LAS VEGAS – Much is being made in the buildup to UFC 130 on Saturday about the friend vs. friend heavyweight bout between Frank Mir and Roy Nelson.

Make no mistake – the two Las Vegas natives and residents and frequent training partners are far from enemies. But as Nelson said Wednesday, let’s not take this whole “friends” thing too far.

“It would be different if we were really friends – best friends,” Nelson told MMA Fighting prior to the press conference for Saturday’s pay-per-view at the MGM Grand. “There’s a difference between business acquaintances and friends. I consider a friend any time we eat together at the same restaurant, or he’s eaten at my house or I’ve eaten at his house. We train together – jiu-jitsu. It’s like (a reporter) who interviews me – does that mean we’re friends too?”

Thirty minutes later on the press conference dais, the two seemed chummy enough. And they even mock-hugged before their pose-down photo op. But Mir said for this particular fight, it affects more than just the two of them in the cage – it’s the people in their inner circles.

“In this situation with Roy, it’s difficult because we have a lot of mutual friends,” Mir told MMA Fighting. “James Johnson is in his corner on Saturday night – the guy was one of my groomsmen in my wedding! So we have a lot of mutual relationships where I might not be his best friend, but we have mutual best friends that go back and forth.”

And that, Mir said, affected how he approached the fight – not wanting to make any comments about Nelson, even in jest, that their mutual friends would take the wrong way.

“I think I’ve kind of kept, on purpose, any kind of poking or badgering to a minimum, not because I didn’t want to fight him,” Mir said. “I know Roy gets it. I get it. It’s the close friends around us that I worry about that I’m going to have to see 20 years from now, people who are a godfather-of-my-kids-who-train-with-him type of scenario.”

Nelson (15-5, 2-1 UFC), the Season 10 heavyweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter,” beat Mir eight years ago in a grappling tournament that had slipped under most radars until it was dredged up from the archives after the fight was booked. But both have acknowledged they’re two completely different fighters than back then.

Mir, Nelson and UFC president Dana White joked Wednesday about the fight booking causing mini-battles over gym schedules and who would wear what color shorts on Saturday. But Mir (14-5, 12-5 UFC) said despite not having any lunch dates planned with Nelson, he’s still traversing new territory with this fight.

“This will be the closest I’ve ever been to any of my opponents,” Mir said. “I’m cordial with everybody – I try to be. But it’s a fight.”

Nelson said in this particular case, it all just comes down to one thing: Friendship may be friendship, but business is business.

“It’s just one of those things,” Nelson said. “You’d prefer to fight somebody that you really would rather derail their whole career. I have no ill will toward Frank. But it is what it is, and if the UFC wants you to fight whoever, then that’s what you do to get paid.”

What does the future hold for Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic?

Many Ultimate Fighting Championship fans are wondering what’s left for the popular Croatian fighter after his recent third-round KO loss to Brendan Schaub at UFC 128 back in March.

The former PRIDE Fighting Championships standout has now lost back-to-back fights with back-to-back KO’s. In the days following the loss to Schaub, UFC President Dana White openly stated that he thought the loss signaled the end of Cro Cop’s fighting career.

However, White has recently confirmed that Mirko Cro Cop will fight at least one more time.

Courtesy of MMA Fighting, White revealed that Cro Cop would fight again and had this to say in regards to Cro Cop’s future: “Do I think he should have retired? Yeah. But I don’t think he’s in one of these situations like Chuck Liddell, who needed to retire right then. He’s a man, a grown man, and if he wants to continue to fight, that’s his right. And he still has a fight with me.”

Mirko Filipovic is best known as the winner of PRIDE’s 2006 Open-Weight Grand Prix, beating Wanderlei Silva and Josh Barnett on the same day and finishing both opponents.

In total, Cro Cop fought over twenty times in PRIDE and was one of its biggest stars.

Since debuting in the UFC at UFC 67 in 2007, Mirko Cro Cop has compiled a record of 6-5 with one No Contest. Inside the UFC, Cro Cop’s record stands at 4-5.

All four of those wins were stoppages, although four of his five losses were also stoppages.

Cro Cop’s recent two-fight losing-streak is only the second time in his career that he’s lost back-to-back fights, and the first time he has ever lost by back-to-back KO.

Chuck Liddell Video: To Fornicate or Defecate, That Is the Key Question

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell was walking down the street when he was asked a fairly odd question opening interview question by the folks at TMZ.com, “Is it true that fighters, like, don’t fornicate before a fight?”

The question itself is nothing new and Chuck handles it well, answering, “Depends on the fighter, I guess.” Liddell then added that his “Trainer told him to limit it to once the night before.”

Pretty tame stuff all in all, but the comedy quotient gets kicked up a notch when the TMZ reporter gets back to the office and reviews his “great question” with the website’s staff.  It seems as if the young man that had the conversation with Liddell may have missed some sex education and health classes back in junior high school as he confuses fornication with defecation.

While, this stuff is not exactly, comedy gold, it is fairly amusing to see the staff crack up around the reporter while he claims that he and Chuck were on the same wave length during the very brief interview.

UFC president Dana White is never shy of sharing his opinion and, because of that, it has brought him a fair share of criticism and appeal.

White spoke with MMAHeavy.com this week on various topics revolving around mixed martial arts, including the recent suspension of UFC middleweight, Chael Sonnen.

The outspoken boss said he felt the whole situation regarding Sonnen was dealt poorly.

“You’ve heard me say it for almost 11 years, we always support what the athletic commission says, but this kid got it stuck to him,” White said.

“He’s paid his dues in every way, shape and form, and I think he’s been treated a bit unfairly.”

Sonnen’s career and personal life have been in a whirlwind since his loss to UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva, last year at UFC 117. Sonnen tested positive for high levels of testosterone found in his system and he was charged with money laundering from a local real estate agency in his hometown of Oregon.

While appearing in front of the California State Athletic Commission last week, Sonnen was hoping that his fighting career would resume and he could get retain his license. Sonnen took to his Twitter account to stir up attention, as he announced that he would retire if his license wasn’t renewed.

White clarified Sonnen’s comment and said that retirement was not necessarily the case, but rather he missed his opportunity to compete for a title shot, again.

“This kid had the opportunity to coach The Ultimate Fighter, he had the opportunity to get a big fight set up. Should he win that fight, everybody knows what happened with Anderson Silva,” he said.

“This was a key moment in this kid’s career.”

Heavy.com also reports that Sonnen is eligible to reapply for his license on June 29, just when his current license expires. However, he must appear before the CSAC and apply, but if he is denied, he will have to sit out another year, thus all but guaranteeing a middleweight title shot.
