Conor McGregor Mauls Dennis Siver, Jumps Cage to Confront Jose Aldo [VIDEOS]

Last night’s UFC Fight Night 59 bout between Irish featherweight star Conor McGregor and German role-player Dennis Siver was every bit the lopsided showcase we expected it to be. McGregor thoroughly outclassed Siver in the standup exchanges, using his speed, accuracy, and unpredictable variety of strikes to befuddle his opponent. After two minutes in the second round, Siver found himself mounted on the mat, eating shots until Herb Dean called it a day. Highlights from McGregor’s TKO of Siver are above, via UFC on FOX.

The win clinched McGregor a title shot against current featherweight champion Jose Aldo, who was watching last night’s bout cageside. The fight is likely to headline UFC 187 (May 23rd, Las Vegas), and McGregor got the promotion off to an early start, leaping the cage after his smash-up of Siver and storming his way over to Aldo and his family.

Conor McGregor’s Financial Advice: Blow All Your Money, Stay Hungry [VIDEO]

Leading up to UFC Fight Night 59: McGregor vs. Whoever, the UFC is going full speed ahead on the Conor McGregor hype-train. (Count the number of times that Dennis Siver appears in this “McGregor Era” promo. Zero. The answer is zero.) And in all of their promotion, McGregor is made out to be a phenom, an uncrowned king, one of the biggest stars in the world — potentially, at least.

But this UFC Ultimate Insider segment on McGregor uses a different tactic: Presenting McGregor as a real human being. He has a sister who he used to scrap with as a child, and parents who were worried about their son giving up a stable life as a plumber to pursue cage-fighting. His mom maybe still doesn’t know what MMA is. (“Da boxin’ kind of gave him a complete different outlook,” she says.) At the 1:54 mark, Conor’s father Tony describes one of his son’s early fights against “an Eastern European guy…ex-Special Forces from Russia.” Tony can barely get through the story before he gets choked up. “That was a defining moment for me,” Tony says. “Boy become man.”

It’s a powerful moment, and it makes McGregor so much more relatable than all of his usual bluster. I also enjoyed this charming — and so utterly Irish — monologue that McGregor makes on the topic of money:

Since UFC featherweight Conor McGregor is in Rio this weekend to mean mug at Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes at UFC 179, the promotion decided to book him for a fan Q&A at the Maracanazinho Gymnasium. Yes, the UFC had an Irish superheel do a live show in front of a bunch of Brazilians who hate him, and yes, it was kind of a fiasco.

As Helwani summed it up: “This is like Andy Kaufman in Memphis. They hate him and he’s eating it up…Never experienced something like this. Basically every fan is coming to the mic to tell Conor how much they hate him.” Here are some highlights…

0:44: McGregor tells the crowd that the “Brazilian mamacitas” like his hair.

3:45: “It was your MOTHER.”

4:28: “The next time Jose steps into the Octagon after Saturday night, it will be to face me.” The crowd cheers, then starts chanting something that is either “Aldo” or a death threat.

6:49-7:13: One of the attendees goes on a rant that the translator doesn’t even try to pass along to McGregor, perhaps out of fear. Eventually, he huddles up with McGregor to give him the basic gist of what was said.

8:15: The guy is still talking. Paula Sack attempts to restore order. McGregor never responds to what was said and the next fan steps up to the mic.
