UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is in unfamiliar territory in terms of weight at UFC 196, but he has his eyes on Robbie Lawler’s prize….

From salads to steaks has been the story of Conor McGregor’s trip to 170 pounds, where he finds himself facing a new opponent in the form of Nate Diaz at UFC 196. The original headline bout was set between ‘The Notorious’ and Rafael dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s lightweight championship, but the fight got scrapped when RDA suffered a broken foot in training. Diaz was sewn in to the card on 12 days notice, in a situation that echoes the run up to UFC 189 featuring Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

So the pairing of the Stockton bad boy and the Irish fan favorite seems to be a match made in heaven, but the fight carries some serious risks for both men. For starters, Diaz being in on short notice had raised questions about his fitness, but the recent images of the younger Diaz bro training for a marathon brought back the legitimacy of this fight to an agreeable level.

Obviously it will take a lot more than being in shape for a fight against ‘The Notorious’ to be a successful one, but a performance like Diaz pulled off against top contender Michael Johnson would be a good starting point. We know the gameplan in the striking with Diaz, it’s stay on the outside but not give enough opportunity for McGregor to get a rhythm. Whether Diaz is able to implement that is another story. As far as the ground game goes, getting this one to the mat ASAP might be a better road to victory for Nate.

We’ve talked a lot about what’s next for McGregor after this fight, and he was asked that very question after his UFC 196 open workout last night (Wednesday March 2, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

See how many UFC fighters have offered to fight Conor McGregor after Rafael dos Anjos has wthdraw from UFC 196…

With the terrible news that Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot and has withdrawn from UFC 196, a whole new set of questions now surround the March 5 pay-per-view event. Will anyone take a fight against Conor McGregor on two weeks notice, and if so, who? Well it seems there’s no shortage of potentially available contenders to step in in RDA’s place, but who will want to tread the ground Chad Mendes fell on at UFC 189?

Then there’s the question of weight, whether there will be a title on the line, and so many other factors to consider, perhaps most pertinent for the UFC is how they’ll be able to salvage the fight’s PPV value. McGregor challenging for the lightweight title was huge, but still, it’s bound to be a ‘Notorious’ lottery for whoever the UFC gives the go ahead for UFC 196.
