Dan Hardy Describes Khamzat Chimaev vs. Nate Diaz As ‘Assassination Attempt’ From The UFC

UFC alum, Dan Hardy has heavily criticized the promotion for their booking of a scrutinized September main event between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diazclaiming the promotion are setting up an “assassination attempt” as the latter plans his exit from the UFC

Hardy, who is expected to return to combat sports in November in the form of a boxing match with fellow UFC alum and sport veteran, Diego Sanchez, claimed that the organization’s decision to book a fight between the unbeaten berserker, Chimaev, and veteran contender, Diaz as an almost criminal offence.

“It feels like we’re getting to the point where someone should start thinking about pressing charges,” Dan Hardy told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “It doesn’t feel like a fair fight. It feels like a very, very cruel thing to do to someone that is a legitimate legend. Because they’ve spoke out against the organization, they’re going to get executed live on TV. That’s kind of how it feels, and it makes me feel uncomfortable to think that’s the way it’s going to go down.”

Dan Hardy claims a “horrendous” battering is likely in store for Nate Diaz at UFC 279

As far as Hardy is concerned, a moral victory against Chimaev for Diaz, albeit against the odds, is surviving a brutal, one-sided beating – or a quickfire trashing.

“I hope, desperately hope, that Nate at least comes through it alright, but after watching what Khamzat did to Rhys McKee, and to John Philips – yes, of course, Nate’s got good Jiu-Jitsu, but there comes a point where Jiu-Jitsu is nullified by good wrestling,” Dan Hardy explained. “It happened in the early days of the UFC, and it would happen against Nate if it hits the floor. I think he gets nullified and I think he gets beaten up horrendously from the top position. I think it’s going to be uncomfortable to watch. And I think it’s going to leave the UFC in a very, very bad light.”

“I just hope Nate comes through it alright, because I think he’s got good opportunities outside the UFC,” Dan Hardy continued. “It’s just a shame that they’re (the UFC) going to do this assassination attempt on him before he leaves.”

Without a victory since August 2019, Diaz has found himself on the receiving end of recent, consecutive, rather one-sided beatings at the hands of welterweight contenders, Jorge Masvidal, and Leon Edwards.

As for Chimaev, the brusier has enjoyed a run of five consecutive victories since his UFC debut two years ago – rushing through the quartet of John Philips, Rhy McKee, Gerald Meerschaert, and Li Jingliang – to go with a UFC 273 win over Gilbert Burns.

Dan Hardy believes Dana White is in the wrong for his recent comments about Nate Diaz.

Hardy took aim at White, quoting that the things he has said recently about Diaz are unnecessary and disrespectful.

Diaz hasn’t fought for around a year now and has been dying to get a fight soon. Due to his inability to get a fight, Diaz has repeatedly asked the UFC to drop him from his contract, so he could explore other options in combat sports.

Diaz only has one more fight on his current contract with the UFC. He has called for bouts with Khamzat Chimaev, Dustin Poirier and many other fighters.

Dana White told Diaz that he should go fight Jake Paul after asking to be released, once again.

Dan Hardy didn’t take too kindly to the UFC president’s comments

“This is the whole reason why there’s a class action lawsuit against the UFC. People don’t have any freedom, they don’t have any control over their career. Think about this, every single fighter on the UFC roster and everybody that’s considering signing with the UFC, they need to really contemplate this, if Nate Diaz can be disrespected to the media by the promoter the way that he has been, they don’t care about anybody.” Hardy said in an interview with ‘Submission Radio’ (Transcribed by BJPenn.com)

“Like, when I woke up the other day and I saw the thing about him winning one fight in five years and maybe the best person to fight is Jake Paul, it’s just unnecessary disrespect. It’s one thing when you get fighters disrespect one another, because that’s kind of a part of the business, but when the promoter starts shitting on people like that, and someone like Nate Diaz, who’s a cult icon, like, it just looks bad.” Hardy continued.

Diaz will continue to stay under contract with the UFC until he fights one more time. Many believed that the UFC was saving his last fight for Conor McGregor, but that is yet to be confirmed.

Former UFC welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy is not a fan of Dana White’s “unnecessary disrespect” of Nate Diaz.

Recently, White reacted to Diaz yet again requesting his release from the UFC. In his answer, White pointed out that Diaz has won only one of his last several fights, suggesting perhaps it is time for Diaz to move on.

