UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor returns to face Nate Diaz for the second time at UFC 202. The two have a storied rivalry that dates back to Diaz calling out McGregor following his dominant win over Michael Johnson. At that time ‘The Notorious’ was heavily rumoured to be moving up to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title, and the Stockton bad boy Diaz was not amused.

Eventually McGregor would be booked in to face dos Anjos, who at the time was on a killer streak, but the fight would never take place. Instead, in a strange twist of fate, Diaz would replace the injured Brazilian and March 5 was fast approaching by this point. Diaz had just 11 days notice to prepare for the biggest fight of his life; a fight to prove his worth, to reap the seeds he’d sewn for 10 years in the UFC, and to face the man he’d accused of ‘taking everything I worked for motherf*cker!’

Conor vs. Diaz

Their rivalry was so fierce in that small window of opportunity before the fight, and the bout itself was so entertaining that an immediate rematch was granted. Although McGregor had tapped out in a somewhat unquestionable loss, his sway with the promotion and the simple marketability of their beef made the booking a no-brainer. The time since has been filled with many questions regarding ‘The Notorious” ability to close the huge gap in grappling skill, and also to face the man with a much larger frame and reach.

This latest video from ‘The Mac Life’ shows the featherweight boss taking on a taller foe in sparring.

We also know that McGregor has been training with elite black belt BJJ star Dillon Danis recently. As far as Diaz is concerned, he tends to keep his training and sparring pretty much on the down low.

A lot of questions surround Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor’s UFC 202 rematch. Their first fight at UFC 196 ended when Diaz locked in a rear naked choke in the second round, forcing the tap from the Irishman who looked lost on the ground. It was certainly a thrilling affair and, although Nate Diaz proclaimed he was ‘not surprised’ by the win, the fact he took the bout on just 11 days and won so convincingly was a shock to many.

Obviously the Stockton bad boy was a little softer around the midriff than we saw in his decision win over Michael Johnson, but he has since admitted he was ‘drinking tequila and eating tacos’ when he got the call to fight on March 5.

One massive lesson we learned from Diaz’s impressive win over Johnson is that when he’s both in shape and motivated, there are very few men who can touch him. So the question of how much effort Diaz puts in to his UFC 202 camp and the subsequent shape he’s in proves quite an intriguing debate. Once again fighting at welterweight, neither man has to worry about massively draining weight cuts, although McGregor’s cardio issues in the first fight certainly need addressing.

Taking a look through social media today shed light on the topic of both men’s training camp, and both Diaz brothers are in noticeably fantastic shape. Although physique isn’t everything, it’s plain to see that both Nick and Nate have really been putting in the rounds with Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez.

Here’s the latest updates from Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor’s training preparations for UFC 202. The event goes down on August 20, 2016, with Diaz vs. McGregor 2 serving as the man event of the pay-per-view MMA event.

Of all the crazy trash talk and insane confrontations before UFC 196, Nate Diaz’s comments about Conor McGregor’s ‘unique’ training methods possibly stood out more than anything else. After ‘The Notorious’ had blasted the Stockton’s bad boy’s team mates as ‘cheaters’ following failed drug tests, also claiming he had weak sparring partners, Diaz responded with an all-time classic line that exploded across the web the moment the well timed set of vibrations crossed his gums.

“Who do you train with? You’ve got that little goofy motherfucker with you. I have real training partners,”

“Top 10 fighters, Top 10 boxers, Top 10 jiu-jitsu guys, Top 10 kickboxers. You’re playing touch-butt with that dork in the park with the pony tail. And I’m the one who don’t got no training partners? I don’t think so.”

Diaz was referring to Ido Portal with that hilarious retort, McGregor’s movement coach. Portal’s influence had seen the Irishman adopt a very flow-based reactionary style of footwork, something many believed helped him score the crushing first round knockout of Jose Aldo during his championship winning moment at UFC 194. Everyone was suddenly obsessed with movement coaches, and the work with Portal became a big point of focus in the media.

As Diaz would put it, that ‘touch-butt’ did not help McGregor when they met in the octagon at UFC 196. Fighting at 170 pounds for the first time, ‘The Notorious’ would empty the tank in round one before getting slapped and tapped in the second.

After criticism of his grappling skills at UFC 196, Conor McGregor has drafted in Jiu Jitsu ace Dillon Danis to SBG (Straight Blast Gym) Dublin…

Once they were booked in to rematch at UFC 202 on August 20, McGregor clearly began taking Diaz far more seriously. He’d brought in Dillon Danis to help with his BJJ and the Olympic boxing team of Ireland to work on is striking. But as you’ll see in these latest training videos, the featherweight champion has been reunited with his old friend Ido Portal for this fight camp.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has a tall task ahead of him at UFC 202, in every respect of the word. Facing the much larger Nate Diaz in a rematch of their UFC 196 thriller, the Irishman will have to overcome not only a height and reach disadvantage, but also a pretty large gap in terms of grappling skills that proved to be the fight ending factor on March 5. After a crazy first round, Diaz wobbled McGregor on the feet, forcing the predominant striker to go for an ill fated takedown.

From there the fight was as good as over, the black belt under Cesar Gracie wrapped up his man after landing some mounted ground and pound, locking in a rear naked choke that forced the tap in mere seconds. So began the well deserved and full blown media arrival of Nate Diaz. Their colorful rivalry was far from over though.

Just weeks after their first fight, Diaz and ‘The Notorious’ were paired for another showdown at UFC 200. The fight would later fall apart as McGregor would dodge the first press conference for the event, but soon after the two were scheduled for UFC 202 in Las Vegas on August 20. The obvious questions surrounding the chances of McGregor facing Diaz at welterweight once again were addressed quite well by UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently:

The time for a rematch is now, when I say exposed I don’t mean he’s not talented, but he’s human and he can be beaten. But then he goes on Twitter saying stuff like ‘the first eight minutes were easy,’ hmmm. That doesn’t matter, the last three were a lot worse, you got f*cked up man, you gotta accept that.”

“I think stylistically it’s a troublesome fight for (McGregor). Nate’s grappling is a world away from Conor right now, his cardio is insane and he is so tough, so where is Conor shining?”

So how does Conor McGregor address this rather apparent set of holes in his game? Well it looks like the Irish star is well aware of his need to up his game for the rematch, and has brought in some high level training partners for the second instalment with Diaz.
