It’s been a long road since UFC 196 for Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz. The Irishman has gone back to camp with changes in mind, but for Diaz the pressures have been media related. Since defeating the heavy favourite McGregor in March, the Stockton bad boy has experienced a surge in popularity. With his new-found super stardom comes more responsibilities.

Is this what Diaz was hoping for? It’s part of being a big money draw, which he most certainly is now. After 10 years and 25 fights for the UFC, the cult heroes Nick and Nate have only just started receiving their dues. Ahead of UFC 202, the talk has centred around revenge for ‘The Notorious’ or a repeat for Diaz.

Life After UFC 196

During a sit down interview with BT Sports this week, Nate Diaz discussed life after UFC 196 and the rematch at UFC 202. Here are the best bits:

“There’s been a lot of press, it’s been good to get out there and do this stuff. The fight never ended though. They called me three days after the first fight and it was straight back in to training. With all the press and stuff, it feels like the fight hasn’t ended yet. It’s good to let people see what I’m really like, because before people would look at me like I was a maniac.”

“At this stage in my career I don’t have to fight. I just want to do the real big fights, so I can pay bills and take care of stuff outside of fighting. Am I supposed to fight for fun, because I like to hurt people? I don’t think so, I don’t like to hurt people or ruin people’s days. This fight shit is a rough life. I just want to live my life. I’ve been doing it for 25 fights now. I just want to fight for big deals, big paydays.”

Training For The Rematch

“I just do what I do. I got a lot of pro sparring partners from boxing and kickboxing. I got the best Jiu Jitsu guys in the world, I just try to be ready for everything. Ready for good positions, bad positions, I just want to be ready for war. Ready for anything that’s gonna happen, win or lose, kill or be killed. I’m just trying to keep my head on my shoulders.”

“I don’t expect to get knocked out by anybody, but I accept the fact. There’s two options in a fight–you win or you lose. You better think of every way you can win, but more importantly you should think of every way you can lose. You should be prepared so when it does happen you won’t be heart-broken.”

Next Fights

“I’m gonna fight this fight, then whoever wants it, they better be a big fight. People are saying all this shit like ‘oh you lost this fight,’ it’s like fuck that. You fight 25 times in the UFC and then talk. People get to fight me, they get to fight my brother Nick, we’re the big names. If you want to fight me, I don’t want to hear no Twitter call out. You better say my name loud.”

Will Nate Diaz defeat Conor McGregor again? With just a few days left before UFC 202, it’s won’t be long until we find out. How insane would it be if the Irishman returned to featherweight on the back of two losses?

The flavor of the month is once again a huge fight between UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor and his new-found rival Nate Diaz. The unlikely pairing was born from Rafael dos Anjos’ injury before UFC 196, and Diaz made sure he played the spoiler role on March 5. With the promotion rubbing their hands over potential fights with Georges St-Pierre and Robbie Lawler, the Stockton bad boy handed McGregor his first loss in the UFC.

After 10 years of fighting in the UFC, Diaz was finally getting paid. He’d dominated Michael Johnson in December of 2015, using that moment to blast ‘The Notorious’ during an explicit post-fight interview. These comments would eventually lead to the UFC 196 pairing that catapulted the popular brawler in to the mainstream.

The Exchange

“I didn’t want to go on (The Ultimate Fighter). They wanted nick to go on TUF 4, it was the comeback season with Chris Lytle and Matt Serra, and he was like ‘I’m not going on that show.’ We’d already made fun of Diego Sanchez and Josh Koscheck, like ‘Why would you go on that show?’”

“Then (the UFC) called saying they wanted me on season 5. Then Nick and Cesar (Gracie) said I should go on that show. I was like ‘What? We were just making fun of this show.’ I didn’t want to go on the camera, I was anti-social, I was 20-years old at that time. I really just did it because they pay for your medical.”

Living as a fighter

“People were looking at us, the neighbourhood we came from, and we weren’t meant to make it. As a 22, 23-year old making some money it was like ‘I got a career now.’ I was able t make some money, looking at it , this whole thing is fucking crazy.”

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor doesn’t waste much time making friends with his attention from the media. Undoubtedly the biggest attraction in MMA, arguably combat sports today, McGregor spends a fair amount of time filling the headline spots on major news outlets. He’s one of a select few UFC stars to bridge the gap between the still somewhat growing sport of mixed martial arts and the mainstream media.

With this extra time in the limelight McGregor has made some rather outlandish statements lately. One such quote by ‘The Notorious’ included a verbal attack on the world of pro wrestling. The Irishman blasted the stars of the WWE as ‘pussies’ during a recent rant, and it’s sparked outrage among fans of World Wrestling Entertainment, of which there are many.

“Apology”

Ahead of his UFC 202 rematch with Nate Diaz, Conor McGregor has once again been on full speed ahead. Taking to Twitter in the early hours of this morning, ‘The Notorious’ attempted to take back some of his scathing comments. Well, at least in the first sentence.

It wouldn’t be sincere of McGregor to mince his words, it’s just not how he does these things. That said, how far is the boundary, if there even is one at all? ‘The Notorious’ is widely credited as bringing the UFC and the sport of MMA to never before seen levels of popularity. He’s flirted with the boxing world with the wild rumours involving Floyd Mayweather, but his attacks on the WWE seem a little less motivated by money.