He even pointed out that a boxing fight between Diaz and YouTube star Jake Paul might even actually make sense for the longtime UFC star. Speaking to Submission Radio recently, Hardy noted he wasn’t a fan of White’s comments towards Diaz.

“The Outlaw” said that someone of Diaz’s caliber shouldn’t be treated with the “unnecessary disrespect” that he has been as of late.

“This is the whole reason why there’s a class action lawsuit against the UFC. People don’t have any freedom, they don’t have any control over their career. Think about this, every single fighter on the UFC roster and everybody that’s considering signing with the UFC, they need to really contemplate this, if Nate Diaz can be disrespected to the media by the promoter the way that he has been, they don’t care about anybody.

“That’s the sad reality of it. Like, if Nate wants his release, he should get his release. He’s had enough stitches, he’s made enough money for the organization. Let him go. And if that means him going and making a bunch of money or fighting Jake Paul, then so be it, even better. If the UFC have not got their hands in his pockets, I just… I don’t know.

“Like, when I woke up the other day and I saw the thing about him winning one fight in five years and maybe the best person to fight is Jake Paul, it’s just unnecessary disrespect. It’s one thing when you get fighters disrespect one another, because that’s kind of a part of the business, but when the promoter starts shitting on people like that, and someone like Nate Diaz, who’s a cult icon, like, it just looks bad.”

“I don’t think it’s good for anybody. And I think Nate deserves a lot of respect for who he is, and the character and the fun that he brings to the sport. I mean, I didn’t think for a second that he was gonna beat Masvidal, but that fight week was bouncing. It was great to be a there. It was a different thing.

“It always is when a Nate Diaz fight’s happening. He’s one of the superheroes of the sport, and he deserves respect and he also deserves a pocket full of cash. Same as most of these guys do.”

Diaz hasn’t competed since June of last year when he faced off against Leon Edwards at UFC 263. He dropped a unanimous decision to Edwards despite nearly finishing the fight in the closing moments.

Now, Diaz is on the final fight of his UFC contract, and is asking to get his last bout booked as soon as possible, or for the Las Vegas-based mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion to cut him loose so he can pursue other options.

Paulie Malignaggi Reveals Why He Declined An Offer To Box Dan Hardy

Paulie Malignaggi is wary of any offers that might pull him back into fighting, even if it’s a matchup with a former UFC fighter.

“Magic Man” revealed in an interview with Dylan Bowker that he recently turned down an offer to box former UFC welterweight Dan Hardy.

“I was offered recently an exhibition boxing bout against Dan Hardy in England. Former UFC fighter Dan Hardy,” Malignaggi said. “Which was kind of interesting, but at the end of the day, I just felt like it would take away from my schedule that I had with my commentary gigs. My commentary is sort of what I’m trying to stay focused on right now.”

The 41-year-old most recently competed in 2019 when he faced off with Artem Lobov in the main event of BKFC 6. Malignaggi lost via decision to Lobov in his only bare-knuckle boxing appearance, but he’s remained in the sport by moving into a commentary role with BYB Extreme Fighting Series.

Even though he turned down the opportunity to fight Hardy, “Magic Man” admits that he was tempted by the details of the matchup.

“They gave me a decent offer actually (for Hardy). Honestly, it was a cool scenario all around. It was less risk and would have been with 16-ounce gloves. It was definitely less risk. I come from a life where I had to pay people to spar in 16-ounce gloves…So to be able to be paid to do a 16-ounce glove sparring match would have been interesting. I was offered it with no headgear. Listen, I can’t say it didn’t get my attention. But what I figured to myself was if I take this, I’m going to keep getting other offers and I’m going to keep getting sucked back into this.”

Malignaggi has floated in and out of MMA headlines since his controversial sparring session with Conor McGregor in the lead up to McGregor’s fight with Floyd Mayweather. He blamed his 2019 BKFC loss to Lobov on “MMA judges” and criticized Ben Askren’s boxing performance against Jake Paul. Earlier this year, he threw his own name into the mix as a possible opponent for Paul.

Dan Hardy is set to appear in an exhibition boxing match on July 2 against Diego Sanchez. Malignaggi previously claimed to have been offered a fight with Sanchez for BKFC in 2021.

What do you think of Pauli Malignaggi’s explanation for why he turned down a fight with Dan Hardy?
