo Alvarez Calls Out Conor McGregor For Boxing Match

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has done a great job of putting his name in everyone’s mouths. First the Irish star became hot property in mixed martial arts. After a successful UFC debut in 2013, ‘The Notorious’ put the entire 145-pound division on blast. Calling out Jose Aldo from his very first fight, McGregor vowed to dethrone the long-reigning Brazilian, but few believed him at that stage. Following five more fights, McGregor stood opposite ‘Scarface’ at UFC 194.

As McGregor had predicted, Aldo fell from the first clean strike. The only ever UFC champion to that point had been demolished in 13 seconds. The next sequence of events would keep the Irishman away from the featherweight division and yet to defend the belt to this day. Originally meant to face Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196, McGregor instead fought Nate Diaz. The Stockton bad boy rocked the boat in a big way, defeating the UFC’s biggest star by submission.

McGregor would remain at welterweight for the immediate rematch with Diaz, but not before a drawn out period of drama. After neglecting to attend the UFC 200 press conference, the Irish striker was dropped from the main event and fell in to a feud against the promotion. This in turn led to a somewhat theatrical beef with boxing great Floyd Mayweather.

Since he became the flavour of the month in the boxing world, ‘The notorious’ got in to it with the stars of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). Once again proving his reach has no bounds, McGregor was making front page news with 10-word statements about pro wrestling. His saga in the boxing world is far from over though. After his UFC 202 victory over Diaz, former WBC middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez piped up.

Canelo-McGregor

McGregor vs. Canelo

McGregor had first mentioned Canelo when the Mexican boxer vacated the WBC title. Choosing to drop one pound to face Liam Smith instead of Gennady Golovkin, Canelo took some flack from McGregor for ‘cherry picking.’ The decision has indeed caused controversy among boxing fans, and after UFC 202 Alvarez blasted ‘The Notorious’ for having poor cardio.

Taking it one step further during a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, as quoted by MMAMania, Alvarez issued a straight challenge to McGregor:

“If he wants to try out boxing, then anytime he wants. If he wants to come over to this side of the world and try boxing, anytime he wants, to see that it’s not as easy as he thinks.”

Donald Cerrone Not Happy Conor McGregor Beat Nate Diaz

UFC lightweight/welterweight contender Donald Cerrone had a great night at UFC 202. UFC lightweight/welterweight contender Donald Cerrone had a great night at UFC 202. Taking to the octagon for the third time in the 170-pound division, ‘Cowboy’ faced hard-nosed wrestler Rick Story on the evening’s main card. Cerrone earned his third straight victory with a vintage second round TKO against ‘The Horror,’ eventually sealing the deal with a head kick and flurries of punches.

The win earned Cerrone his fifth performance of the night bonus under the UFC banner. It was a great way to start his future with the new owners of the promotion, and might well lead to a UFC 205 title shot against Eddie Alvarez. Although a lightweight title shot from a welterweight win is somewhat unorthodox, the main event at UFC 202 is proof that ‘money weight’ fights now rule the roost.

Thoughts on McGregor vs. Diaz

The UFC 202 main event featured two men that Cerrone is all too familiar with. Nate Diaz dominated ‘Cowboy’ back at UFC 141 and, although he’s never fought Conor McGregor, the two have shared a rivalry wince the infamous ‘GO BIG’ presser. As captured by our good friends at Submission Radio, Cerrone was disappointed that ‘The Notorious’ topped Diaz in Vegas:

“I feel like wrestling is really the gap in Nate (Diaz’s) game. If he had taken Conor (McGregor) down I feel like he could have secured victory in this fight. I don’t know what Nate was doing, when he goes out there and boxes he really dominates. I think the kicking took him off his game maybe, I don’t know.

“I was back there hooting and hollering for Nate man like ‘Come on man, f*cking get him. I was upset, I was really pulling for him. Now I got to listen to this f*cking dude talking all the f*cking time again. The king is back? F*ck it.”

What’s next for Cerrone?

As mentioned, and especially for a guy with so many fights and wins, anything is possible. If not a lightweight title fight, where and who should Donald Cerrone fight next?donald-cerrone-rick-story-ufc-202-1[1]

Amir Khan Begins Training For UFC Debut, Calls Out Conor McGregor

The worlds of boxing and mixed martial arts are never far apart. They seem to run parallel but also in quite different directions. If you ask UFC president Dana White, he’ll tell you boxing is dying, equally if Bob Arum’s recent comments are anything to go by, the UFC is ‘full of corruption and steroids.’ Yet still the two sports are eternally linked in one way or another, mostly in a competitive nature.

When boxers like James Toney make a move in to MMA, we tend to take it with a pound of salt, but when you hear about guys like Amir Khan, it’s no longer a freak show attraction. The former world welterweight champion from Bolton, England has teased joining the UFC in the past, but in recent days has really began substantiating these reports. Either that, or he’s playing the ‘Mayweather game.’

LIDO_Khan_1024_261725k[1]

Via BBC.co.uk, Amir Khan says he’s ready for a big fight with UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor:

“McGregor is a massive name in MMA and I’m a big name in boxing, so, globally, I think it would be a massive fight,”

“I don’t think Mayweather would want to fight under MMA rules, I’ve been fighting all my life, so, for me, I don’t think it’d be a problem for me to learn and switch over to the sport,”

Unlike Mayweather’s rumoured fight with McGregor, Khan has some legitimate involvement with the sport of MMA. He’s co-owner of the Indian MMA promotion ‘Super Fight League,’ and is now massively teasing his switch to mixed martial arts competition. Although he lost in his most recent boxing bout with Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, it’s well-known that the jump to face the much bigger middleweight for the title was extremely risky.

Conor McGregor rode in to the UFC 196 main event fight with Nate Diaz on the back of a whole lot of hype and expectations. Unfortunately for McGregor and his infamous hordes of loyal fans, it was Nate Diaz on just 11 days notice who would claim the spoils of victory. In one of the wildest moments of 2016 so far, Diaz rocked ‘The Notorious’ and finished him with a second round submission.

The Stockton star was propelled in to the limelight after so many years of toiling in the non-needle mover category, and the featherweight champion was left with some serious reflection of both his performance and grappling skills. In his post fight interview with Joe Rogan, McGregor claimed he was not efficient with his energy, pretty much meaning he emptied the tank in round one looking for that big knockout finish.

All the talk of eating steaks instead of salads before his UFC 196 welterweight clash with Diaz would now come back to haunt McGregor. Had he really thought that when Diaz replaced Rafael dos Anjos he’d have a walk in the park? According to his coach John Kavanagh, as per his new book ‘win or learn’ (transcribed by The 42), McGregor’s loss was a lesson in many ways.

What people seem to forget about this whole thing is that Conor just loves to fight. Everything else — money, belts or fame — is just a bonus. It’s important that people understand that. He puts himself in dangerous, risky situations by accepting late changes of opponent and exploring different weight classes. Who else would do that in the same way he does? He keeps doing it because it’s all just so much fun to him. He takes those chances because he knows he’ll end up regretting it if he doesn’t, irrespective of the consequences. A strategy error in round two was the difference between victory and defeat on this occasion. Nevertheless, the sun still rose the following morning, just as it would have done if he had won.

McGregor’s long time coach reveals what changes they plan on making for the rematch with Diaz at UFC 202 in August. It includes a drastic change in the featherweight champ’s diet…
