Strikeforce 135-pound women’s champion Sarah Kaufman will get her wish when she takes on Marloes Coenen on the main card of Strikeforce’s next big Showtime event on October 9 in San Jose, and she has no regrets about what she had to do to make it happen.

“I think it’s important for fighters to stand up for what they deserve,” Kaufman said on Friday afternoon’s Strikeforce media call, responding to questions about her post-fight remarks following a victory over Roxanne Modafferi on a Strikeforce Challengers card in July.

“You don’t want to make your organization look bad, but if your issue needs to be said, I’m happy I said what I said and I think my fight kind of backed that up,” Kaufman added. “Whether it was me talking or the fans reacting or the fight itself getting highlighted on ESPN, I think they all worked together in helping push the division and have a title [fight] on the main card.”

That title fight pits the undefeated Kaufman against a Dutch challenger who posted a loss in her last outing – a 145-pound title scrap against Strikeforce champ Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos – only don’t try telling Coenen that she doesn’t deserve back-to-back title shots in different divisions.

Don’t Like MMA’s Double Standards? Then Do Something About It

Sarah Kaufman thinks she’s being treated differently than every other Strikeforce champion. She’s right.

She thinks there’s a double standard that’s keeping her pay low and her fights on the lesser-watched Challengers series events. She’s right.

She thinks – if I may paraphrase her position – that this is some unfair, possibly sexist crap. Again, she’s right.

And yet, I can’t help feeling like we already knew this. Just like I can’t help feeling that we’re all at least partially to blame for it.

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Almost every underdog swears he’s going to shock the world. At the HP Pavilion on Saturday night, Fabricio Werdum actually did it.

The former jiu-jitsu world champion rebounded from early trouble against MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko in the Strikeforce main event to secure a first-round submission victory over the Russian who has dominated the heavyweight rankings, pulling off an improbable upset in front of a crowd of 12,698 shocked fans.

“This is the happiest day of my life,” said Werdum, who continued to call Emelianenko the greatest heavyweight in the world even after the win. “I waited for this fight my whole life.”

As Fedor Emelianenko gave his customarily muted, stoic remarks at Saturday night’s post-fight press conference — his attitude is almost exactly the same in defeat as in victory, it turns out — the party was already underway out in the hallway.

Fabricio Werdum and his team of exuberant Brazilians turned the backstage area of the HP Pavilion into their own private Carnival, and the sound of their cheering almost drowned out Emelianenko’s brief responses.

They danced. They sang. They even got Forrest “Ghost Dog” Whitaker in on the act. When they returned to their hotel, they did a Gracie-train into the bar. In other words, they had an awesome time. Just imagine how crazy you’d go if somehow you made Fedor tap out in 69 seconds. Then multiply it by five or six very vocal Brazilians.

The tally may be even at one win apiece for Scott Smith and Cung Le after Le’s second-round TKO victory at Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll be meeting for a third bout any time soon, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said.

Responding to questions about whether a rubber match was guaranteed, as Smith’s manager, Mike Roberts, seemed to think was the case when he spoke with Sherdog.com before the bout, Coker said it might be a consideration eventually, but it’s by no means assured.

“We’ve had that conversation,” Coker said. “These guys, it was an amazing fight. Both fights were amazing fights. I think if they fought every weekend it would be amazing fights every weekend, like the Gatti-Ward fight, just those epic battles. When I think of Scott and Cung that’s what I think of. But there hasn’t been anything decided. I didn’t make that commitment to Scott or to Mike, actually.
