Conor McGregor Avoids Gun Charges In Ireland

UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor was under investigation by authorities in Ireland after posting a photo on Instagram of him holding an automatic rife. McGregor, who was wearing a ski mask in the photo, later apologized and claimed he was using an Airsoft gun to rehearse for a movie role. Carrying an Airsoft gun in public could still be a violation, and on January 7th Irish authorities stated: “We are investigating the circumstances under which the photo was taken.”

According to TMZ Sports, Irish police have concluded their investigation, which began earlier this month. A spokesperson told TMZ on Tuesday that the police had determined “no offense was committed” in relation to McGregor’s photo.

Matt Brown didn’t agree with the decision between TJ Dillashaw and Dominick Cruz, and he just got in to some beef over it. You gotta see this…

Dominick Cruz and TJ Dillashaw fought five rounds at UFC Boston this past weekend, and the result was a close split decision that has the MMA community divided. As has become quite the trend in the past year, Cruz snatched the title from Dillashaw on the judge’s scorecards, scores that have become a hot topic in the two days since. After Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit had a similar outcome, except ‘Ruthless’ kept the belt, some fans are beginning to lose patience with the current scoring system.

Of course many will argue that Cruz vs. Dillashaw wasn’t as close as the previously mentioned UFC 195 main event, here are the scorecards for your viewing pleasure:

You could argue that the fact the scoring is so contrasting between judge 2 and 3 is quite concerning, and this type of split often causes big controversy. Obviously the scorecards tell very little of the action that took place punch by punch, so what do the Fight Metric tallies look like? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered on that front too.

score

So the arguments will continue rampantly regardless of the fight stats and judge’s scorecards. One well known fighter that’s up in arms about the UFC Boston scoring is welterweight slugger Matt Brown. ‘The Immortal’ actually got in to it with a fellow fighter on Twitter last night, providing one of the most hilarious comebacks in MMA quarrel history. Brown has most certainly won the internet today!

Leading up to his highly anticipated title fight with bantamweight king TJ Dillashaw at tonight’s (January 17, 2016) UFC Fight Night 81, it seems as if returning former champion Dominick Cruz has ramped up his trash talk quite a bit.

The two men came face to face on a recent edition of Counterpunch alongside UFC commentator Jon Anik, with Cruz using his intellectual and analytical mind to get the better of Dillashaw in terms of verbal warfare.

Anik spoke up to MMA Junkie Radio on the exchange, noting that while there’s a genuine dislike between the two, it seemed as if “Killashaw” was simply annoyed more than anything else:

“They were jabbing at each other up until T.J and his wife walked out of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ gym,” Anik said. “It didn’t stop when the camera stopped.

“I feel like Dillashaw was more annoyed than anything else. I don’t know that he’s going to be phased in a negative way by any emotions. I think there’s a legitimate dislike there, but at least in terms of what Dominick was doing that day, I just felt like T.J. was annoyed. I guess my biggest takeaway was the size discrepancy.”

Despite having suffered three torn ACLs and an injured groin, and having competed only once over the last four years, Cruz, a man many consider to be the best 135-pounder of all-time, appears to be highly confident heading into tonight’s affair.

Anik even went as far as to compare “The Dominator” to featherweight champion and Irish superstar Conor McGregor in terms of confidence:

“I feel like the confidence with Dominick Cruz is on a Conor McGregor level, so far be it from me to pick against him.”

While the UFC commentator has put his money on Cruz, we could be in for a very close fight this evening in Boston.

Who are you picking?

Coach: Conor McGregor Could Challenge For Third UFC Title Within A Year

conor-mcgregor-ufc-194-5

It looks like Conor McGregor won’t be satisfied with just two UFC world titles if he manages to defeat Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC Lightweight Championship at UFC 197 in March.

According to “The Notorious” Irishman’s coach, John Kavanagh, McGregor could potentially move all the way up to 170 pounds to challenge Robbie Lawler — or whoever else is champion at the time — for the UFC Welterweight Championship.

Kavanagh told The42.ie the following:

“Conor has been cutting down to 145 pounds since he was 16. He’s now 27 so it will be nice to take a break from that weight-cut. We’ve done it plenty of times before and we’ll do it again. Funnily enough, the last weight-cut — for the Aldo fight — was probably the best one yet thanks to the help of George Lockhart, who’s on board again for this fight. He’s part of the team now. You’ve seen Conor on salads… now watch what he’s like on steak. And maybe the pursuit of belts won’t stop there either. I’ve said from the beginning that welterweight may not be out of the question. One of Conor’s main sparring partners, Gunnar Nelson, is a welterweight, so Conor is very used to that feel. I would not be at all surprised if we’re preparing to go for a third belt a year from now.”

Coach: Aldo Wasn’t Allowed To Fight For Lightweight Title Like McGregor

The Future of former long-time featherweight champion Jose Aldo is currently unclear at the moment.

Heading into his highly anticipated showdown with Irish star the “Notorious” Conor McGregor at December 12’s UFC 194, “Scarface” had been the only featherweight champion in promotional history, looking to make the eighth consecutive defense of his strap.

In emphatic fashion, Aldo fell from his throne in just 13 seconds due to a vicious McGregor left hand.

Obviously wanting a rematch, Aldo’s camp isn’t happy with the fact that the “Notorious” one will be jumping up a weight class to challenge 155-pound king Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of March 5’s UFC 197.

McGregor will look to become the first fighter in UFC history to simultaneously hold two titles. According to Aldo’s long-time head coach Andre Pederneiras, “Scarface” asked to do the same for nearly four years, but was never given the treatment that the UFC’s golden boy has received:

“Concerning Aldo, we are just waiting to see what the future holds right now since McGregor has been allowed to keep the 145 title while being able to fight or the 155 title,” Pederneiras told Sherdog. “That is something that hasn’t happened before. I spent four years asking the UFC the same thing, to allow Aldo to keep his featherweight belt while going up and contesting at lightweight but it was never allowed. Now we see Conor get the OK on his first request.”

Given the fact that the Irish knockout artist is one of the biggest stars in UFC history, the move makes sense from a business stand point, but it’s also understandable why Aldo’s camp may not be too happy.

With the current state of the 145-pound division, what should be next for “Scarface”?
