The UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones was proudly showing off his weight training on Instagram when former champion Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson mocked him stating that he’s seen MMA icon Chuck Liddell lift heavier.

Bones‘ Jon Jones is an all-time great in MMA with his legendary run in the light heavyweight division. Since becoming champion in 2011, Jones has defeated notable fighters such as Rashad Evans, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Daniel Cormier, Vitor Belfort, Lyoto Machida, and Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, among many others. Eventually, he vacated his light heavyweight throne, and ‘Bones’ moved up to heavyweight where he earned UFC gold.

Now on social media, Jon Jones often shows off his new heavyweight physique. He said:

“240 pounds, fast and strong. I used to walk around at 235lbs as a light heavyweight. This almost feels like a light heavyweight fight without the weight cut.”

Former UFC champion Quinton ‘Rampage‘ Jackson remarked:

“I’ve seen Chuck lift more”

Chuck Liddell recently said, in an interview with Jackson, that in his prime he would have been able to defeat the all-time great Jon Jones. ‘The Iceman’ was a key figure in helping transition the sport from underground to mainstream. The knockout striker was celebrated for his notable wins over Randy Couture and Tito Ortiz. On facing Jon Jones, Liddell said:

“That’s why I always said I would’ve been a bad matchup for [Jones] cause I’m probably one of the few guys where he would have a hard time dictating where I fought him. You know, I would’ve fought him. He would’ve had to fight me standing up, he couldn’t outwrestle me. He couldn’t take me down…He wouldn’t have been able to take me down. He would’ve had to strike with me.”

Lists are always going to create discussion in regards to which options should or shouldn’t have made it onto the final version. This is no different with ESPN’s Top 10 men’s MMA fighters of the 21st century list.

Unsurprisingly, the current UFC heavyweight champion and consensus greatest of all time, Jon Jones, takes the top spot with the usual cast following behind him. Welterweight great Georges St-Pierre is the runner-up with the long-time champion of the weight class above him, Anderson Silva, rounding out the top three.

Dominant champions Demetrious Johnson and Khabib Nurmagomedov make up the top five whilst Fedor Emelianenko, Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, BJ Penn and Kamaru Usman complete the full list.

On a recent episode of the Jaxxon Podcast, two men who are in a great position to debate the list did just that as Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Liddell spoke about who could have earned a spot that ultimately didn’t.

Jackson, perhaps controversially, said that he isn’t sure whether the number five pick had enough fights at the highest level to be considered, especially when someone like Matt Hughes didn’t make the cut.

“Nothing against Khabib, I just don’t think he fought enough fights. To be on there and to not have Matt Hughes on there, you know what I’m saying cus he was champion for a long time.”

Liddell, who did make the cut, responded by agreeing with his former opponent’s take that Hughes deserves a mention. He also named one other great champion that would have undoubtedly been in contention, even if some of his best work was done before he arrived in the UFC.

“If you look at the strength of opponents, you know. There’s some other guys in there, José Aldo. A beast man, for years. Those lists are lists man and all those guys are quality guys. It’s tough really.”

Chuck Liddell Talks Dream Showdown Beating Jon Jones: ‘He couldn’t take me down’

Chuck Liddell vs Jon Jones

Former UFC light heavyweight champion ‘The Iceman’ Chuck Liddell would have loved to have a matchup against the all-time great ‘Bones’ Jon Jones in the octagon.

Chuck Liddell vs. Jon Jones

The US-born Chuck Liddell was a striker in the UFC who was feared for his impressive punching power. Throughout his MMA career, he was able to capture the light heavyweight world championship and defend it in four bouts. He is a UFC Hall of Fame athlete due to his influence in coaching The Ultimate Fighter season 1 putting MMA into the mainstream. Additionally, he had blockbuster matchups against Tito Ortiz, Randy Couture, and Quinton ‘Rampage‘ Jackson.

All-time great Jon ‘Bones’ Jones was able to capture the light heavyweight crown in 2011 and rack up a highly impressive 11 defenses of this title. Along the way, he defeated notable athletes such as Rashad Evans, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Daniel Cormier, Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Lyoto Machida, and Glover Teixeira, among others.

Jon Jones

The Iceman‘ said that one of his biggest career regrets is not getting the matchup booked against Jon Jones. There was some overlap with Jones making his UFC debut in 2008 and Liddell fought in the UFC until 2010. However, ‘The Iceman’ was aging out by this point having earned a 0-3 in the UFC post 2008.

Chuck Liddell

Regardless, Chuck Liddell still wanted the showdown and believed he would have given ‘Bones’ some problems. Speaking on the JAXXON PODCAST, Liddell explained:

“That’s why I always said I would’ve been a bad matchup for [Jones] cause I’m probably one of the few guys where he would have a hard time dictating where I fought him. You know, I would’ve fought him. He would’ve had to fight me standing up, he couldn’t outwrestle me. He couldn’t take me down…He wouldn’t have been able to take me down. He would’ve had to strike with me.”

Conor McGregor Reveals His Top 5 GOATS of MMA

Conor McGregor recently unveiled the five fighters he considers to be the greatest of all time. Shockingly, he wasn’t one of them.

‘Mystic Mac’ was recently featured on a live stream hosted by online gambling site Duelbits where he was asked a series of questions, one of them being who he considers as the five GOATS of mixed martial arts. With the snap of a finger, McGregor rattled off four notable names, though he needed a moment or two to come up with a fifth pick.

