Kevin Lee offers his theory as to why the UFC could book a rematch between former champion Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. The rumor about this potential fight all started earlier this month by UFC President Dana White.

This is where he stated that he thinks Poirier would be a logical next opponent for McGregor. By doing this fight, the winner would then fight the winner of a lightweight title bout between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

Lee stated in a recent interview with MMAJunkie.com that he doesn’t have a problem with the fight booking. He does have a theory as to why it’s being booked which is to rebuild the former UFC champion after his recent loss. The title contender also has high praise for Poirier as he sees him as a serious competitor and not just a brawler.

“Dustin, to me, is not a serious competitor in this division. If Conor’s going to take a step backward. Fight a man he already knocked out in the first round at 145 (pounds). If he needs that steps backward to get himself feeling good again so that they can try and make some more money off him. Then that’s on him,” Lee said.

“But I put Poirier in another category. He’s in the more ‘fun fight’ category with Nate Diaz. Some of these older guys that are just out there to have fun. I’m out here chasing titles.”

McGregor and Poirier have fought before inside of the Octagon at UFC 178 in 2014. This fight saw McGregor finish Poirier by first-round TKO in a featherweight bout.

Dana White Thinks Conor McGregor vs Dustin Poirier 2 Makes Sense

Dana White thinks the logical fight to make involving Conor McGregor would be to have him fight Dustin Poirier for a second time.

Dana White thinks the next fight that would feature former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor would be a rematch against Dustin Poirier. The UFC President spoke with media following the TUF 28 Finale event where he gave his take on what should be next for McGregor.

Just a few weeks ago, there was speculation that Donald Cerrone could fight McGregor next. Obviously, the former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion is the biggest name in the sport of MMA right now. On the flip side, Cerrone is still a popular fighter in the UFC who should get a marquee name to face next. However, that appears to not be the case.

The UFC President stated during the post-fight show on FS1 that Poirier would make a logical next opponent for McGregor. By doing this fight, the winner would then fight the winner of a lightweight title bout between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. This is also where White downplayed the rumors involving Cerrone and McGregor.

“The ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone fight has never, ever been discussed,” White said (H/T to MMAFighting). “That’s completely not true. I said the fight that makes sense right now is probably Poirier. And then Tony gets a shot at the title and the two winners fight each other. But I’m not sure exactly on a date when Conor is gonna fight yet. We have to get through this Nevada State Athletic Commission stuff first.”

McGregor and Poirier have fought before inside of the Octagon at UFC 178 in 2014. This fight saw McGregor finish Poirier by first-round TKO in a featherweight bout. Time will tell whether or not this fight gets booked.

Dustin Poirier Wants Conor McGregor Next, Willing To Fight Two Top Stars

Dustin Poirier has a lot of options now.

The post Dustin Poirier Wants Conor McGregor Next, Willing To Fight Two Top Stars appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Dustin Poirier is coming off the biggest win thus far in his pro-MMA career and as a result, has a lot of options in front of him.

As seen in the main event of Saturday’s (Saturday, July 28, 2018) UFC on FOX 30 event at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada that aired on big FOX, Poirier was able to score a second round stoppage victory over former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.

With this win, one would think that he just got a bit closer to a lightweight title shot despite the division being backlogged at the moment with the expectation that the promotion will announce a blockbuster title fight between Conor McGregor and champion Khabib Nurmagomedov for a fight that is likely to go down as soon as October at UFC 229 and as late as December at UFC 232.

These are two completely different fights for Poirier as he will likely fight the winner of this mega fight between these two stars and that makes Poirier excited as if he fights McGregor next then not only will he get one heck of a payday but also the chance to get some revenge on McGregor.

“They’re both tough fights,” Poirier said on FS1’s post-fight show to MMA Junkie. “Very different fights. If I get a cut of pay-per-view, I want to fight Conor. Every loss hurts, and I’m sure it feels great to get them back,” Poirier said. “But like I said before, I’m not chasing grudge matches. I’m chasing gold.”

“I don’t want to wait a year, but if it makes sense for me to wait four, six months, we’ll see,” he said. “I’ve been fighting a while. This is my 39th fight, man. I feel like I’ve earned a position to contest for a world title.”

“If (UFC President) Dana (White) calls me, and we make a deal for the fight, maybe,” Poirier said during the post-fight press conference. “I don’t know. I’m the best in the world, man. I could beat all these guys.”

“I don’t plan on getting crazy out of shape or anything like that,” Poirier said. “I’m going to get back in the gym, work on some stuff. I have a bunch of buddies fighting in a couple months back in Louisiana, so I want to help them get ready. I’ll be around, but in a perfect world, which this is not, I would have a full camp and get a fair shake at a title shot.”

If you recall, McGregor and Poirier faced off as featherweights four years ago with the ending seeing McGregor get his hand raised after scoring a first round stoppage to climb the ranks, which on the flip side, was a turning point for the rising contender as he decided to move up to lightweight shortly after and has been on a tear since then.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is in unfamiliar territory in terms of weight at UFC 196, but he has his eyes on Robbie Lawler’s prize….

From salads to steaks has been the story of Conor McGregor’s trip to 170 pounds, where he finds himself facing a new opponent in the form of Nate Diaz at UFC 196. The original headline bout was set between ‘The Notorious’ and Rafael dos Anjos for the Brazilian’s lightweight championship, but the fight got scrapped when RDA suffered a broken foot in training. Diaz was sewn in to the card on 12 days notice, in a situation that echoes the run up to UFC 189 featuring Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.

So the pairing of the Stockton bad boy and the Irish fan favorite seems to be a match made in heaven, but the fight carries some serious risks for both men. For starters, Diaz being in on short notice had raised questions about his fitness, but the recent images of the younger Diaz bro training for a marathon brought back the legitimacy of this fight to an agreeable level.

Obviously it will take a lot more than being in shape for a fight against ‘The Notorious’ to be a successful one, but a performance like Diaz pulled off against top contender Michael Johnson would be a good starting point. We know the gameplan in the striking with Diaz, it’s stay on the outside but not give enough opportunity for McGregor to get a rhythm. Whether Diaz is able to implement that is another story. As far as the ground game goes, getting this one to the mat ASAP might be a better road to victory for Nate.

We’ve talked a lot about what’s next for McGregor after this fight, and he was asked that very question after his UFC 196 open workout last night (Wednesday March 2, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Former top five ranked featherweight Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier has looked renewed and rejuvenated since moving back up to 155-pounds after dropping a TKO loss to newly crowned champion Conor McGregor in September 2014.

Now ranked at No. 11 in the lightweight division, Poirier has picked up three consecutive victories including back to back finishes over the likes of Carlos Diego Ferreira at UFC Fight Night 63 and Yancy Medeiros at UFC Fight Night 68.

Most recently, “The Diamond” squared off with rising prospect “Irish” Joe Duffy, widely known as the last man to beat McGregor. The two faced off at last month’s UFC 195 from Las Vegas with Poirier scoring a clear cut decision victory in an exciting affair.

“The Diamond” suffered an injury in his last bout, but should be looking to get back inside of the Octagon sometime soon, likely against a big name.

In fact, his next fight was scheduled to be the last on his contract, but it now appears as if he’ll be sticking around for the foreseeable future.

FOX Sports has confirmed that “The Diamond” has signed a new multi-fight contract with the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion.

Despite being a UFC veteran of 14 fights, Poirier remains at only 27 years of age. His youth along with his athleticism and well-rounded skill set should aid him in making a serious push in the crowded lightweight class.

Who should “The Diamond” square off with next?
