Undefeated Irish Boxing Star Callum Walsh Scores Epic KO to Retain WBC Title in Dublin

Undefeated Irish boxing sensation Callum Walsh added another highlight-reel knockout to his resume on Friday night, successfully defending his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title in the process.

Airing live on UFC Fight Pass and emanating from 3Arena in Dublin, it was Walsh’s first time headlining an event in his home country and the 23-year-old rising star definitely did not disappoint. Taking on seasoned veteran Przemyslaw Runowski, Walsh established his dominance from the get-go with a slew of power shots that had the Polish standout reeling early.

It was just a matter of time before ‘King’ landed the fight-ending blow.

That moment came with just over a minute left in the second round when Walsh uncorked a counter left hand that connected clean and sent Runowski crashing to the canvas.

With the win, Walsh kept his ‘O’ intact and moved to a perfect 12-0 with all but two of his wins coming by KO/TKO.

“Oh baby, this is unbelievable,” Walsh yelled as the sold-out crowd of 8,000 roared in the background. “What a night. The crowd is electric. What did they say? He’d never been stopped? Until he got hit by me.”

Callum Walsh Bringing a ‘UFC Mindset’ to the boxing game

Walsh has become a favorite of UFC CEO Dana White who has been in attendance for many of the Irishman’s fights, including Friday’s clash in the Emerald Isle. White also awarded Walsh a $5,000 bonus for his knockout of Runowski.

I don’t pick and choose opponents. That’s why Dana is pushing me because he knows I’m bringing this UFC mindset,” Walsh told Aaron Bronster while discussing his relationship with White.

“I want to make these big fights happen and obviously, with Dana White helping and with a promoter like Tom Loeffler, I think we are going to change boxing a lot. I’m going to make these big fights happen” (h/t Essentially Sports).

Dana White Teases ‘Big Announcements’ About the Future of Boxing

Dana White is finally ready to leap into the world of boxing.

Over the last two decades, White has established himself as one of the best combat sports promoters on the planet, helping to turn the Ultimate Fighting Championship into the global juggernaut it is today and somehow getting the Nevada State Athletic Commission to license Power Slap.

Now, the UFC CEO will bring his business savvy to the sweet science.

Details are still limited, but White confirmed plans are in motion during a Q&A session ahead of Friday’s WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight Title between undefeated defending champion Callum Walsh and Poland’s Przemyslaw Runowski.

“There will be some big announcements soon. I never say anything I don’t do, ever,” Dana White said Thursday during the Walsh vs. Runowski Q&A. “We’ve been kicking the whole boxing thing around for a long time, but you’ve never heard me commit and say, ‘I’m in.’ I’m in.”

Dana White Continues his support of boxing prospect Callum Walsh

White has taken a strong interest in the up-and-coming boxing prospect who will be competing in his home country of Ireland this Friday against a tough and far more experienced opponent.

White has routinely appeared at Walsh’s fights in Boston and Los Angeles, among other locations, and this weekend’s event at 3Arena will be no different.

“I love Callum Walsh,” White said in an interview with The Ring. ”I love his style. I love the fact that this kid was fighting really tough guys already at six fights [into his career]. He’s willing to take tough fights, and I just liked the kid personally as soon as I was introduced to him. Promoting him is fun for me, and I am having fun doing it.”

Dana White clueless on return opponent for Conor McGregor: 'He's in New York and he's training'

Amid the booking of a rematch clash between Charles Oliveira and Michael Chandler for later this year, Conor McGregor’s return to the Octagon is up in even more smoke according to UFC boss, Dana White, who claimed an opponent for the Dubliner would not be selected until his return was loctite.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight champion and featherweight gold holder, has been out of action since he headlined UFC 264 over three years ago in a trilogy rubber match against former interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

Ben Askren rips 'Addict' Conor McGregor amid UFC layoff: 'This guy is clearly out partying'

Fracturing his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss, Conor McGregor was scheduled to headline UFC 303 back in June in a welterweight matchup against the above-mentioned Chandler, until a fractured toe ruled the striker from a hiatus-snapping return on just week’s notice.

And in the time since, the Missouri native has now given up on a grudge fight with Conor McGregor — albeit for the time being, booking a five round rematch fight with former undisputed titleholder, Oliveira in the co-main event of UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden.

Dana White provides update on Conor McGregor’s return

Appearing overnight in Dublin at a press event, UFC boss, White provided an update on the future of McGregor once more — claiming that while the ex-two-weight champion is currently training, a potential return opponent has yet to be selected.

“It’s going to [be] determined when Conor (McGregor) comes back, who the opponent is,” Dana White told assembled media. “Whenever Conor is ready and he comes back. He hit me up last night when he heard that I was here. He’s in New York right now, and he is training.”

Without a win since 2020, McGregor’s most recent outing came in the form of a first round high-kick and strikes TKO win over former title challenger and Hall of Fame inductee, Donald Cerrone in his most recent venture to the welterweight limit.

Stephen Glover, better known as Steve-O, recently made a stunning revelation, claiming that Dana White once ditched a UFC main event to watch Jake Paul’s boxing match instead.

It’s well-known that for several years, Paul and White have been locked in a heated war of words, frequently clashing with starkly opposing views on a range of issues. It’s primarily “The Problem Child” who has, time and again, slammed the UFC CEO for underpaying his fighters and failing to provide adequate medical coverage.

On the other hand, White’s frustration with Paul became public when the YouTuber-turned-boxer began taking on retired UFC fighters like Ben Askren and Tyron Woodley in the squared circle. The UFC head honcho has fiercely dismissed the 27-year-old Ohio native’s criticism of fighter pay. White has also voiced his opinion that Paul only fights opponents well past their prime.

Although White isn’t fond of Paul’s crossover boxing exploits, according to Steve-O, the 55-year-old businessman once tuned in to watch “The Problem Child” take on one of the most prominent ex-UFC superstars.

Steve-O Claims White Skipped UFC Nashville Main Event to Watch Paul vs. Diaz

During a recent appearance on BS w/ Jake Paul, Steve-O, a close friend of White, revealed an interesting moment from UFC Fight Night Nashville in August 2023. While Cory Sandhagen battled Rob Font in the main event, White apparently found the fight dull and slipped backstage to his room.

Instead of watching the UFC headliner, he tuned in to catch Paul’s cruiserweight showdown against Nate Diaz, which was happening simultaneously at the American Airlines Center in Texas.

“I can tell you that when you boxed Nate Diaz that night, there was a UFC Fight Night in Nashville, Tennessee,” Steve-O said. “I had arranged to fly to Nashville because I was very interested in looking at properties… You know, that’s why I was in Nashville for this fight night. It was Cory Sandhagen versus Rob Font, and the main event was dreadfully boring. Dana dipped out of the arena, and after the fight, I was walking out, and we were like, ‘Oh, what’s up with Dana?’ We go into his room, and he’s just turned on you fighting Nate Diaz, and I watched you fight Nate Diaz with Dana.”

In an interview with boxing icon Mike Tyson last year, White dispelled the widespread belief that he harbors hatred for “The Problem Child”. In fact, White clarified that he doesn’t dislike him at all.

Instead, he’s friends with Jake’s sibling, Logan Paul, whose beverage Prime became the official hydration partner of the UFC in February 2023.