“Top-5 MMA GOATS,” McGregor said. “Rickson Gracie, Royce Gracie, Ken Shamrock, Chuck Liddell… how many is that? Three, four? Four? The OGs… Bas Rutten. Bas Rutten, yeah. Europe’s own. Europe’s first is Bas Rutten. What a man Bas Rutten is.

“Serious shape he’s in now. Bas, I’m right behind you, bro. I see you, Bas. I see you, Bas. I’m right behind you” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Inspired to train in martial arts after seeing the Bruce Lee classic Enter the Dragon, Bas Rutten established himself as a world-class kickboxer before becoming the first UFC champion from the Netherlands following a split decision win against Kevin Randleman at UFC 20 in May 1999 to claim a heavyweight title.

Rutten never defended the title due to injuries, but went on to cap off his iconic fighting career with an impressive 28-4-1 record with noteworthy wins over Frank Shamrock, Maurice Smith, Guy Mezger, and Tsuyoshi Kohsaka.

Rutten was inducted into the UFC Hall Fame Pioneer Wing in 2015.

Breaking down Conor McGregor’s GOAT List

The other four names on McGregor’s list were all prominent figures in mixed martial arts who, in one way or another, helped to bring MMA out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

Perhaps the most famous of which was Royce Gracie. Winning the inaugural UFC tournament in 1993, Gracie quickly became the de facto face of the promotion’s early days. Then there was his half-brother, Rickson Gracie, whose accomplishments have been touted as something straight out of mythology.

Conor McGregor

Ken Shamrock helped bring the UFC to another level during the promotion’s developmental years and Chuck Liddell is often credited as being MMA’s first true superstar, capturing the hearts of fight fans with his high-octane style of fighting before crossing over into the world of film and television.

Conor McGregor

With McGregor himself accounting for eight of the 10 highest-grossing pay-per-views in UFC history and becoming the first-ever simultaneous two-division champion in the promotion’s history, it’s a little surprising he didn’t include himself.

Do you agree with McGregor’s list?

Brock Lesnar or Chuck Liddell: Alistair Overeem

The Dutch-born Alistair Overeem fought Brock Lesnar in the UFC and Chuck Liddel in PRIDE FC. ‘The Demolition Man’ has had a storied career all around the globe. Recently, with Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson, Overeem named who was tougher between Brock Lesnar and ‘The Iceman’ Lidell.

Brock Lesnar or Chuck Liddell

Brock Lesnar was a former WWE competitor and a standout in NCAA collegiate wrestling. The heavyweight athlete transitioned to MMA and was able to capture the UFC heavyweight title by defeating Randy Couture. Lesnar and Overeem fought at heavyweight with the Dutch athlete taking a TKO win.

‘The Iceman’ Chuck Liddell is one of the fighters who helped establish the UFC as a mainstream sport in the USA. The mohawked fighter stood out for his knockout style. The former UFC light heavyweight champion was entered into the PRIDE FC tournament in Japan. The US-born Liddell had a back-and-forth war against Overeem before knocking him out. Liddell would go on to lose to ‘Rampage’ Jackson in this Grand Prix.

Alistair Overeem

The Dutch athlete Alistair Overeem has fought across the world in multiple organizations. He was able to capture titles in DREAM, Strikeforce, and K-1. Additionally, he competed in GLORY, PRIDE FC, and the UFC, among others. Throughout his storied career, he has faced legendary figures such as Badr Hari, Francis Ngannou, Stipe Miocic, Junior dos Santos, Mirko Cro Cop, ‘Shogun’ Rua, Peter Aerts, Vitor Belfort, Igor Vovchanchyn, plus, of course, Chuck Liddell and Brock Lesnar.

On comparing Lesnar and Liddell, Overeem explained:

“Chuck in PRIDE. When I was young, I was 23 when I fought him, I didn’t know anything. Training was not good, no strength from the conditioning. My coaches back then … Lucien [Carbin] was kind of a traditional coach and his stuff didn’t work. I mean, the knees worked, but other than that. I didn’t see any low kick, high kicks. All that stuff didn’t work.”

The Dutch-Surinamese Lucien Carbin was one of the first students at the Mejiro Gym, in the Netherlands, founded by Jan Plas. This was one of the gyms responsible for transitioning Kyokushin karate to Dutch style Kickboxing.

UFC CEO Dana White rescheduled the birth of his son for a Chuck Liddell fight: 'I said that ain't gonna work'

You could never accuse Dana White of not being a dedicated businessman.

In 2001, White became the president of the UFC after his childhood friends, Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta, purchased the company for $2 million. In the 23 years since White has helped the Las Vegas-based promotion grow to previously unimaginable heights. Today, the Ultimate Fighting Championship is estimated to be worth a whopping $12.3 billion with White himself carrying an estimated net worth of over half a billion dollars.

Dana White and the Fertitta Brothers

But to get there, White had to work his ass off and make a lot of sacrifices — even if that meant putting off the birth of his son.

During a recent appearance on the Pound 4 Pound podcast with former UFC champions Kamaru Usman and Henry Cejudo, Dana White revealed that the birth of his son Aidan conflicted with a fight card headlined by UFC Hall of Famer and one of the sport’s biggest icons, Chuck Liddell.

Chuck Liddell

For most people, seeing their child being brought into the world would take precedence over work. But not for Dana White.

“My son Aidan, his due date was Chuck Liddell versus somebody,” White said. “I moved the date of his birth for the Chuck Liddell fight. I said, ‘Yeah, that ain’t gonna work. We got a big f*cking fight coming up,’ so my wife had a C-section.”

“Talk about a businessman!” Usman said in response to White’s admission.