UFC 202

Diaz vs. McGregor 2 goes down on August 20 at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pay-per-view card s highly anticipated and forecast by many to sell at a much higher rate than UFC 200. The biggest name in the sport, Conor McGregor is heading in to the most important fight of his life, but Diaz holds all the chips after submitting him on March 5.

The hype is steadily beginning to build for Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor 2. After a brief but massively entertaining rivalry before UFC 196, McGregor and Diaz were swiftly scheduled for a rematch at UFC 200 UFC 202. On just 11 days notice, replacing lightweight champ at the time, Rafael dos Anjos, Diaz was able to end McGregor’s impressive six-year streak with conviction. Wobbled and lot on the mat, ‘The Notorious’ tapped to a tight rear naked choke to conceive his first loss under the UFC banner.

With the 145-pound title now at the interim stage with Jose Aldo defeating Frankie Edgar at UFC 200, there have been a lot of questions about McGregor’s will to cut back down. He fought on March 5 as a welterweight and will do so again on August 20, but take weight out of the equation for a second. If the Irish striker can defeat his Stockton rival at UFC 202, what’s to stop a trilogy fight being booked just as quickly as the rematch?

Nate Diaz made good on his word against Conor McGregor at UFC 196…

With such a colourful rivalry, Diaz and McGregor make for great viewing. Take yesterday (July 26, 2016) with Nate Diaz appearing on the Conan O’Brien show. A recorded message by ‘The Notorious’ was played for Diaz during the now ultra-popular Diaz’s segment. The resulting troll reminded us of just how fun their rivalry can be, also leading to musings about a rubber match if the Irishman can get the win back:
We’ll have to wait another tree weeks before we see exactly how the rematch plays out, but you can bet your bottom dollar the rivalry will get far more fierce as we approach August 20. Will the featherweight champion score welterweight revenge, or will it be the Stockton bad boy who remains ‘not surprised?’

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor returns to face Nate Diaz for the second time at UFC 202. The two have a storied rivalry that dates back to Diaz calling out McGregor following his dominant win over Michael Johnson. At that time ‘The Notorious’ was heavily rumoured to be moving up to face Rafael dos Anjos for the lightweight title, and the Stockton bad boy Diaz was not amused.

Eventually McGregor would be booked in to face dos Anjos, who at the time was on a killer streak, but the fight would never take place. Instead, in a strange twist of fate, Diaz would replace the injured Brazilian and March 5 was fast approaching by this point. Diaz had just 11 days notice to prepare for the biggest fight of his life; a fight to prove his worth, to reap the seeds he’d sewn for 10 years in the UFC, and to face the man he’d accused of ‘taking everything I worked for motherf*cker!’

Conor vs. Diaz

Their rivalry was so fierce in that small window of opportunity before the fight, and the bout itself was so entertaining that an immediate rematch was granted. Although McGregor had tapped out in a somewhat unquestionable loss, his sway with the promotion and the simple marketability of their beef made the booking a no-brainer. The time since has been filled with many questions regarding ‘The Notorious” ability to close the huge gap in grappling skill, and also to face the man with a much larger frame and reach.

This latest video from ‘The Mac Life’ shows the featherweight boss taking on a taller foe in sparring.

We also know that McGregor has been training with elite black belt BJJ star Dillon Danis recently. As far as Diaz is concerned, he tends to keep his training and sparring pretty much on the down low.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has a tall task ahead of him at UFC 202, in every respect of the word. Facing the much larger Nate Diaz in a rematch of their UFC 196 thriller, the Irishman will have to overcome not only a height and reach disadvantage, but also a pretty large gap in terms of grappling skills that proved to be the fight ending factor on March 5. After a crazy first round, Diaz wobbled McGregor on the feet, forcing the predominant striker to go for an ill fated takedown.

From there the fight was as good as over, the black belt under Cesar Gracie wrapped up his man after landing some mounted ground and pound, locking in a rear naked choke that forced the tap in mere seconds. So began the well deserved and full blown media arrival of Nate Diaz. Their colorful rivalry was far from over though.

Just weeks after their first fight, Diaz and ‘The Notorious’ were paired for another showdown at UFC 200. The fight would later fall apart as McGregor would dodge the first press conference for the event, but soon after the two were scheduled for UFC 202 in Las Vegas on August 20. The obvious questions surrounding the chances of McGregor facing Diaz at welterweight once again were addressed quite well by UFC commentator Joe Rogan recently:

The time for a rematch is now, when I say exposed I don’t mean he’s not talented, but he’s human and he can be beaten. But then he goes on Twitter saying stuff like ‘the first eight minutes were easy,’ hmmm. That doesn’t matter, the last three were a lot worse, you got f*cked up man, you gotta accept that.”

nate-diaz-conor-mcgregor-mma-ufc-196-mcgregor-vs-diaz-4[1]

“I think stylistically it’s a troublesome fight for (McGregor). Nate’s grappling is a world away from Conor right now, his cardio is insane and he is so tough, so where is Conor shining?”

So how does Conor McGregor address this rather apparent set of holes in his game? Well it looks like the Irish star is well aware of his need to up his game for the rematch, and has brought in some high level training partners for the second instalment with Diaz.
